new bell tower announced
So more changes to campus. Looks pretty cool. I'm hoping they can learn some sweet songs.

What, Merlo Field not iconic enough for you?Remarked Father Beauchamp, “For years, the University has longed for an iconic campus symbol.
(I kid).
Really, that looks pretty cool. I like that the top section matches that of the chapel.
Will it play the Victory March?

This is awesome; a great addition to campus.
Now we just some Mr. or Mrs. Money Bags alum to donate a big fountain of some sort (hmmm, maybe someone wealthy enough to have a boat named after themselves....)

Hmm. There was the Hunchback of Notre Dame; didn't he live in a bell tower? What about the Hunchgeezer??

i've seen the plans and in the very far future plans there is no st. mary's lounge and a semicircular sitting area with an open view of the willamette in all its glory, and a sweet view of downtown

Re: new bell tower announced
I gotta be honest... this is the first time I've heard about this... it's so cool to be surprised by an announcement like this!
I think it's very cool and I definitely agree about the campus needing something iconic. Plus, it fits well with the school really trying to embrace and display it's "Catholicness", which I know it has been doing for years now.
And actually, I think there is a certain amount of charm having bells tolling noon and on Sundays stuff like that... when I was living in Europe I grew to really enjoy that. And it would definitely be cool if they did something like playing Christmas carols during December and things like that.
So yeah... all in all, I like it. It might seem a bit frivolous in some ways (as in, does the school really NEED a bell tower?) but I think having something iconic and memorable and that they can put on logos and postcards and things like that... I'm down with that for sure.

A really wonderful addition. I look forward to seeing it completed and hearing it, of course, as well.
It should be a shining light of dignity and pride for many years to come.

I have a bell tower roughly the same size down here in AZ. I am about a 1/2 mile away and it's great to hear the soothing sounds. I'm sure you guys will enjoy it.

Hopefully they can ring it for soccer victories and the like, too. That could be fun...

Re: new bell tower announced
A new article just got posted in the Portland Daily Journal of Commerce. (Anyone ever heard of that? Me neither.) Anyway, not a bad article... has some good details:
http://www.djcoregon.com/articleDetail.htm/2008/10/08/University-of-Portland-gets-tower-New-bell-tower-is-a-symbolic-action-says-universitys-executive-vic
The one sad thing is that is said it won't have any public access to the top. I guess I kind of expected that, but I was hoping that there might be an observation deck that would overlook the mountain and the city.

The naysayers said the Chiles Center couldn't be climbed, either.Stonehouse wrote:A new article just got posted in the Portland Daily Journal of Commerce. (Anyone ever heard of that? Me neither.) Anyway, not a bad article... has some good details:
