RISE Campaign Empty RISE Campaign

OK, doing my duty as a PR shill for UP. Smile

First, the links:

Oregonian article from Saturday: http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/12/lean_times_rich_aspirations.html

RISE website: http://rise.up.edu/

I would strongly recommend checking out the RISE site - you can see renderings of the proposed health and wellness building, the new library, and read all about the different scholarships and programs that the University hopes to create.

Now for the news update: Hopefully many of you have heard about this already, but on Friday UP unveiled a $175 million capital campaign called "RISE: A Campaign for the University of Portland." This is the public phase of the campaign - to date, $105 million has already been raised during the silent phase and resulted in the construction of Shiley Hall, the new Bauccio Commons, Fields and Schoenfeldt Halls (dorms), Romanaggi Hall (the updated/renovated Old Science building), and the Belltower.

Also on Friday, Darlene Shiley (wife of the late Donald Shiley '51) announced that she has given UP and additional $8 million for engineering scholarships and faculty research/development - resulting in the school of engineering now being named the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. In 2007, the Shileys gave $12 million for the construction of Shiley Hall. Their total giving to the University is now more than $20 million.

The campaign’s goals are divided into four major themes, each with funding targets: (1) Pursuing academic excellence and faculty funding - $70 million; (2) Providing access for all students and direct assistance - $45 million; (3) Developing faith and leadership - $10 million; and (4) Enriching the campus community and physical resources - $50 million.

Specifically relating to athletics, goals are expanding the weight room, redoing the men's locker rooms in the Chiles Center (the women's locker rooms were redone a few years ago), and increasing scholarships.

Most of you should receive a special edition of Portland Magazine soon, which focuses entirely on the campaign and hopefully will inspire a lot of people to contribute to this great vision.

Dumb question maybe....but where is the new rec center going to be installed? In the location of the old barn or somewhere else?

Based upon the drawings on the RISE site, it looks like the location is where Etzel Field is now... the original plans/master plan for the River Campus show a new baseball stadium. However, the timing for the rec center seems a lot sooner than any development down below...? That same master plan shows grass/quad where Howard Hall sits now (it seems to me that while Howard is a cool old building, it would be quite difficult to re-purpose... unless the PN brewery would fit in there...)

Not a dumb question at all.

The drawings definitely show it adjacent to the Chiles Center where Etzel Field currently is. That location isn't set in stone as far as I'm aware, but I do know that the hope is construction will begin sooner rather than later. (Of course, that is contingent upon donations.)

What that would mean for the baseball team in the meantime, I don't know. I think that's a question that still needs to be figured out. Realistically, construction on the River Campus won't begin for at least 5-6 years, and probably considerably longer than that.

Regarding Howard Hall, I don't think anyone knows what will happen with it. My vision would be that the first floor be converted into the University Museum (which is currently in the basement of Shipstad), complete with a cool athletic Hall of Fame/museum section. Then, the upstairs could be converted into an event space for lectures/plays/etc.

Of course, I'm sure that would be very expensive...

Is there a map showing the layout of all of this, Stonehouse? I'm curious about the location of the new library... Exciting stuff.

Great pieces on the Rise campaign in the latest edition of Portland Magazine. I'm going to make a donation in the new year...once I get back from a short vacation in Mexico.

There is a big picture of the new rec center in the Portland Magazine, and it refers to it being located where the main parking lot is now, and that they would like to be breaking ground in a couple years... that would me the parking structure would need to be done first... which would then have to start construction soon...?

You would think so. Analogous case here at CSU, they wiped out a parking lot for a new building long before the new parking structure was finished. Hopefully they're smarter at UP.

Even though Upsilon Omega Pi and other fraternities were kicked off campus by UP in the ‘90’s, and the current administration is totally opposed to their return, it was gratifying to note some Upsilon fraternity members still think very highly of the university.

Joe ’64, and Travis ’93, Hollman give $500,000 in custom wood locker facilities to the UP Athletic Department:
