Re: 2016 Offseason
An SI article addressing Karnowski's immediate future....but it does not come to any conclusions about what he should do.DoubleDipper wrote:It is no surprise really that Przemek Karnowski, at one time predicted to be an NBA first rounder, was not invited. Injuries have hindered his development to some extent....and there is probably at least a 50/50 chance he'll return to GU for his redshirt senior year, IMO.
http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2016/05/06/gonzaga-bulldogs-przemek-karnowski-nba-draft
He's certainly not going to be a NBA player this coming year, and as he's still rehabbing from surgery for a bulging disc, it would seem his best course of action would be to return to GU to get a graduate degree, continue his rehab, and eventually play some college basketball with a good chance of returning to the NCAA Tournament.
Karno, get healthy, stay healthy, then earn some money....either playing basketball or with your two GU degrees.

Not really a surprise, Watson chose his hometown college, San Diego St.DoubleDipper wrote:An interesting addition is the aforementioned Devin Watson transferring from USF.....Watson ranks #4 in Goodman's top 10 transfers.
Watson, originally from the San Diego area (El Cajon) is apparently considering Cal, UNLV, San Diego State, Fresno State and Kansas.

And speaking of Chier and his teammates, nine of the 11 players on campus for summer school are in the gym doing individual workouts right now. For those who have not seen Hartwich since February, he's muscled-up to 250 and looking really good in the upper body.Dean Murdoch wrote: Nice to see Chier pop up on my Twitter feed this morning.
Seems every time I see Coach Porter he's on the phone....do you suppose he's still looking for assistant coaches?
Last I heard, the end of this week is the self-imposed deadline to name two more coaches to the staff. Saw of couple of potential candidates on campus last week; one of which, if it was who I think it was, has better coaching credentials than 90% of the head coaches in the WCC....excellent at recruiting and X's and O's.
No word on Alec Monson except that the LDS Church has asked him to extend his mission in Ecuador beyond the normal 2 years in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit that country.
Joseph Smoyer and Malcolm Porter will graduate in the next week or two and will be enrolling in UP's second summer session. Just an educated guess, but based upon the current roster, I expect both Joseph and Malcolm to redshirt, along with Franklin Porter, this coming season. And depending on what kind of athletic shape Alec is in when he returns from his mission, he too is a possible redshirt.....not unusual for a LDS returnee.

What's the status on a strength and conditioning coach? Didn't UP's move on?

That's a darn good question!!up7587 wrote:What's the status on a strength and conditioning coach? Didn't UP's move on?
Cat Wade has been holding down the fort as the "Interim" Director of Sports Performance since April after Brad Scott left for the Atlanta Braves in February, and I know the Athletic Department was interviewing candidates for his position two or three weeks ago, but no word on who got the job.
I wouldn't mind seeing Cat continue in the position. She's got the experience, has been at UP since 2011 as Brad's assistant, and she knows what it's like to be a D1 student-athlete, having been the team captain and goalkeeper at Oklahoma, where she is apparently still OU’s career record holder in goals against average, saves and shutouts

If she can get Hartwich to bulk up, she's got my vote.

The beer you drink is too strong to use for bulking up. I've bulked up plenty on cheap lager.

The latest ESPN transfer list is out, and Kameron Chatman is still listed as undecided:Dean Murdoch wrote:It's now been several days since Malcolm Porter announced he'd be attending UP. But no official word from UP about it, and I think a strong assumption could be that's because there was no NLI signed. And if he didn't sign an NLI, that would be an indication that Malcolm is walking on and there's still one scholarship available.DoubleDipper wrote:Geezer reported on the transfer of Kameron Chatman from Michigan in General Sports here:
https://www.pilotnation.net/t5730-kameron-chatman-transferring
And if there is one scholarship available, I certainly can't think of a better way to use it than on a Kameron Chatman transfer!
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14390188/college-basketball-transfer-list
As mentioned in another thread, Malcolm is the current holder of the scholarship that was vacated when Jason transferred... but there is nothing to prohibit Coach Porter from revoking that scholarship and to personally pay for both his sons to attend UP, at least until TP's two year point kicks in and UP will pay their tuition.
Some are saying Chatman would just sit on the bench behind Maker if he were recruited by UP, but jeez, couldn't they at times be on the court at the same time and when they are not, wouldn't it be great to have fresh legs as they share court time?
For those of us who marveled at Canaan Chatman during his two years on the Bluff, seeing his son on the Chiles Center court could be just as exciting. He's a local kid! Coach Porter wants to protect his borders! Let's go for it, UP!

Re: 2016 Offseason
There was a very nicely done profile of "Interim Director of Sports Performance," Cat Wade on Portside with Pilots this evening. It showed her working with the Men's Basketball Team and there was commentary from Women's Coach Cheryl Sorenson.DoubleDipper wrote:That's a darn good question!!up7587 wrote:What's the status on a strength and conditioning coach? Don't know for sure, but I believe AD Leykam has given Cat a year to define/prove her role as the interim director before taking away the "interim" tag. If that's the case, IMO the AD is going to have to bring in someone to work specifically with one of the major sports teams on the Bluff to take some of the load off Cat, because to do otherwise would spread Cat way too thin which would not be fair to her or the athletes.

Not only is Chatman heading to Detroit, but the Chatmans are heading there.DTLegend wrote:Hate to burst your bubble there DD but it looks like Chatman is heading to Detroit
Canaan Chatman, former UP star and dad of Kameron, is now an assistant coach at Detroit. The elder Chatman has been a longtime AAU coach and has a lot of recruiting connections. Detroit's head coach said, "Coach Chatman's national AAU and high school connections provide a borderless aspect that helps bolster our recruiting efforts at Detroit."
Sounds like a package deal to me.....UP knows a little about kids wanting to play for their dads.

Saw Brad Scott in the dugout at the beginning of last night's Fort Bragg game between the Marlins and Braves.up7587 wrote:What's the status on a strength and conditioning coach? Didn't UP's move on?
He seemed to be having a fun time, but I'm quite sure it was not because of the Braves record (as of this morning they were mired in last place, 21.5 games out of first place), but more likely because of the "goose bump" atmosphere of the game being played on the "field of dreams" that was built at Ft. Bragg, NC in less than 4 months for this game.
A day spent on America's biggest military base by the players and then a night at the ball park surrounded soldiers and their families made for an "unforgettable" experience for all.

Sheesh, if you had told me that Chatman would end up playing for a middling mid-major I would have figured that UP might very well be the destination. The Detroit Titans, go figure.
