Olivier made the All-Rookie Team, as noted.
Well, that's a different rant. The players who got the award instead should have an asterisk with an explanation:
"not as good as the freshman, you understand, but still pretty good"
Nobody left Jim Brown, Lew Alcindor, or Michael Jordan off a first team their freshman years....

That's because no one had thought of having All-Freshman/Rookie teams way back then.

Aw, I didn't mean to bust your chops too hard...
It should be noted though that the increase in players and programs in collegiate athletics merit additional opportunities of recognition, like All-Rookie teams. Heck, 15-20 years ago, you couldn't make 3 All-American Teams plus 2 All-Rookie Teams in women's soccer because there just were not enough great players to warrant it. Now though, I think it's great. It means there are a lot of up-and-coming players to watch and the game is getting better as top players choose from a variety of strong programs and not just an elite few...

Re: 4 Pilots Out Of 60
I'm apparently keeping Geez hours tonight, but as UPSF was discussing another stat that might be interesting would be some sort of a "shot chart" seeing where shots came from and whatnot (I mean a desperate shot from far away or whatever is different from a breakaway obviously), that combined with the percentage spent in the defensive third of the field... That said finding those stats for Womens college soccer might be a little challenging ...

Re: 4 Pilots Out Of 60
It really is difficult to measure a goalies worth with stats. There are so many factors. The quality of shots on goal that DaTru mentioned is one. I believe it is also meaningless to measure a defender's worth with stats. I am relatively new to Pilot fandom, but from what I have seen (and one reason I love Portland soccer), we control the ball, value each possession, and eat up huge amounts of time with our possession. Our defenders play a lot, aggressively, in the middle of the field rather than back in front of the goal (Kassie is really good in the middle of the field). This can leave us vulnerable to occasional breakaways.
Therefore, several conclusions - 1- Although Kelsey has few saves, a higher-then-normal percentage of her saves may be high quality saves on breakaways, and 2- Our low goals-against stats may be largely the result of good ball possession, INCLUDING the work done by defenders in the middle of the field and overlapping on the sides. This also gets to the point that on a good team, everyone is a defender and everyone is an attacker. Goals against is not a measure of JUST the back line. We defend well all over the field, and, conversely, our back line is definitely part of the attack.
3rd point - I get up a lot earlier than you Oregon guys.

Aleppiek - 5:30 - I'm impressed. Sun's been up here awhile.
Enjoy the game. I'm jealous as hell. I can't even watch (DirectTV), but I'll be listening (until 1:00AM).

You sound like a true Pilots fan, fan. 1:00am in the morning? Yeah, you got it bad - just like the rest of us. I guess geography is meaningless when considering the Pilots Womens Soccer team.

FANatic,
I hope you are going to make it out to the Field tonight?
Fan, it is people like you that make me wish I had a slingbox to share some Pilot love with some of you East Coasters.
Here's to a lopsided pilot win tonight. I'll be sure to toss some pokies at the opposing coach for you... ( Inside Pilotnation joke)

Not exactly an East coaster, Aleppiek - central part of upstate NY, quite a ways from the coast. What's a pokie, and why aren't you busy at work after getting there at 5:30 AM?

Pokies are essentially M&M's only with a thicker candy shell... I think. Geez is a self proclaimed Pokie Sniper.
And I am "multitasking"
And to us Left Coasters, anything East of Michigan is East Coast.

I think Geez has a webspider looking for all references to pokies and an alarm goes off in his house.

Sounds like you're definitely not a native West coaster. Having grown up in Philly, I know that for East coasters, anything west of Chicago is "out West." Now living in Portland, anyone whose state has an ocean on the right is an East coaster!
Thanks for your comments from back there. Very astute.

Geez, when Alcindor played freshman weren't even eligible to play. He only played varsity 3 years!!

up7587, dropping the bombs. I love it!
Speaking of Alcindor's freshman year... I'm sure people have heard the story, but that season UCLA's varsity team was undefeated and won the NCAA championship. But they did lose one game that year... to their own JV team, which (of course) had the freshman Alcindor on it.
