Recruiting: Lauren Hansen
I note that the Ducks for 2011 landed someone named Kelsey Foo, a midfielder from the Bay Area, who, according to the women's soccer recruiting page, has national team experience, so apparently a nice get. They also received 3 more commits for for 2011.
That stated, I am interested whether anyone thinks that Lauren Hansen may well bring Duck recruiting to a new level. Also interested whether anyone thinks Hansen's loss here has had or may yet have a negative impact on the Pilots ability to land some national level recruits. I frankly do not know how much Lauren was invovled in the recruiting process while playing second fiddle.
Garret was recently quoted on this board as indicating recruiting is getting no easier--and, though I doubt it is meaningful, we have just one commit for 2011.
Perhaps the question is misplaced as Pilot recruiting will proceed full steam without missing a step. Hmmn?

I saw her, too. My guess is that she made the drive up I-5 to scout the Cougs.

There was chatter last spring that we were the leader in the clubhouse to get Ohai until Lauren left and then Ohai comitted to UNC. It would seem that Lauren was doing a good job of making inroads with top players.

Re: Recruiting: Lauren Hansen
In the end, I think that success is what makes or breaks recruiting in any sport. Our recruits know that we're in it every year. Although Smith said it's getting harder, I wouldn't expect much drop off at all. The program is in a radically different place now than when Tiffany Milbrett decided to come play at Portland about 18-19 years ago around 1990-1991 (in my college class at UP).
Leading the nation in attendance for several years and having the flattest field will continue to help us too... That's just huge. Athletes want to be appreciated.

I agree. I don't understand why anyone would want to play soccer anyplace else.

Many of the players Portland attracts have further soccer aspirations. The coaching staff's credentials as well as team's success are paramount.

Re: Recruiting: Lauren Hansen
We have about 8 new bodies to bring in, in 2011. I find it hard to believe that the Pilots have only one commit. (That's one commit that we know of.)
I know Lisa Sari has taken on a more prominent role in pursuing recruits. Yes, it hurt to lose Lauren. I felt like I lost one of my best friends. But the Pilots are built on the tremendous foundation that is the legacy of one person: Clive Charles. His spirit is the biggest thing the program has going for it!
Garrett doesn't show his hand until he decides to. Expect the same and probably even higher level recruits in 2011 and beyond. (The confidence in that coaching staff is through the roof. But don't expect to see it on Garrett's face in an interview. He is in complete control of that operation, in consultation with Bill Irwin.)
Go Pilots! Beat the Zags!

Re: Recruiting: Lauren Hansen
The Pilots' ranking in the top 4 this season, their 3 alumni from the winning World Cup U-20 team of last year, the top-class coaches and plenty of other positive factors unrelated to soccer will keep Pilots in the hunt for the best talent. Wonder when we'll see another international recruit? Canada has been good to UP this century.
