Re: WC Play So Far
UPSF,
tha law I quoted is
clearly, his whole head and torso are nearer to the opponents goal line than the defender's feet.
the law is a little poorly written, it that it defines the offensive players parts but not the defenders, but the interpretation I see at the minimum is that any of the offensive player's parts can't be closer than the defender's closest part.
don't forget, it isn't until the next frame that you can see start of separation on the ball from the kicker, and on that frame, they took the offsides highlight off. I'm not sure there is actual separation yet, he looks like he has a long foot.
Like I said---50-50 call.
I looked up the frame rate on youtube, and it's usually 30 fps. so what we see happened in about .033 seconds. Then I looked up the human eye saccad rate (eye movement) and the response to an unexpected stimulus is around 200 millisecs (1/5 sec)- the fastest is 20 millisec if you are panning with foreknowledge.
So even if the call was right, we're somewhere in the region where a ref who has to move his eyes probably can't always keep up with the motion. you'd have to go 5 frames before you could be sure the ref should have seen both parts of the field. and I don't think theres a way to focus on both at once. peripheral vision isn't that good.

Re: WC Play So Far
Looking at a different angle, here's the first frame you can see the ball (at the defender in blue facing the camera's left foot)
Before that, the defender closest to the camera blocks the view, so you'd have to say it's on the kicker's foot.
The two players involved in the offsides call were moving away from each other pretty fast. somewhere in the last two pictures I posted (1/30 second) was the call.

Re: WC Play So Far
contact?
I dunno, the defender sure dragged his foot, but I gotta think a ref could call that either way.
I'm with whoever said trying to pull a trap was a mistake, regardless of the actual facts.

Klose with a Red. Serbia with a goal and 1-0 lead at halftime. This could shake things up a little.

Germany lost.
But USA has set itself up for the heroic comeback of World Cup history.....
Down 2-0 and not marking and playing long ball won't do it.

Re: WC Play So Far
What a brutal decision by the referee to disallow the goal by Edu. Actually should have walked away from that with three points...but the one will have to do.
The announcers were saying that an England-Algeria draw would be the ideal result. Am I the only one who would prefer an Algeria victory? Then all the US would have to do on Wednesday to advance is win. With a draw, we would have to win AND worry about tiebrakers.

Yes, an Algerian victory would be better, but I don't think the commentators are entertaining that result as a possibility.

Re: WC Play So Far
I can't wait to break down the videos this afternoon when they go up on youtube. On the replays they showed, I don't see a single USA foul, and at least two SLV fouls on the play.

At this point, we just need to get out of the group. it would seem that if England wins two and we win the next one, that works, doesn't it?
if we concentrated a little on defense to begin with, this wouldn't be an issue....

Re: WC Play So Far
It does seem like the USMNT is continuously "unlucky". A little better effort might bring more "luck".
A US win over Algeria and a England win over Slovenia gives US 5 points vs 4 points for Slovenia. Question is, do you trust the English who are presumably safely through to play for a win?
However, considering Germany's result today, better wait until after England's match to make any assumptions.

Yes, that works. But what happens if England wins today, then draws with Slovenia on Wednesday? We actually might not be sitting too bad with 3 goals scored in our two ties. If we beat Algeria, the worst we can be is tied for second, right? Then it will come down to goal differential then goals scored, we actually might not be sitting too bad with three goals in our two draws. So a 4-0 victory over Algeria could almost certainly put us through...to play...second place from group D...Germany?? The picture will be much more clear in about 3 hours.

Re: WC Play So Far
England draws with Algeria 0-0. So England is tied with US at 2 points each, but has fewer goals, 1 vs 3. OK, experts, what does that mean for US opportunities?

Re: WC Play So Far
we need to beat algeria to advance. even then, it depends on the score and goal of the other game. It's not just in our hands anymore.

Re: WC Play So Far
I think...
1. We win and advance (5 points for us and with a English tie. Slovenia- 5 and England - 3 or English Win England - 5, US 5, Slovenia 4)
2. We tie and England ties we would advance now (but goals will play a factor) (we would be tied with England to be the second team to advance)
3. We tie and England loses we advance (Slovenia 7 points, US 3, England 2, Algeria, 1)
Pretty simple in my books...win and don't leave your fate to others.

Fixed your post on option three. The points are off, but the results are the same. That tie wasn't too bad, especially because we tied scoring two more goals than England. Let's just win!

Re: WC Play So Far
France, Germany and England all either in trouble or have work to do to get through. I remember talk that France had been gifted an easy path, but they are out if Mexico and Uruguay draw, and they would have to run up a huge score on South Africa to overcome goal differential in a tie. I would not think that is a safe thing to do to the host country. Plus they just kicked Anelka off the team for cussing at the coach. Crazy times. Karma rules.

Re: WC Play So Far
Yeah, all three of those teams are in serious trouble. Germany went from playing a very weak Australian team to a tough squad from Serbia. After the US crushed Australia in their pre-WC friendly, Germany's 4-0 result over them wasn't surprising. I don't know how you can best motivate a team after playing a cupcake game like that. The win over Australia was no barometer of the strength of the team whatsoever...
