Re: UP BUYS LAND TO EXPAND
The term gets thrown around way too much, but this is indeed a defining moment for the University.
Future growth is now much more secure, and we wont have to battle the neighborhood every time we build something...
And talk about a win for all parties: The U, the previous owner, the Neighborhood, the City, State & Federal governments, the public...! Wow, not very often this happens.
This will touch all facets of the U, too... with new room for athletics, classrooms/labs, green space, dorms...
A nice Christmas present to all of us!

The bio and chem majors could do some interesting experiments with the contaminated land. Really, they could.

Oh absolutely. I think one of the ideas is to build a special lab building down there that could help make UP a magnet school for environmental science.

Here's the EPA's release on the Triangle property.
EPA
They expect a cleanup to start pretty soon, apparently, using the Triangle LLC. money put in a trust fund.

Yeah, I got this release in my e-mail this week too. So, this plot of land wasn't part of the Masterplan, was it? All the same, it's very cool...probably a nice hill for downhill skiing if a winter storm comes through. LOL.

Re: UP BUYS LAND TO EXPAND
The Beacon has some articles about the preliminary plans for the Triangle property, and discusses an impending purchase for the adjoining 45 acre McCormick and Baxter property that is under negotiation. There are related stories, too.
The Beacon
I got a hard copy of the Beacon, which includes a preliminary map of future plans, so I have included a scan of it for your perusal.
It looks like many of the things we have talked about are there, and some added ones, too.
It looks like the plan needs a little work. I don't think the fisheries people will be happy with salmon getting bonked on the head by home runs. :P
Funny, I don't see the thousand-Poster clubhouse there....
Have a look.

Re: UP BUYS LAND TO EXPAND
Thanks, Geez! But I don't see the tram! And how about a boat dock, so we can tailgate on the water like they do at UDub! And I wouldn't mind having a place to set up my fishing rod to catch some of those returning salmon. I'll barbecue one for the thousand-posters crew.

The Beacon's future plans include two softball fields. Can anyone explain, if no softball team is planned . . .hmmn? I suspose softball is a popular sport among the undergraduates, but two for intramural sports . . .hmmn again?

Re: UP BUYS LAND TO EXPAND
I see a proposed salmon habitat. Maybe its back to salmon again on fridays. I foresee and ictheology based curriculum coming soon. Interesting though I thought salmon only migrated from the sea to spawn. I was under the impression that as fresh water fish they were referred to as steel heads. UP 7597?

Salmon need a place to rest and hide from predators on their migrations in both directions. There aren't any of those places left in the harbor. I think the idea is to provide such a place and study it.

Salmon and steelhead are two different species. Salmon return from the ocean to spawn, then they die. There are several species, but the two main ones in the Willamette system are Coho and Chinook. Steelhead are a trout, not a salmon. Very similar to rainbow trout, except they migrate to the ocean, and return to spawn. They do not necessarily die after spawning.
The harbor habitat is important because the smolts (young fish traveling to the ocean) are vulnerable to predation by the various resident fish in the harbor, e.g. bass, northern pikeminnow, etc. The adults are vulnerable to predation by fishermen. Can't wait to play my part in the circle of life.
