WCC Tie-Breakers Empty WCC Tie-Breakers

Post by goldhelmet Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:42 pm

It is now looking like a highly probable scenario that both St Marys and Portland could finish tied, most likely at 10-4, if St Marys finishes off Pepperdine and LMU and UP wins 2 of its last 3 games.

So, can someone tell me if this is still how WCC tie breakers are settled for tournament seeding?

1. Head-to-Head: St Marys and UP split the series 1-1.

2. Records against top WCC teams in order:

Gonzaga - both were 0-2.
Santa Clara - most likely fourth place finisher. Portland is 1-0 with one game to play and St Marys was 1-1.
San Diego - most likely fifth place finisher. Portland is 1-0 with one game to play and St Marys was 2-0.
etc., etc...

So if we lost to USD but beat SCU and finished 10-4, we would get 2nd because of the 2-0 record vs SCU. But if we beat USD and lost to SCU (more likely scenario IMO), then we would both finish 1-1 versus SCU and 2-0 vs. USD. I believe if you exhaust the rest of the teams, both UP and St Marys would be 2- 0 vs. Pepperdinde, LMU (assuming we take care of business on Saturday), and USF.

3. What would be the next tie breaker?? confused

Of course, it would nice if won the last three games and then it wouldn't matter... Very Happy

The next tiebreaker is RPI. we lose that one.
PilotNut did a nice workup of that on another thread.
So - we just have to win out and all is good.

RPI.. Yikes. Looks like we best win them all...or, win 2 of 3, and make sure one of the wins is over Santa Clara. Going 2-0 vs. SCU is the only way we win a tie-breaker scenario if I'm not mistaken...

Exactly right. PilotNut's workup was HERE

It would have been nice to have USD beat ST Mary's.

The short of it is St. Mary's has to lose (not likely)
or we have to beat LMU and SCU. In that scenario, SCU also has to be a higher ranking than USD, so root for them.

If we beat USD that's cool too.

Yup, win out it is. SMC has two home games left, against LMU and Pepperdine. Unless Pepperdine gets a major change in performance by next weekend, SMC will roll. So, come on Pilots, finish strong!
