Manzano was in 8th with 200 to go. Insane. Too bad Centrowitz just got nipped for third.

According to ESPN Carmelita is the first American woman to medal in the 100 and 200 at the same games since Florence Griffith Joyner in 88.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
As the Olympics come to a close this weekend, I think most will agree that Pistorius was an inspiration to the world for his runs that included the 4X400 relay anchor leg for South Africa.DoubleDipper wrote:Funny? Well maybe.pilotram wrote:I find it funny that all these American swimmers and gymnasts have some relative somewhere that had cancer or another horrible disease. And it was really tough for them but they overcame adversity and won Olympic medals.
What are the odds?
But to athletes like American Bryshon Nellum who was told by doctors he may never walk again after being shot three times in the legs by gang members less than four years ago in a case of mistaken identity, or to another 400 meter man, the "Blade Runner" from South Africa, Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee, or to American Judo gold medal winner Kayla Harrison, who suffered abuse from someone she trusted, these games are the achievement of a lifetime......regardless of the results.
However, just as inspiring to me, was the selection of American Bryson Nellum, who led off the silver medal winning 4X400 relay, as the US Flag Bearer in the closing ceremonies on Sunday. After a long road back from a random shotgun blast to both legs four years ago, he is obviously admired by his teammates.

Medal Count
The US earned only two medals today, the last day of competition, but both were gold. One was in men's freestyle wrestling and the other in men's (international) basketball, which sometimes takes on the look of wrestling.
The final medal count (the top 16):
Gold Silver Bronze Total
United States (USA) 46 29 29 104
China (CHN) 38 27 22 87
Russia (RUS) 24 25 33 82
Great Britain (GBR) 29 17 19 65
Germany (GER) 11 19 14 44
Japan (JPN) 7 14 17 38
Australia (AUS) 7 16 12 35
France (FRA) 11 11 12 34
South Korea (KOR) 13 8 7 28
Italy (ITA) 8 9 11 28
Netherlands (NED) 6 6 8 20
Ukraine (UKR) 6 5 9 20
Canada (CAN) 1 5 12 18
Hungary (HUN) 8 4 5 17
Spain (ESP) 3 10 4 17
Brazil (BRA) 3 5 9 17
Having grown up watching the US compete against the Soviet Union and East Germany, and now watching the emergence of China, it is always gratifying to see the US at the top of the medal table.
Interesting to note, however, that if the USA women alone were a country, they would have finished 3rd in the medal count. I think funding and title IX have produced results.

From Anna's husband today after the US won gold against Spain:
Hmmm, well if we could all go to southern Spain in the winter to watch, THAT would be cool (but warmer).NBA game has no biz in the Olympics. Rather see UP vs. Spain

Ha ha, I have to agree. I started to watch a couple of games, but found that even Rhythmic Gymnastics was better at holding my interest (briefly).PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:Wait, the Olympics had basketball? With NBA players? That must have been SO exciting!
I still consider Olympic Basketball a sport, but when I heard one Rhythmic Gymnastics competitor explain that, "....when you are working with an apparatus, you don't want it getting caught on a sequin or something," I knew it was time to continue fast-forwarding.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Yikes! I didn't see any rhythmic gymnastics, nor did I see synchronized swimming. I did see some synchronized diving. Glimpsed a little race walking. Some of those events seem more like exhibitions rather than actual games. Basketball is at least a game, but it is pretty much a mis-match.

The Olympics had pistol dueling in 1906 (at the Intercallated Games - not officially recognized by the IOC) and 1912. , which would seem to meet Hemingway's definition of a sport.
For some reason it didn't catch on. There were no repeat winners.
And they had live pigeon shooting in 1900. I bet it was real for the pidgeons.
The following is the medalists and their scores:
Leon de Lunden (Belgium) 21 birds killed
Maurice Faure (France) 20 birds killed
Donald MacIntosh (Australia) 18 birds killed
They agreed to split the then -tidy 20K prize money, which makes you wonder what the ideal of Amateurism in the old games was all about.

The Cold War Games
I believe you are correct, Dueling Pistol Shooting would have been more Hemingway's style.........although the blood, guts, flopping around of dying birds, and flying feathers of the pigeon shoot would certainly have delighted many.PurpleGeezer wrote:The Olympics had pistol dueling in 1906 (at the Intercallated Games - not officially recognized by the IOC) and 1912. , which would seem to meet Hemingway's definition of a sport.up7587 wrote:E. What I most like about the dueling pistol event is that it required competitors to shoot at mannequins dressed in frock coats with a bull's eye on the dummy's throat.
I fondly recall the poison umbrella tip event of the Cold War Games, but that was a different era.......sigh!

Gold in Britain!
Best Quote from the Games?
Saw this on Twitter today:
Don't know about you, but every time I saw someone get a medal, and saw the purple ribbon, I couldn't help but think of UP!

I am offended by this. I mean, the fact that it took 7 pages before someone posted a pic of this hilarious ad, it's just not excusable.
