2008 Goal of the year
I just looked at the video highlights from last year for the home games.
I would have to give Sophie's goal against Pepperdine as the winner. Her determination to head in the rebound was amazing.
Have to give Megan's mid-air shot against Santa Clara as close second. Definitely the prettiest goal of the year.
What is your vote?

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
Thinking back, there were a lot. I'll post a couple just so you watch them.
My vote is Elli's first goal in the NAU game. here
it had wicked pace on it and an outswing that opened up the eyes of all like me, who were lined up with the shot.
Her second goal of that game (the chip over the keeper into the far corner) was nice, too.
Not far behind was Kreminski's game winner against udub, mostly because of the work that Sophie did to set it up.
here
There were a bunch more, though Megan had a great free kick goal, jessica had a nice finish pushing up - mAn, there were a LOT.

Geez, you got the same video twice, the UDub highlights.
And to think I had you written in on my PilotNation HOF ballot. I guess you will have to wait just like Jim Rice.

Fixed.
Here I figure the delay getting into the hall would be because I hadn't filed the paperwork that I retired, or because I would still be considered active on account of that post on a cooking forum a while back...

Jessica's shot in the James Madison game was pretty sweet. That could be my favorite.
The others mentioned above are all good choices, especially Megan's against Santa Clara.

I have to go with Megan's soft-touch volley/chip v. Santa Clara. That was one of the finest goals I've seen at Merlo (or anywhere else).

I think if Brian Wheeler (the Blazer radio guy) called Pilot games he'd finish Megan's goal with an "Oooh that was NAAAASTY!"

I really liked Megan's goal against NAU in the first round of the playoffs that was captured on those highlights. She was a woman among girls in the one on that highlight...

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
It sure is fun going back over the goals from last season. Great idea, Gnarley.
My votes - Ellie's goal was the best pure shot. Her shooting form was perfect. Notice both feet off the ground, landing on the shooting foot, and the power and bend on the shot. Sophie's header was easily the most gritty and determined. Friend or foe, you have to absolutely love that attitude. Megan's was classically beautiful and probably the most difficult to execute. I have to go with Megan's - a thing of beauty that very few players anywhere could duplicate, and, as I have said on other threads, enhanced by her sister's reaction on the bench.

I think that would be reserved for a high save in traffic by a keeper (from a corner kick, e.g.).

I've got to go with Megan's volley (via Jessica) against Santa Clara. That'll stick with me for years.

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
Megan's goal v SCU was amazing. The ball from Jessica Tsao was good but Megan runs in and turns and volleys it witht eh side of her foot like that is the most routine thing in the world. She made it look easy and it was very very difficult. Our seats are at the perfect angle for that goal and it was a wonder from a remarkable player. I remember when she scored thinking that I knew what I had just seen because we had a very clear view, but really didn't believe my eyes.

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
JT was a forward in HS then converted to a D-back as a Pilot. I'm sure she had a "been there, done that" familiarity as she approached the box. I sat behind the goal in that game...just off the far post! I could see the shot coming...but it didn't look like it had any pace! But after viewing the clip..I stand corrected! It was a wicked shot and nicely placed too!
Megan's goal was unbelievable! To me it ranks up there with Michelle's "The Goal" solo run against USD. The amazing part to me was Megan was running towards the cross from JT...receiving it from her right! But, she's able to baby and deflect the shot to her left and slightly behind her...towards the center of the pipes! Fantastic! She floated and slowed the shot enough...for all of us to admire and watch it go in! Even the Bronco's must've enjoyed the slow motion affect! Check out the clip again...the last 2 defenders certainly did!

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
Megan's goal was Marta-like. Pure brilliance, quite simply. (On a perfect pass from Jess, let's not forget.) I thought Megan later in the season looked more and more brilliant, though sometimes still a tad rusty. Her footwork was often dazzling, and she just killed so many would-be tacklers. Not too surprised to hear she was the 2nd overall pick in the WPS draft. Just goes to show that when you are that great, even playing up here in the old podunk NW won't give you cover. (Unlike what some former un-named Trail Blazers might complain.)
Sophie's goal was a champion's goal. Reminds me of a fullback, (that's American football), trying to go over the goal line with about eight big bodies in his way. He's stopped, but keeps grinding away until he gets that ball into the endzone.
Of course, when you score close to what: 70 goals in a season, there are going to be numerous dandies.

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
I am not going to try and turn this into a voting competition both goals were magnificent in their own right, but think of the mindset at the beginning of last season. Megan was a known goal scorer of the highlest level. Sophie played midfield and no place else since she was a little kid. In the middle of the year Garret moves her to forward and tell her to score xx goals before the end of the year. That is a BIG adjustment.

Actually, Sophie played Striker the year before, almost from when she came back from the World Cup.

Re: 2008 Goal of the year
Don't know if anyone else caught this. During last Sunday's Aston Villa v. Stoke City match, AV's John Carew scored a goal remarkably similar to Megan's Santa Clara goal. The ball coming in was struck harder but from about the same spot. Carew was in exactly the same spot as Megan: corner of the box facing the touch line. He just touched the ball underneath tipping it (again, much harder than Megan's) over the keeper and under the bar.
The reaction from the broadcaster was remarkable. Something to the effect of: "Wow, I've been watching football for lots of years and I've never seen a goal like that before." I just chuckled and said to myself "You haven't seen Megan Rapinoe!"
I haven't been able to find a replay of Carew's goal online, but maybe one of you Webstars can find one and post it. It was magnificent, but no more so than Megan's!
