Tsao, Foxhoven Earn Academic All-America Honors
TOWSON, Md. --- University of Portland women’s soccer players Jessica Tsao and Danielle Foxhoven have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-All-America Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday. The duo was the only set of teammates in the nation to earn first team honors/
Tsao, a junior defender from Portland, Ore., is a three-year starter for the Pilots as an outside back. She earned second team All-West Coast Conference honors this year and has nine assists from her defensive position. Tsao has helped the Portland defense to a 0.38 goals-against average and 15 shutouts, both good for second in the national rankings. Tsao is a biology major and posts a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average.
Foxhoven is the only sophomore out of 33 players to earn Academic All-America honors this season. She leads the nation in points per game (2.75) and is second nationally in goals per game (1.1). A first team All-WCC honoree for the second consecutive season, Foxhoven has scored 22 goals with 11 assists in 2009. A business major from Littleton, Colo., Foxhoven has a 3.75 grade-point average.
Tsao, Foxhoven and the rest of the No. 2 Pilots (20-1-0) have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Playoffs and will host Virginia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m. The match will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest.

Not just getting it done on the field. They are the only two team-mates on the first team!:

Haha it was less mysterious... Well that and I wasn't 100% sure how the merging feature worked...

Re: Tsao, Foxhoven Named First-Team Academic All-Americans
Not only are they the only two teammates on the 1st team, but they are the only two underclasswomen on the 1st team. The other 10 (yes, there are 12 on the 1st team, but only 10 on the 3rd team) are all seniors or graduate students.
There are 2 juniors on each of the 2nd and 3rd teams, but no sophomores anywhere except Danielle.
Hearty congratulations to these outstanding student/athletes!

Haha, speaking from personal experience, the labs can be ridiculously time consuming/detail oriented based on the number of credits you actually get, so getting an A- in one (especially with all the soccer commitments) isn't that unfeasible, even with the most stellar of students...

Jessica's GPA is presumably computed on four semesters of work (i.e., her frosh and soph years). A typical student takes about 16 credits per term, or 64 credits total. A GPA of 3.98 could result either from a B in a 1-credit lab or an A- in a 3-credit course. Either would basically give 255 grade points from 64 credits; after rounding, this gives 3.98.

I was a tenth of a percentage point from an A in my General Chemistry lab. A group of us science majors were talking before a class one day, and a theater major asked us, "You only get one credit for a three hour lab? How does that work?"
Well, it was more like the scheduled lab time was three hours, then you add writing the report, sometimes following up on your experiment the next day, etc. Spring semester of Organic, doing your individual project? Yikes...

Haha I don't know why they don't incorporate lab grades into the overall class grade and just make it 4 credits... But that's another discussion for another time...

Remind me. Is Jessica a redshirt junior? Is she a senior academically? Oops! I checked the roster too -- straight junior

jc, are you sure she is a RS Jr.? I didn't think she was. The roster on the website doesn't list her (or anyone) as being a RS.
Edit: she = Jess
