And a chance for paybacks for the 1 goal loss in the playoffs last year. A win tonight would be a big step for the program.

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
I'll be there for sure... should be a beautiful night. But I do worry that a good chunk of the crowd will take off after the women's game. It will end at 7:30 or so and it's a Friday night... I don't know. I really hope a lot of people stay, because it would be great to see a full Merlo on National TV.
But either way, should be a great game and a good opportunity to bounce back after some tough losses.

Quite possibly the most vile candy ever made.
They would, however, likely make a nice splat! upon a high speed impact...

Yeah, looks better in person, too. They changed the color to a darker purple.
You folks that didn't stay for the game missed a good one. Started slow for the Pilots. I though for a while we were going to revert to Boom ball, eventually, the mids took over the game. nice job.
Leland wright ran past the defense on his score with a great thru ball from Colin. Frankie had a great shot on his that brought out an extended "Frankie Lopez" cheer. I'll bet they are glad they didn't get saddled with having to chant "Steven Hosseinmardi". With the prefunking they apparently did, they might not have gotten it all out.
We thank coach Wurzburger for the own goal. It was just what we needed to get us started.

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
Haha yeah... That own goal was an absolute mess... But Frankie's rocket off the corner kick was a tremendous shot... Definitely a big statement goal that really seemed to demoralize the Huskies. Interestingly U-Dub was definitely the sharper and more dominant looking side in the first half, while UP seemed to be forcing the action a bit much, which didn't work with the larger, stronger UW defenders. The second half was like night and day, UP spread out the field, used their quickness when appropriate and really controlled the flow of the game nicely. Oh and btw Kasey definitely picked a good game for his first time watching the men play in person, and let me say he was a delight to listen to in the booth. It's a good thing to have him back in the area promoting the beautiful game

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
The Huskies certainly were outrunning the Pilots to every ball in the early going. It looked like they might have ran out of steam in the second half because they started so quick.
As usual, several great saves by Austin.
The own goal happened in front of us and Drummer remarked that it looked like the keeper might have been out cold for a few seconds after his own guys ran him over.
Frankie's goal off the attempted clear of a corner was a beauty. Another great performance by the men, and it was sweet to see the clowns with the UW flag silenced.

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
We were sitting amongst those clowns from UW. There were quite of few of them.
Unfortunately, my wife and I had to leave at halftime, but we were happy to see the equalizer right before we left. Their keeper did get nailed pretty good in the scrum. I'm really happy to see that we got the win.
Geezer...I know what you mean. It looked like boom ball there in the early going.

One comment on Colin Warner. It was a pretty physical game in the midfield and Colin was up against some pretty big dudes and still managed to hand out more than he took and controlled possession in the midfield.

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
I noticed that too, I turned away from the TV a few times to find the guy in the white kit on the ground.... And Colin the culprit standing in the area looking at the ref like "what, he's twice the size of me!", made me smile every time...
Haha I must say, from my playing days, knocking the big guys flat on their rears has to be one of the most satisfying things you can do, of course you have to be willing to take the punishment too in the process

Goalie was definately out for 5-6 seconds face-down in the grass. I think he was wondering what just happened!
Great game. I was shocked with how fast Washington was...at least at the beginning. Think they came out too fast?

Great observation, Geezer. Warner was battling the whole game with Washington's #14 George John (Paul Ringo was the other midfielder... ha ha ha... wow, I'm just killing myself right now). ANYWAY... John was definitely quite a bit taller and heavier than Warner and he and Collen were getting after each other all night, but at the end of the day it was Warner who managed to win the physical battle and he definitely did control the midfield. He also got a late yellow card which was probably deserved but also a great indicator that he was not going to have any of John's kinda cheap late desperation physical play.
Another note... what a TERRIFIC goal by Frankie Lopez. He had a rough first half with Washington draping two of their big goon defenders all over him (and those dudes were big) and they definitely took him out of his game by roughing him up a bit and than Frankie started pressing and trying to do too much with the ball. Early in the second half he got a yellow card out of frustration after mis-handling what would have been a scoring opportunity near the top of the box after that breakaway shot by Irwin was kick-saved by the Washington keeper. So he was definitely having a rough go of it out there, and then all the sudden he had a moment of sheer brilliance with that goal and from that point forward he was all over the field - tracking back on defense, helping out up front... really lifted his game. He showed me something last night beyond ability... he proved that he can battle back from adversity. I think he could be in for a special year.
Also... was impressed with Davidovic last night. The men looked pretty good. They could definitely be in the mix for the WCC title - Santa Clara is 1-3 now after starting the season ranked #2 in at least one poll. And I don't think any WCC men's team has a winning record right now. If UP can shore up the defense a bit and continue getting this kind of offense, there's no reason they can't go into WCC play as one of if not the favorite.

Re: NATIONAL TV TONIGHT!!!!!
Santa clara was actually ranked #1 in two polls. Man! their season hasn't started out like they hoped. I think it"s too early to be talking conference title. The men are too up and down right now. At the start of the game last night, my wife and I looked at each other and both said "ain't gonna happen tonight. The men have to realize that when a team comes in to Merlo, they are going to be jacked up. Even though attendance doesn't match the women, it's still above most of the NCAA, and Merlo has history.
