Hmm, I was just reading today how Laika studios is laying off their sculptors and animators right now. Surely one of thos folks might be interested in coming up with something. The problem with the standard Mascot factories is they just redoo the same old faces for all the mascots.

I think we ought to have a PN poll about top design's and pass it on to University with our . Live vote at WCC tourney with absentee voting over the computer at that time. No Stonehouse you don't get two vote's.

Re: Beacon Article About New Mascot
Since most mascots are inherently cheesy I think some sort of crusty old seafaring pilot is the best option... Which will confuse most media who think Pilots has something to do with airplanes
I guess if you had a seadog (which has been considered from what I understand) or something like that it could work, but to be honest that would be the same kind of mascot as UW and GU... The last thing the PNW needs is another mangy fleabag...

Re: Beacon Article About New Mascot
There are some problems with the Sea dog theme.
First off, I'll bet this brewery would be mystified about their rise in T-shirt sales
Then, of course, there's the fact that there already is a team calling itself the Portland sea dogs

Basically a Popeye-type mascot, a reinvention of Wally that wouldn't suck if it was done right.DaTruRochin wrote:Since most mascots are inherently cheesy I think some sort of crusty old seafaring pilot is the best option...

I'm pretty sure the copyrights have expired on Popeye, especially the old one...

Re: Beacon Article About New Mascot
Popeye would be pretty sweet... but surely someone still has rights to him? I'm not really sure how copyrights work for characters like that.
For me... it doesn't really have to do with being a river boat Pilot. It could be a dog, a fish, heck it could even be a lighthouse for all I care (like the Stanford Tree). What will really matter is 1) getting a good suit and 2) getting a professional to do it, at least at the beginning.
And I agree with Trish that it's important for the students to really want it and to take ownership of helping make the decision.

Emphasis on the "drunken" part one of my student years...
But at least he stayed upright. At almost every game.

Be careful with this, we don't want to duplicate the Roboduck fiasco. I favor reimaging Wally, maybe with a smaller head and a less crusty raincoat.

What would Robopilot even look like? I'm mildly curious.

Ughh! As a Duck hater, even the idea of a Robopilot makes me hurl.

Man, this is a tough task. Can you imagine trying to come up with a perfect mascot in the age of political correctness? The drunken sailor looks like an irresponsible dude ready to sail in and hit on your daughter. The pilot with a pipe might by a closet tobacco lobbyist for all that we know. And is the sailor with the parrot on his shoulder feeding the pet or is it a natural bird found on the untamed seas?
So, all that we're left with is a pristine happy goofball...a mama's boy of the sea too tame to scare any kids or cause any harm. As much as I hate the Oakland Raiders since they seem to be the gangster fashion team of pro football, on the flipside the idea of a pristine mama's boy is kind of lame

The Stanford tree... now there's an inspiring mascot. I never understood what that had to do with Stanford.

Re: Beacon Article About New Mascot
My bro went to Stanford so I guess I should come to the Tree's defense... it comes from the seal of the school:
And since their knickname is after a color (Cardinal=the shade of red, not the bird)... well, there's not much to go on with that in terms of mascot ideas. Well, other than Western Kentucky's Red Monster thing.

It's a Junior university?
Maybe someday they'll make it to full University Status.
