Regardless of what the fuskies say about the up coming match, i am concerned. If i remeber right, they had four or five yellow cards in our last match an all but one was for dangrous play. They are a very physical team an when they get ahead even more physical.
However, i am very encouraged by the way our starting unit looked vs utsa. Granted, not in the same league as the fuskies, but having Soph back it looked like the girls were clicking on all cylinders. Here's hoping it was not an illusion.

Post by purple haze Sun Nov 14, 2010 8:47 am

All who saw the Oct. 3 game know how tight and hard-fought it was. Today's Oregonian says this, in part:

The Huskies routed Oklahoma 4-0 in the first round Friday night.

"What they did against a quality team like Oklahoma was pretty impressive," Portland coach Garrett Smith said.

If today's game bears any resemblance to the first game Portland and Washington played Oct. 3, it would be surprising if both teams scored more than three goals combined.

"Washington definitely has our attention," Smith said. "They're a quality opponent. I think their final RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) is way lower than what it should be. I think it's another sign that soccer on the West Coast gets a little disrespected."

The Pilots defeated the Huskies 2-1 in two overtimes after Portland after Schmidt's penalty kick goal with 63 seconds remaining. The Pilots had to overcome a 1-0 deficit before Amanda Frisbie's equalizer in the 81st minute.

That first game was a rugged and physical affair in which 30 fouls (Washington was assessed 19 and Portland 11) were called and five yellow cards (Washington four, Portland one) were issued.

I was listening online, and the sound went out. So I had to switch back to the video. just in time to see UW jumping around.

Nope, it's true. I think the lack of scoring through the season came back to bite us. Cruz might have needed to come out a little earlier. Kreminski on earlier.

Great season by the women's team. This senior class, though without a championship, was one of the most accomplished in school history. Tremendous student-athletes and citizens all. We wish them the best in their futures off the Bluff.

I will say they were at times dominant prior to the penalty kicks, outshooting Washington by an enormous margin. Just could not put one in the back of the net.

Washington was superior in goal.

I'm just sick at how this turned out. I think UW now ranks higher on my "hate 'em" list than Oregon.

That being said, a big thank you to the team for a great year and especially to the senior class. You'll be missed...but we'll be talking about you and your accomplishments for years. Smile

A very disappointing end to the season. That being said this was an outstanding team that provided a lot of very exciting soccer this season.

Good luck to the seniors and looking forward to next season with the rest.

Soccer can be so beautiful and so unfair. Cheers to the senior class -- "class" is the word that describes them in all ways. Cheers to the rising freshmen -- stars for years to come. Cheers to sophomores and juniors who will carry on. From one end of the bench to the other, Pilots made this a season to remember. This fan salutes 2010 Pilots coaches, players and all who support them.

Post by eProf Sun Nov 14, 2010 7:00 pm

This reminds me a lot of the 1997 season. At the beginning of that year, I had been looking forward to our going deep into the playoffs--possibly winning it all--because we had a great group of seniors (such as Baumgardt, McIntosh, Pierce and Ribaudo), supported by a talented group of juniors (such as French, Eaton and Stiles). At the end of the regular season, went through a bit of a scoring drought. This continued into the playoffs, and we lost at home in the first round 1-0 to UCLA.

This year, we scored 6 goals in our last 5 regular season games--many against teams that were not that formidable. Washington is a tough enough team that we knew it wasn't going to be easy.

It was tough to watch the team get so many chances in the second half and fail to score.

In the shootout, Washington did a good job put their PK's in the corners. Did Hailee manage to touch even one of the 11 PK's Washington shot? The one they missed was wide left.

Sad for the Pilots, they should have done better although it appears that the concerns expressed throughout the year about finishing were well founded. I often hear the "soccer isn't fair" excuse but in the end, it is brutally fair. Brutally. I'll miss Jessica and Elli, two remarkable defenders as well Sophie, Kendra and other seniors who worked so hard. I look forward to the improvement in the younger players and another solid group of veterans returning. At this point, I always say that every team except one will lose their last game and the rest, like the Pilots are left to say, "maybe next year".

That game looked more like a round 3 or 4 game with that level of play. I wish Washington well to represent the NW region.

It was nice to see A Frisbee take a penalty shot. She stepped up with huge confidence and style and hammered it in. At that moment she sent a message that there is much more to come. The torch is now passed to next years team. \\ Trenchcoat

Eprof,

I was thinking exactly the same thing after the game. I thought back to that UCLA game an remembered what i told frenchie then an what i tried to convey to our girls today....they were unlucky. It really is a shame that the team that dominated the play of the game loses because of penalty kicks!

What really galled me was after the game seeing the fuskies get a team photo taken in front of the goal. It reminded me of a Little League team that just won district! Note to u of w, you get a team picture in the playoffs after you win the CHAMPIONSHIP! Visit the Chiles Center for pointers.

Putting this into a historical perspective as a fan who has followed the team since the days when we were happy to make it past the first round before Milbrett led us to the Final 4, for me personally the pain of losing many times in the Final 4 before the first national championship was much greater than this...

But, I do ache for the team all the same...

Seeing Sophie walk off the field was heartbreaking. One of the saddest things I've seen.

I know they're all feeling down right now, but I hope this team knows how much they still are loved. Thanks to all of them for coming to Portland. I will remember them fondly.

That rubbed me the wrong way, too. But I guess it speaks of expectations or lack thereof for a program that feels the need to do that in an early round playoff game.

Stunned is the word. Disapointment can come later, and I don't really care if the huskies had their picture taken. They earned their celebration and good luck to them.

But these Seniors kept up a tradition of great teams we love to watch. They will remain players who gave us great moments. And we'll all be in the seats again next fall for another run by the team they helped build.

The rest of the players would do well to emulate their example as they take up the mantle.

Soccer is the cruelest of sports. The best team on the field isn't always the one that wins the prize, and only one team gets the reward.

There is always the promise of the future.
