Soooo....Blount?
So what happens to Blount after his display lat night?
My initial reaction (taking place at 1:30am or whatever it was out here) was to kick him off the team. After talking with some folks in the office this morning, some were saying suspend him for a few games because, while inexcusable, he was provoked. It's an emotional game, etc.
I don't know, you hate to punish a too harshly for losing his cool in an amped-up atmosphere, but that was just very inappropriate and embarrassing.
Sigh....sad morning for us duck fans.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
If this were the first incident, suspend him, but this is not the first issue. He was suspended last spring for undisclosed reasons (missing meetings is my understanding) kicked out of practice once this fall already, then not only did he punch a backup DE, but then Garrett Embry his own teamate who was trying to play peacemaker, and then an attempt to fight the fans.
I gotta let him go if I am Chip.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
yea....I'm kinda leaning that way - you just don't need that on your football team.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
I cant help but be ashamed about this but... I am more OK with the shot on the Boise player than the rest of the activity... that guy to a degree got what he had coming. Doesn't make it right, but what do you expect when you talk trash to a guy who just got embarrassed. Clearly the guy is not too bright, talk trash? Leave your helmet on. The rest of the who scenario is worse to me.

It depends on who will discipline him.
NCAA rules are actually pretty lenient in Football for a first offense, but it's for the season for a second.
c. During either half, coaches or substitutes shall not leave their team area
to participate in a fight, nor shall they participate in a fight in their team
area.
PENALTY—15 yards from the succeeding spot, first down for Team B
fouls if the first down is not in conflict with other rules, and
disqualification for the remainder of the game and for the
next game [S7, S27 or S38, and S47]. For fights that occur
in the last game of a season, coaches and substitutes with
eligibility remaining will serve fight-related suspensions
during the first game of the next season for which they are
eligible.
ARTICLE 2. a. If the squad member, coach or player is disqualified for
fighting a second time during that season, he shall be disqualified for that
game and suspended for the remainder of the season.
b. If a second fighting suspension occurs in the final game of a season,
he shall be suspended for the first game of the next season for which
he is eligible. This suspension is considered to be his first fight of that
season.
The rule is the same for active players in the game, but since the game was over, I think this applies (penalty is the first half of the next game if the fight was in the first half)
But the university might have a different code that's harsher, or might suspend him longer if there is public outrage. We'll see.
At least he was upset over the loss...

Believe it or not there are no NCAA regulations for post-game altercations. Or at least that is what they were saying on some of the coverage I watched.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
Interestingly, the initial reaction on a Eugene forum was heavily weighted to the "boot him" response. Rough start for Coach Kelly; a bad loss and a national embarrassment.

Not quite true. Yes, the rule talks about first and second half altercations, but the first and second half are elsewhere defined as until they leave the field, for disciplinary reasons. a fight at half time, for example, is considered a first half violation and gets a half game suspension in addition to ejection.
Altercations not involving the game itself are dealt with under the NCAA code of conduct, not the football rules. That's a lot different, and mostly harsher, so it would be better if they used the football rules from his perspective.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
Well, the biggest concern I'd have if I were him is the BSU player not pressing charges... It's not like there is a lack of physical evidence... (At least my moronic, orange jump suit wearing Dawgs were smart enough to keep the criminal activity away from the high definition cameras.) I really wanted to send you a mocking text message 54, but it just really wasn't even necessary, just kind of sad.
But pot shots aside (That uniform is ALMOST amazing looking if they didn't keep those strange chicken fossils on the shoulders), if they let that player stay on the team, what kind of precedent does that set? I mean clearly the team was undermotivated and underprepared, a hard line stance seems the only way to really regain any sense of authority and composure in Kelly.
Can you imagine the plane ride back for Belotti? I mean Mike may have had an obsession with slant passes that were DOA, but he never had discipline issues quite like this...
Also, you gotta wonder if the new Pac 10 commissioner sat there and thought: "I never had to deal with this s*** in professional women's tennis..."

Although you gotta admit, a Serena Williams fight might be entertaining? As long as she didn't get to keep her racket and the other player did.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
Geez, this gets to the point I was trying to make.
"Under no circumstance is fighting acceptable," the NCAA said in a statement Friday. "If it occurs before or during a game, the officials enforce the rules. If it occurs after a game, institutions and conferences decide how to address the situation. We trust our members to handle these situations appropriately. Sportsmanship is everyone's responsibility, including student-athletes, coaches, officials, institutions and fans."
Glad to see that Oregon did the right thing.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
I would go with the Roger Goodell method. Bring in a mentor for Blount. Michael Vick gets a two game (well, more like 34) suspension because he is having Tony Dungy, all-around great guy as his personal mentor.
What Bellotti needs to do is bring back a former player, preferably a running back to mentor Blount and teach him what it means to be a student-athelete who treats himself, his opponents and the game with respect.
My Reccommendation...Onterrio Smith

Hahahaha....oh man...sorry to laugh on such a grave topic for you Ducks fans, but, that is just hilarious. It's like when Isaiah Ryder was mentoring Bonzi Wells. The Wizzinator (Smith) mentoring the punching boy. Just beautiful.

Re: Soooo....Blount?
A new wrinkle in this story. Looks like Blount was more honest than people gave him credit for.
I want to say around the 1:39 mark is where things get interesting.

Yeah, I remember seeing that during the actual broadcast....
At that point Blount had pretty much already sealed his fate BUT those fans deserve the same treatment... people act like idiots when they think they can't suffer repercussions...
