Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
http://blog.oregonlive.com/pac10/2010/06/report_pacific-10_big_12_confe.html
I understand they why, and the how... But wow, this really would change the entire makeup of everything...
You'd almost HAVE to re-shape the BCS... I'm assuming a Pac 10 bball tourney would look more like the Big East's...
I just have to wonder how that would affect the Pilots with scheduling. I'm assuming it would mean a longer, and ultimately stronger in-conference schedule for Pac 10 teams... I"m not sure if this would hurt or help us, but... The first thing I though of when I read this was something along these lines:
(And Yes, I chose the biggest picture possible on purpose)

I could see pulling a team here and there as a realistic possibility, but half the Big 12? Seems unbelievable.

It might be however if several teams (I've heard Mizzou and Nebraska mentioned) defect for the Big 10, as has been rumored for some time. Obviously a lot has to happen, but the Big 12 could go the way of the SWAC in very short order....

Yea. I'm hearing a lot of speculation that there will be a sort of domino effect as soon as someone makes a move. (I'm hoping the MWC offers Donko State next week to preempt the gutting of that conference)DaTruRochin wrote:pilotram wrote:I could see pulling a team here and there as a realistic possibility, but half the Big 12? So when the music stops playing, and the Big 12 is down to 4, where do SMU Kansas, Baylor, Iowa St and Kansas St end up? I'm guessing the MWC, along with Boise St, and 2 teams from among Nevada, Utah St, Fresno St and NM St.

Funny....everyone wants to expand, but that means someone else has to contract. Hmm...

Per The Fan: Colorado is officially in the Pac10! Let the chaos begin.

Re: Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
I guess the most immediate question I would have is, will this be effective immediately?? Because if so... Talk about a scheduling nightmare! I mean they have to completely re-design the entire league structures, now the BCS works (As if it did before...). I'm imagining the Pac 10 will switch to some sort of system like the Big East uses for b-ball... But for football, is this the era of a Pac 10 championship game? On top of that for basketball would the additions of new in conference opponents force teams into dropping other games? Yeesh, what a mess... (But an exciting mess, no less...)

Re: Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
For sure this answers the issue of will the Pac10 take Baylor ilo Colorado? Now the question becomes, will the rest of the Texas schools (UT, TA&M, TT) leave Baylor behind, or will they stay with Baylor and add TCU?
Next item to watch for is will Nebraska bolt for the Big10 tomorrow? If so, the musical chairs will begin in earnest, and some big name schools will be left behind.

DTR: the Pac 10 commissioner said any changes will be effective when the next TV contract begins, sometime like 2012-13.
Being a fan of a mid-major that doesn't play football I'm just looking at all this from a distance and am slightly amused at watching the big conferences slug it out with each other.

Re: Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
Just read that the membership for Colorado starts in 2012... And they will change the name to "reflect the membership of the conference" but wait until the total number is settled. On top of that not just the "10" maybe changed, the "Pac" may also change in order to reflect that the conference no longer just encompasses the Pacific coast.
Here's a rundown on a few things of note:

It hasn't encompassed only the Pacific coast since the addition of Arizona and ASU. But I guess they are now crossing the continental divide.

MEMBERSHIP ISSUES?
Courtesy: Big12Sports.com
Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe has issued the following statement in regard to the University of Colorado.
"The Big 12 Conference has been informed that the University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the Pacific-10 Conference. I continue to work through the process that was agreed upon last week by our Board of Directors to address membership issues, and am working tirelessly towards the long-term viability of the Big 12."

Big East officials were in Lawrence today, compounding rumors that KU and KSU are negotiating with the conference. #kubball #kufball #big12
and
DanBeebe
I am happy to announce that Nebraska will remain a proud member of the Big XII for at least another hour or two.

It's official
Nebraska officially voted to jump to the big 11
The Big10 is now the Big12 and the Big12 is now down to 10.
They could just trade emblems- saves on artwork fees.

Also, Boise St is officially moving to the Mountain West. Will Iowa State be next? How many mountains in Iowa?

UT, TT, OU and OSU looking to join the Pac-? next Tuesday, according to ESPN. Wither TA&M? Rumors say the SEC. I guess the Aggie Marching Band can't envision sharing a venue with the Stanford "marching" band.
Does that mean Utah joins up as the "partner" school for for CU? And brings the SLC market with it? That's a win for the Pac-?

Supposedly Utah only moves if BYU comes too.

Re: Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
BYU will never be approved by Cal and Stanford, similar to Baylor. Plus, doubling up in one media market doesn't bring any extra money to the table. So if they are paired, it ain't happening. Of course, no one thought Texas and TA&M would ever split. And maybe they won't, but it's on the table.

Re: Pac 10 + Half the Big 12 = Galactic Intercollegiate Empire?
Interesting O-Live article, saying that either Kansas or TA&M will be the 16th team in the new Pac-16 conference. LINK
Also, looks like Missouri got the chair pulled out from underneath them!

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told Big 12 counterpart Dan Beebe that he was not anticipating adding any other Big 12 schools, Beebe said.
