RPI for 2008

The RPI monster is off and running again. I've just run the program for 2008 games played through September 1. So far as I can figure out, PilotNation doesn't have the capacity to handle attachments, but BigSoccer does. So, for those interested in seeing the RPI after these few games, use the following link and go to my post as of approximately 11:44 am today: http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=15622235#post15622235. A 9/1/2008 RPI report is attached to that post as a pdf file. ...

West Coast Conference Preseason Basketball Press conference

Midnight Madness?

I know we've never really done a Midnight Madness here, but here's an idea for something that sounds do-able:

http://members4.boardhost.com/donscentral/msg/1223964697.html

That's what USF is doing for their midnight madness. Seems like maybe we could do the same thing... after a soccer game, have kids walk over to the Chiles Center for some free food (maybe even a beer garden for 21+ kids?), a dunk contest, a three-point shooting contest between the guys and girls, etc. etc.

PurplePride13... ...

Who is drawing the most MLS buzz from this years' team? Is Irwins' son, Frankie Lopez, or anyone else grabbing the attention of the league?

By the way, did anyone catch Conor Casey's recent hat trick for Colorado?
I walked into a Barnes and Noble today and saw this on a table of new books:

East End Heroes, Stateside Kings, by Brian Belton

I thought, "that looks like Clive on the cover." I picked it up and looked at the synopsis: "Oh my gosh, it IS Clive!" (He's the one on the left.)

Clive, along with two West Ham teammates, made history by being part of the first lineup in an English league to feature three black players. There is an entire chapter about Clive's time ...

Just got home after 700 mile round trip.

Beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest. Clear blue skies. Sunny and relatively warm in Spokane. Magnificent sunset in our eyes driving home.

Gonzaga has new soccer field that looks great. Rest of the stadium is a work in progress. Temporary bleachers. High class porta-potties.

Small section of Pilot fans including a passel of Janelle Jacka's family who had driven over from Seattle.
Santa Clara on the bubble

Santa Clara has put itself in the position where it needs to win the rest of its games or lose a chance at an at large bid.

They lost today to San Diego 2:1. SCU is now 3-9-2, so any tie or loss puts them below .500 for the season. In order to be considered for an at large bid, you must have a record of .500 or better.

Their only other hope is to win the conference for the automatic bid, but with another tie or loss, that's not likely, either

Nice job by Piots to win their first conf game on the road, while picking up their 10th straight win and 9th shutout in 12 matches.

Six matches to go in regular season, 3 at home and 3 away. Goal: To win out. If we can do that, we should control our own destiny and give ourselves a great shot at making the College Cup Final Four.

Nice to see Garrett sitting the Amigas and not playing them until Sophie scored the third goal, putting the game pretty much out of reach. It's very informative about what Garrett has been thinking recently and what he is planning for the start of WCC play tomorrow, Sunday 10/12, against Gonzaga in Spokane.

Very interesting was one point he made very strongly - Korie Nicholson is going to start playing big time minutes. Kramer, Robin, and Jared have all put on some weight, and Hegarty and Jasonn have really slimmed down. Very cool to see that they put the work in this summer.

Garrett has said, and I forget his exact words, that he can no longer rely on the 3 amigas, and that he must start relying on the players who will consitute his playoff unit. I don't see how he can do that without sitting the amigas.

We wouldn't be 10-1, I don't believe, without them. If they can help us gain a #1 seed, they will have left an indelible mark on the season in helping us gain home field throughout the first four games of the playoffs.

But our playoff unit has to take ...

Phase 2, the conference season, begins for the Pilots this upcoming Sunday, Oct. 12th, at Gonzaga. (7 conference matches remain to complete the regular season schedule: 3 at home, 4 away.) Phase 3, the NCAA tournament, must now be earned. (I don't think 0-7 would get us an invite!)

The goal: Win out.
Wow... Chad Ford mentions eight players in a regular men's basketball article about the upcoming NBA draft, and two of them are WCC players. Amazing:

Who's Hot

Patrick Mills, PG, St. Mary's

Mills played for the Australian national team in the Olympics and gave Team USA fits with his quickness. Chris Paul and Deron Williams both had a difficult time guarding him. Mills ended up leading Australia with 20 points in its quarterfinal loss to Team USA. His performance was enough for scouts ...

So my youngest brother bucked the family trend and went to Seattle U so my parents get the school magazine, and the most recent one is a feature story on SU making the switch to D-1... Apparently they will be eligible this year for women's soccer as an at large team. Interesting since they generally do field a pretty solid team and I think are a few years removed from a D-II title... More interestingly is that since their on campus gym is extremely sub-standard for basketball they will be starting ...

Well, he was fired as the VP of the Clippers yesterday (he'd been there for 25 years or so)... he didn't have a lot of success in the front office there, but whatever... how can anyone in LA have success with the Clippers?
Wow wow wow... the UP men ran extremely, extremely well at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene today, finishing second overall but with David Kinsella and Alfred Kipchumba finishing 1-2 and with Tommy Betterbed finishing 6th. Oregon's depth gave them the team win by seven points (and, in fairness, Galen Rupp and Kenny Klotz didn't run), but still... (no - she played in two matches earlier in the season.)

Thanks, Buzz!

(No prob, Woody.)

Nice Article About Fr. Dorwart

You should check this out:

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/10/up_chaplain_returns_to_serve_i.html

It's very well-written and is quite long... Fr. Bill is the campus ministry director and also worked at the health center as a counselor too, but now he's leaving for his second tour of duty as a Navy chaplain. He's a wonderful man and will be missed for sure, but I'm sure he'll be doing some great work with the Navy.

Definitely give it a read if you've got some time.

Mic out again....

Didn't we all talk about this a few weeks ago?

Fridays 4:30 game: Great male singer sings the National Anthem and the mic pops in and out again. I wonder what it will take to have this figured out? Do we need to start a donation basket at the games to get a better mic system? It's Sad to see great student singers all rehearsed for a great song and the mic fails. At this juncture in time, a bullhorn would be more reliable.

Huskies up next

OK folks. next week shapes up as he battle for the Northwest.

The Huskies beat Hawai'i 2-1 in overtime. This gives them the same 9-1 record the Pilots have. Several of us have watched UW several times this year. Is there anyone who thinks they can pull off a win against UP?

Santa Clara game

It's the 78th minute and the brave souls at Merlo are witnessing a 4-1 thrashing of Santa Clara. Two for Brian Irwin, one each for Knapp and Frankie.

Now I kind of wish I'd gone tonight.

Women XC Sixth at Bill Dellinger

The women finished sixth at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Saturday. Results can be seen here:

http://www.goducks.com/pdf5/144899.pdf?ATCLID=1596612&SPID=238&DB_OEM_ID=500&SPSID=4337

Sifrash Ademe finished 13th and Dana Morgan 23rd overall. Smarter people than me will have to say whether or not this was a strong result for the team or not. They did finish ahead of No. 17 Colorado State, but behind unranked Wake Forest. Overall though, it seems as though it's a good performance ...
