Given the job Porter has done, and the state of the program, how could one not feel better about Reveno and his time on the bluff.

I saw this morning that the Pac-12 has hired a search firm to look for their next commissioner.
That got me thinking. Has UP ever used one of these search firms for one of its hires?

Terry Porter has been fired as the men's basketball coach...Ben Johnson will takeover the rest of the season.
More to follow, I'm sure...

Re: Where do we go from here?
Turns out it is simply a "leadership change."
UP Athletics wrote:PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland Athletics has announced a change in the leadership of the men's basketball program, effective immediately. Terry Porter, who is in his fifth season with the Pilots, will be replaced on an interim basis by assistant coach Ben Johnson.
"I would like to thank Coach Porter for his service to the University," Portland Vice President for Athletics, Scott Leykam said. "The timing of these changes is never ideal, especially with all the disruptions this season that have been brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, it was decided that it was best to move forward now and focus on the future of the program and the search for the next head coach."

I'm told Scott was going to make a change a couple of weeks ago, but for some reason unknown to me, decided to wait until the end of the season.Dean Murdoch wrote:Very, very surprised.

But to anyone who watched last night's debacle against BYU, apparently including Scott, something had to be done immediately so that a search could begin and the student-athletes would not be left to wonder, not if, but when TP would be fired.

Goodman makes a very good point here: "the grind of college hoops" on NBA players and coaches.
1. Larry Steele
2. Michael Holton
3. Terry Porter
And just watching 47 year-old Damon Stoudamire acting child-like in frustration and rage last night before he was assessed a technical foul**, one can see how this coaching business can eat a person up...
** I don't blame Damon, UOP was ahead of GU 45-40 with 13 minutes to go, when the calls started going GU's way, two UOP post players fouled-out, and GU went on a run to win 76-58.

Random/off-topic thought: Are they ever going to update that "coaching change" background pic of the Chiles Center? Considering how out of date that logo is and all. Not sure if I ever saw those specific flags during my time.

I like Terry. He should have been fired two years ago.
I hope the lesson was learned on the buyout clause.

A great sense of relief for us all, perhaps including Porter, who may have been motivated to remain partly for the wrong reasons.
Call me naive, but I have always thought highly of coach Johnson and would not be displeased if Leykam's low budget plan included the possibility of Johnson's promotion for a year or two, and of course he would have work with a buyout clause.

Re: Where do we go from here?
I'm disappointed it took this long to hand the team over to Johnson. Johnson is my top choice among the assistants and I'd liked to have seen him made coach at the beginning of the season.

I like Terry too, but he should never have been hired to begin with. I only hope that Scott learned significant lessons from the previous process.

Well, yeah. I don’t think I Kept it secret it was a dubious hire to begin with, but once he was hired with two former head coaches as assistants I figured he might surprise me.
He surprised beyond all expectations.

While I’m not expecting a win today, I was surprised that as game time approached, it was the first time in over two years I was looking forward to the game.

Re: Where do we go from here?
After thinking about it more might it make sense to approach this hire the same way they approached the hiring of Coach Meek?
I'm fairly certain that no high-qualified D1 assistants are going to be overly enthused by this job. But a very successful and knowledgable D2/D3 coach? Its worked wonders for the women, worth consideration for us to imo.

The biggest red flag to me always was the fact that he brought both his sons with him. Neither of whom had credible D1 offers on the table besides UP. It was a prevalent rumor in my time at UP that other players were very disgruntled with the amount of minutes the two received. This cannot be good for the health of the program culture wise.
This is in no way an indictment of Franklin or Malcom as I only ever had good interactions with both of them. More of an indictment of not seeing the potential problems that came with the prospect of Terry bringing both of them in.

Say what? Franklin played under Bennett at St. Mary's and had to sit out a year to transfer to Portland.

Another list of coaches, this one from the D2/NAIA ranks -

Matt Logie was mentioned in this thread last time the Pilots had an opening. Lo and behold, here he is again now that he's gone from Whitworth to Point Loma.

Re: Where do we go from here?
As Dean mentioned, Franklin transferred from SMC, but you are correct, having TP's sons on the team was a huge disruption and there was no doubt that TP was turning away recruits and sitting other players who were better players than Franklin and Malcolm.GoPilots19 wrote:The biggest red flag to me always was the fact that he brought both his sons with him. Favoring his sons created such a negative culture in the program it took until this year to reverse it, but by then many of key players had left the team...

I was under the impression he was a walk-on at SMC? I might be wrong on that though.

Re: Where do we go from here?
No, he was on scholarship, and Bennett, who some consider ornery anyway, put up a big stink before letting Franklin out of his scholarship...which was a little strange because Bennett himself played two years for his father at Mesa Community College.GoPilots19 wrote:I was under the impression he was a walk-on at SMC?
