Re: WPS draft 10-6-08
Remember on another thread we were discussing the lack of sponsors for the new WPS league. Someone mentioned there was no TV deal no Jerseys etc. Well to everyone's relief it appears that these details have already been nailed down. The excerpt from the PortlandPilots.com site are as follows:
Based on the estimated viewers the advertising revenues should be substantial.
The WPS also announced today a multi-year television agreement with Fox Soccer Channel. The agreement, which begins next April, provides rights for the exclusive WPS Sunday night game of the week as well as the league All-Star Game on Fox Soccer Channel, while postseason coverage will reach over 80 million homes nationally on Fox Sports Net’s owned and affiliated regional sports networks. A minimum of 20 games will be broadcast on the network over the course of the regular season and the WPS All-Star Game on Fox Soccer Channel. The Fox Sports Net’s postseason coverage features all games: two semifinal games on August 15/16 and the WPS championship game the weekend of August 22/23. The contract is three years with a fourth-year option.
Based on the estimated viewers the advertising revenues should be substantial.

Re: WPS draft 10-6-08
Good reporting, Auto.
I was hoping this new league might turn out to be the real deal. There is seemingly a growing market for women's soccer.
That TV revenue stream is very exciting news, indeed!
(I don't get FSChannel, but I do get FSN. So I guess I get to see the semi's and the title match.)

I looked at it this way. She was one of the last ones cut from the 2008 Olympic team...that at least makes her one of the top 25 players in country, right?

Re: WPS draft 10-6-08
GU here is a link to Graham Hayes' analysis of the picks. After the Internationals and Olympic team drafts were completed each team had to conduct its own evaluation of what its needs were at each position. Going into that thought process was the liklihood that the team could actually get the rights to actually sign the international players they drafted. Like I posted before some of the players will have to get loaned or let out of previous committments to actually play. As you can see from the article, Marta was drafted by LA but her actually being signed is still a question mark. Hope that helps.

Re: WPS draft 10-6-08
Thanks AP! That was a good read on how the new league is taking shape and distributing its player-personnel. Can't go wrong with a Graham Hayes article. 28 spots over 4 rounds is not as bad as I first thought. In that light, Angie is certainly the quality player we all know she is!
