YouTube video of Port v UCLA goals

Post by KFTC on Sat Dec 01, 2007 12:12 am

Here's the link for the goals scored in the match against UCLA. Thought sticking it in its' own thread might make it easier for people to find. Enjoy! ... or, um, don't.

Perfect job, KFTC.

Any way you can change the outcome?

One other thing- there was a UCLA hand ball in the box on the cross just before Wozzies goal- not that it mattered.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's a good thing we scored from that corner, otherwise I think this forum would've been much more active this evening discussing a missed penalty call.

I wish the outcome were different. I was thinking tonight, as I was driving home, we lost 10 years ago in 1997 to UCLA in the first round of the playoffs 1-0, also on a header goal. Bonus geek points for knowing who was at the helm of that UCLA team...

Joy Fawcett coached that team. Didn't she step down not long after that?

The header was Stephanie Rigamat

The coach was Todd Saldana.

They both disappeared from the face of the earth--possibly alien abduction.

Also an easy one for those in the soccer world. Todd Saldana, Fawcett's assistant, succeeded her for 1 year before becoming the men's coach. Ellis took over after him.

I figured that since he was women's coach for only 1 year, it would slip by..

That's REALLY impressive Geezer, considering she wasn't one of the "marquee" players of that team.

Thanks to Google, Saldana wasn't exactly abducted by aliens. He was fired from the UCLA men's job, not for losing, but for graduating from a college that was deemed by the NCAA and therefore UCLA as a "diploma mill" years after he had earned his degree. UCLA's AD even acknowledge there was no intent on Saldana's part to mislead the university with his educational background as he and they believed he graduated from an accredited university (Columbia State). UCLA reasoned his firing by saying they expect all their head coaches to have graduated from accredited, 4-year institutions. Crazy, eh? He's now the Director of Coaching for South Bay Soccer Club in SoCal. Thanks, Google!

There is some pain you never forget...

I wondered what happened to Saldana.

I once had a professor of Biology who had no degree. another well known University hired him away from the place I went to knowing he had no degree and gave him an honorary so he could teach. More than one way to solve the problem. One of the schools in the elite 8, actually.

Great teacher-- of course, that was when we wrote on sheepskins--in ox blood.

Saldana

Post by Purplegeezer on Sat Dec 01, 2007 2:16 am

KFTC,

When you said Saldana was Fawcet's assistant, it started bugging me. I remembered he went to UCLA from LMU. turns out, that's the case.
He may have been an assistant, but not when he was hired as UCLA coach.

He was LMU's men's coach in 1997.
