Pirate Town Lives!
Though it has been razed as the beginning of the Superfund cleanup below the bluff, Pirate Town has been been recognized by none other that the American Institute of Architects in a Photography show of Bruce Foster's portfolio they are hosting downtown.

I'm going to go see it next week. It's at the AIA gallery at 403 NW 11th Avenue and is open 9-5, Monday-Friday.
They didn't even do this for their other pet historical cause, Memorial Coliseum.

Thanks for posting the article Geez. It is somewhat of a unique place. Too bad a small portion of it can't be "saved"
But, the progress will be great for all involved. What a great acquistion.

Re: Pirate Town Lives!
I thought UP and their "corporate interests" or whatever were trying to wipe all traces of that place from the earth.

Ha ha.
Oh, I don't think it's anything that sinister. The place was a liability and it had to come down any way for the cleanup to start. The site under the building needs cleanup as much as everything else.
Now there's a nice pile of gravel somewhere on the site they can use for construction.

Re: Pirate Town Lives!
Yeah... once UP finally purchased the land earlier this year, it was inevitable. All it would take is one skateboarder to break his leg there for the school to be sued. And actually, that place had pretty much become a ghost town anyway after it started to get attention in the local media even before UP purchased the land... it wasn't cool anymore once every wannabe photographer in the city went down there.
It was one of those cool and interesting underground urban moments, but it's time had passed.
