Lopez wins the Lowe's Award

I heard from a reliable source that Stephanie is heading down to College Station this weekend to be awarded the Lowe's Senior Soccer award or whatever it is called. Can anyone confirm?

Yes, it is true she won the award. Not sure if she is going down there to collect the award, or if it's even being given out there. She is getting married in a few weeks' time and she has finals to take, so I would not be surprised if she did not make the trip.

Really? Steph won? Are we talking about the same award? Last time I looked...before voting closed...Steph and Angie were at 5%. Jessica Maxwell of UNC was way ahead at 30%! I was sure they were out the running!

BUT...my BAD for not believing either of the Pilots...Steph or Angie....could pull it out and win the whole darn thing! I should've known better!!

Phantom - I think the on-line voting was only one of the criterea and not the sole determinant of who won the award.

When you look at Stephanie's whole package... multiple-time All-American both athletically and academically, starting for the National Team, 3.7 or so GPA, community service, etc. etc... it really is a no-brainer that she won. (Well, assuming that this rumor is true.) She's pretty much the definition of the type of student athlete this award is meant for.

Yes, congrats, Steph, on winning such an impressive award. I'm quite sure that there were many other well-deserving candidates, (including Wozzie).

I can't think of a better soccer player/student/classy person than you. I look forward to the day I see your name up on the Pilots Athletic Hall of Fame!

The fan vote is only a portion of the Lowe's voting. There is also a vote by coaches and the media. Obviously those two factions were not quite as biased as the fans. Congratulations to Stephanie.

It turns out Stephanie picked up her award just minutes ago at halftime of the Notre Dame/FSU match. Garrett went with her, and I'm told neither made any comment. She was just presented the award and they left the field.

i would have to believe her status w/the national team, turning down $25,000 to return to college, and her role in her family as foster parents probably also played a big part in the voting. how can anyhone not like or be impressed by the humble young woman? she is simply a joy and we as pilot nation are very fortunate to have her linked to our program forever.

It's a busy fall for Steph - World Cup, NCAA tournament, Lowe's award, getting married..

There couldn't be a better person to have this all happen to at once.

She'll probably be back in training for the Olympics right after the honeymoon.

The Portlandpilots.com site had the teaser up earlier, but withheld the story until after the presentation.

i too just visited the pilots website and saw the post. what i noticed is that the lowe's award stands for 'celebrating loyalty an acheivement for staying in school', CLASS. this just confirms my belief that stephanie's decision to return to u of p an turn down the money is one of the many reasons she was selected. CLASS in more then one way.
