Re: 2014 Recruiting
There have been way too many transfers announced to be able to track since Goodman/ESPN published the list a couple of weeks ago.......I would say at least 100 more.NoPoNeighbor wrote:That's a pretty long list already. How's Altman gonna fit all these guys on the roster?
There's got to be somebody out there who is right for UP, and vice-versa.

Regarding recruiting, I sit around waiting to hear announcements and rumors of possible recruits. According to this, I'm doing it wrong: Recruiting Bag Men.

UP is probably not on Obi's list.....he's visiting Vanderbilt and Duke this weekend......DeanMurdoch wrote:One name jumps out at you.....Sean Obi is transferring after a fine freshman year at Rice. Would imagine he'll draw interest from plenty of high major schools with the kind of numbers he put up this season, though.

Re: 2014 Recruiting
Yes, I think a transfer post/center is the way to go. Face it, a transfer, even with only one year of college experience, is a much more known quantity than a high school kid because of the disparity in the level of play/opposition between the two.DeanMurdoch wrote:So if the Pilots are going after a guard with scholarship #3 (Tyson?), what will happen with the fourth? Transfer center, even if he has to sit out a year? I see Goodman has already started tweeting about players transferring - his big list o' transfers will likely be out soon.
To bring in a one-and-done senior from another program would result in just too many seniors giving speeches at next year's awards banquet, IMO.
I've lost track of all the centers who have announced their pending transfers since Goodwin last published his list, but as he's expected to publish an updated list tomorrow (Monday), I think UP should be looking for a post with tons of potential who would like to sit out a year while learning the Pilots system.

Here, two names to chew on -
Sergej Vucetic - 7-1, 240. Serbian guy who played in seven games and just 16 minutes for Nebraska last year as a sophomore. Had similar (lack of) playing time for the Huskers as a freshman. Two seasons of eligibility left. South Dakota, Evansville in the mix for this guy.
Matthias Runs - 7-0, 240. Originally from the Netherlands and a product of the Canarias Basketball Academy. (Sound familiar?) Had to sit out 2012-13 and lose eligibility for some delayed enrollment ruling, then only played three games for a decent St. Bonaventure team this year. Two seasons of eligibility left.
Both of these guys played so little last year, you wonder if one or both will fall into the Voldy category of "denied opportunity to compete" and would be eligible right away for their new school.

From his body of work to this point and his "project" status, I really don't think he's displayed the work ethic that would have fit with the "all-in" concept the UP coaches and team members expect or will accept. I know VC listed UP as having been one of the schools that made him an offer....but we all know VC is not always 100% correct.
I hope young Kingsley does well at Tennessee.

Re: 2014 Recruiting
Seems like Kingsley Okoroh will actually be heading to California. In a funny/weird little twist, Okoroh decommitted from Tennessee to follow coach Cuonzo Martin to Cal.

Okay, that is wild. So in a span of about 24 hours....Okoroh commits to Tennessee, Martin leaves Tennessee for Cal, Okoroh decommits from Tennessee, and Okoroh commits to Cal.
Only way this could have been more interesting is if it had all gone down tomorrow on NLI day!

Re: 2014 Recruiting
The important thing to know about Okoroh is that, as a student-ATHLETE he was going to Tennessee to pursue an educational opportunity, even if his thoughts on that changed suddenly.

wrv wrote:Is there a realistic possibility that the Pilots will offer relatively local West Albany player Nate Sherwood?
Sherwood to Idaho.
Oregon Hoops wrote:Nate Sherwood, 6'8" forward from West Albany, will play next season for the University of Idaho. Sherwood has steadily improved but became increasingly dominant in his senior season, reliably posting 20 points and 10 rebounds per game and culminating in a 43-point, 17-rebound performance in a third-place win over Madison at the Oregon State Championships.
Nate Sherwood was one of those players that at first appeared destined to play his college ball in Oregon. He is the son of Bill Sherwood, who played for the Oregon State Beavers from 1986-1988. His oldest brother, Nick, golfed for Oregon State. Nate was certainly one of the top prospects in the state this year. At 6'8" and around 210 pounds, he can hold his own down low, but he can also shoot and handle and stretch the floor. Time will tell, but the Beavers may have missed out on a good one. Likely influencing his decision, Nate will join his brother, Chad, a walk-on freshman guard at Idaho.

Re: 2014 Recruiting
I was hoping the Pilots had a greater interest in Sherwood, too bad. But good luck to him. He may be better than advertised but I will defer to staff judgment about that.

Re: 2014 Recruiting
Well, according to Reveno’s tweet there’s more, whether it involves a player from “Koeln” (Cologne) remains to be verified.
Reveno said: "Portland Pilots are going to sign a couple more good ones today. #signingday.”
I am curious whether the source of the information this early on signing day can and will be revealed, but that might be hoping for too much.

Hartwich Stats
According to that link Hartwich is 6-11, 220. Averaged 10.1 points, 8.7 rebounds per game and shot 66% (!) from the field. I guess 49 blocks in 14 games isn't bad either. The Rhein Stars were 10-4 this year and second in the West Division of the NBBL, which I think is Germany's U19 league if google translate is steering me in the proper direction.
If this is indeed the guy, they must have done some serious work to find him because Google isn't telling me much else!
Going to be an interesting day.

Re: 2014 Recruiting
If this is true about Hartwich, great! We need a center to enter the program this year.
However, if it is a 4th true freshman being signed today, that also means that we could REALLY use another year of eligibility for Voldy. Otherwise, 2015-16 projects sophomores starting at the 3 (Todd), 4 (Taylor), and 5 positions. And the roster would again be extremely unbalanced: 3 upperclassmen total (Pressley, Wintering, Zubizarreta).
Filling a couple of next year's scholarships with JUCOs or transfers could also help the balance situation.

Do they really still use fax machines? If so, these 18 year old kids probably needed to learn how to use one first.
