Re: UP @ USF 1/20 7:30 PM
Looking on the bright side, the guys only had 8 turnovers for the game and Waterford and Douglas both did much better in that department. The team just shot the ball poorly on the road. How often will Stohl and Waterford combine for just: 7-22 from the field? Ugh.
Free throw shooting was a strong point too: 21-23 for 91%! Stohl was 11-11 and Sikma was 6-6 from the line. We would have lost by a worse margin without that. I'm guessing our shooting went extremely cold when we fell behind by 17 points before coming back to make it more respectable. Is that what happened?

Re: UP @ USF 1/20 7:30 PM
Shooting was poor because USF identified the Pilots who could not hurt them, sagged off, and kept the 2 or 3 scoring threats neutralized most of the time. And sure enough, the other Pilots could not step up and hit shots or make plays.
This is a good strategy that we are going to see a lot more off.

Jared and Nem are getting pushed further and further away from the basket to get shots off. So their accuracy is falling. Also, notice that Douglas got 27 minutes to Waterford's 15 tonight. I think we'll see more of that. Eric is not taking open shots, and not hitting them when he does try. Douglas penetrates best, but his height disadvantage often get his shot rejected. He did get 11 points, but only 4 of 14 shooting (most shots on the team, btw). With the outside guys not hitting, the inside guys are not getting open looks. The PG position has to start producing offense, so that the other players can get away from double teams and in-their-face defense.onetouchfutbol wrote:Looking on the bright side, the guys only had 8 turnovers for the game and Waterford and Douglas both did much better in that department. Well if I were a coach with a number one shooter in the nation I would at least figure out how to get him a shot before 10 min roll off the clock for one. It seems Stohl was just standing in a corner most of the first half. (Not saying that Jared should get all the shots and handle the ball all the time)
When they came back within 5 I got my hopes up, but shot selection made me leave the game early. I couldn't take it anymore. Point guard play is hurting us. Don't know where the fast break went, starting to look like pilots of the last few years in that dept.

All good points. Once again I argue for setting more screen plays and pick and roll plays to let Jared and Nem get a little bit more space and to allow our big men to make more effective cuts to the basket... But, I won't second guess what Rev has done with the team this season. Some could argue that we've been overachieving as a team. I think we're better than USF, but, as other posters have noted they're a good team statistically in terms of team defense.

One touch, I can't agree ith UR comment that the Dons are a worse team than the Pilots after last nites showing.
Thye shot 57% to our 38, 3 pt 45.5 to our 31.8% had 18 assists to our 11.
Outside of FT shooting they clearly dominated us.
Hopefully we will reverse the beating at the Chiles.

Dons Knock off Pilots in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The San Francisco Dons dealt the Portland Pilots an 81-74 loss Thursday night in West Coast Conference action at War Memorial Gymnasium. Senior forward Luke Sikma scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Pilots, but Portland struggled to 38 percent shooting from the field in the loss.
Portland (14-5, 2-2 WCC) had its four game winning streak against the Dons snapped wit h the loss. San Francisco (9-10, 3-1) moved into a second-place tie with the Gonzaga Bulldogs with the victory.
Sikma collected his eighth double-double of the season for the Pilots. Senior guard Jared Stohl led the Pilots with 19 points despite shooting just 3-for-10 from the field. Stohl was 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Nemanja Mitrovic and Tim Douglas added 11 points each for the Pilots.
Sophomore guard Michael Williams led four Dons players in double figures with 18 points, 15 coming in the decisive second half.
San Francisco led by a 31-28 margin at the half and then erupted for a 17-point lead early in the second period. Portland would cut the deficit to five at 60-55 on a three-pointer and runner in the lane by Douglas with 6:32 remaining. The Dons quickly responded 6-0 run and a three-pointer by Angelo Coloiaro with 3:57 remaining gave USF a 69-57 lead. The Dons made enough free throws in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
The Dons took a 31-28 halftime lead after a rugged first 20 minutes. Foul trouble plagued both teams in the opening period as Blackwell paced the Dons with eight points and eight rebounds, while Stohl made eight free throws to pace the Pilots.
Portland will conclude the road trip with a game at Santa Clara (11-9, 2-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Broncos knocked off Gonzaga, 85-71, on Thursday night. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest and on the radio at 800 AM (KPDQ).

Several long passes to layup on the inbound after scores comes to mind.
We had our best offensive game of WCC play. Need stops

Well, I guess I was going on our information going into the game: our RPI (#42) vs theirs (#123) as well as our record. But, you could argue that we've been overachievers this year too. All I can say, is that it's easier to do at home than on the road. If they (the Dons) can keep winning and actually break into the top 100 in RPI by the end of the season, this loss won't look so bad.

How can Rev say "wehad our best offensiove game of year (WCC)", WHEN We shoot 38% overall ? If defense wins games then we were bound to lose. It was pretty bad in the second half.

Re: UP @ USF 1/20 7:30 PM
They still put up 74 points. Not bad, but it could have been more with better shooting. The offense will be fine. As for the defense I know the Pilots pride themselves on it but if they are in the middle of the WCC in pts allowed/possession. If they get that tightened up they will be very dangerous.upsailor wrote:How can Rev say "wehad our best offensiove game of year (WCC)", WHEN We shoot 38% overall ?
