Re: Pilots tonight
Yeah.... its definitely embarrassing... its a matter of flipping two switches on the mic... the second of which the person singing is supposed to do. Not really much the university can do when the singers don't flip the switch (well other than get a system that takes that power away from the performer and into the booth...) But yeah.... I'm with f-wozz... I think the crowd singing together sounds way better than one performer anyway, nothing like a good pre-game warm-up for the vocal chords!!!

Sound Issues
They just need to hard wire the mic for the anthem.
It fails a few times a year by cutting in and out. Run a mic line to the field!

Re: Pilots tonight
Whoever is in charge of the national anthem event, if it's a matter of just the performer flipping a switch, just needs to COMMUNICATE very clearly what the performer needs to do.
If it's a system problem EVERY year, that's easily fixed. Whoever is in charge of the SYSTEM, fix it or buy new equipment. It's important enough that UP will pay either way. (If it happens again, someone needs to be replaced. The level of competition and 5,000 people jammed into a beautiful soccer stadium deserve competency when it comes to the basics.)
This kind of thing happens everywhere once in a while. And I wasn't surprised it happened on opening night. However, if it is a semi-regular problem, competency is demanded by the integrity and importance of the event.

Re: Pilots tonight
yeah... its more a matter of nerves than anything... you get in front of 5K people and start singing, somehow I think forgetting the words is more of a concern than flipping a switch... which probably contributes to the regularity of the problem

Re: Pilots tonight
I'm partial to the Jimmy Hendricks version.
Heard it live the first time.

More than once. For a while, he played it at the start of every concert.

Re: Pilots tonight
Geezer, glad to see the real king of rock and roll in the intro to that clip. Also Dick Cavett, now there was a talk show worth watching.

Re: Pilots tonight
the reverend Richard Wayne Penniman?
Yeah, he's one of my all time favorites, too.
After the clip plays, there's a link to the whole interview with Cavett.

Re: Pilots tonight
I probably shouldn't admit this but I definitely had to google Dick Cavett to find out who he was... More minutiae for my next trivial pursuit game....

Re: Pilots tonight
What the heck... since this thread is already so high-jacked I'll pile on. Here's my favorite Jimi song, for obvious reasons:
Just wait till the solo with his teeth at 1:40. Ridiculous.

Maybe we should have a Wild Thing award after every game (like the baseball movie with Charlie Sheen)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfPgj4bviKY

Re: Pilots tonight
Ha ha ha! No, Geez... didn't shoot my old lady down, but I am named Joe, and I would say one out of every... oh... five or six new people I meet will make a "Hey Joe" joke. My dating issues are much deepter rooted than that... perhaps related to the fact that the Pilot Fight Song is now my ring tone.
And how can we not have yet mentioned Jimi's song about the University of Portland? Or, at least, we can pretend it's about us:
