Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
NICE!!!!!! I was trying to find the score on-line but couldn't anywhere.
This is a HUGE win for the guys against a quality team on the road.
That just might punch our ticket to the playoffs, but a win or tie against Santa Clara on Sunday will seal the deal.
Way to go Pilots!!!

WoaHH!!
This is HUGE
A win Sunday could raise their RPI enough for an At Large bid!!
They are on the bubble right now...
Wouldn't it be great to have both teams in the tournament again!!
Ain't missing Sunday's game for anything!!

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Wow!! Another in a long string of impressive games for the men!
This got us much closer to an at-large birth... man, soccer hasn't been this exciting on campus in quite some time!
Gooooo Pilots!
FYI, SCU scored in at 109:16 (44 seconds left in 2nd OT) to win at Gonzaga... I think this is the best we could have asked for, for SCU: a L-O-N-G, exasperating win (to keep their RPI high). Hopefully they will be worn out on Sunday, and we can pounce.

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Good point, Pilot Nut! It also helps us to have Gonzaga lose, since they were potentially in the mix for an at-large bid due to some good early-season wins despite their poor play of late.
Now they have pretty much faded from the picture, and UP looks solid as the second choice out of the WCC - that is, if they consider the WCC worthy of two bids, which of course they better!
Boy it would be great to take it to the Broncos on Sunday!

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
I'm not so sure the higher Santa Clara RPI isn't offset by the lower Gonzaga RPI.
UPSoccerFanatic talked about this last week. Once you are in conference, RPI levels out over the conference opponents.
The Cal Poly result was huge for that reason.

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Purplegeezer's right on that one. But, with Cal Poly's good win-loss-tie record, the men helped themselves tonight not only by improving the first element of their RPI (their winning percentage) but also by adding a team with a good record to the second element of their RPI. A win on Sunday would be phenomenal, as it would help the first element and really would help the second element since SCU has such a good winning percentage.

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Fair point... maybe it's a wash, since one team would have to lose to the other no matter what. The RPI can indeed be a bit of a headache, but I have the sneaking suspicion that since both GU and SCU are quality teams, they cumulative effect of them playing against each other is probably helpful... or at least more helpful to each other than, say, UCLA beating Oregon State or whatever.
Beating GU shouldn't lower SCU's RPI, since GU is a good team with a decent RPI, and losing to SCU shouldn't hurt the Zags too much, since the Broncos are top five.
But then again, I don't really know.
What I DO know is that if the Pilots win on Sunday, they are into the NCAAs!

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Yup, Stoney, it would be hard to keep them out...
Santa Clara's second and third elements might be enough even if we loose.
UPSoccerFanatic's getting right on that. Only 3560 more games to enter..

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Yeah, come on UPSF. It's not like there's THAT much to do out there in Boulder, right?
Just looked up the men's RPI... Santa Clara was at nine as of 11/11, while Gonzaga was at 46.
http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2007MSOrpi1.html
UP was at 42, while Cal Poly was at 31.
So the Pilots are definitely moving on up, and I'm assuming that GU is high enough in the RPI to not hurt Santa Clara at all.
Of course a lot depends on what the teams ahead of us do, but even so... I think if the Pilots bring home a W against the Broncos, they will be impossible to leave out.

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
Gonzaga's 46 should give Santa Clara bonus points (40-80) Not as much as if they were top 40, but definitely not penalty points.
Us beating a 31 RPI give us the most bonus points

Re: mens soccer vs cal poly
I just went to the Cal Poly site. The Mustangs had a crowd of 2662 at the Game!
That team must have a pretty good following, I bet the Mustang Manglers (that's what they call their version of the drum squad) went home a bit down..

You know, just a week or so ago one of our posters was calling for the ouster of Bill Irwin.
Is that poster still around ?

Can I just say how nice it is to go to portlandpilots.com, see a story on the men's soccer team and NOT find the words "dropped" or "heartbreaker" for more than two weeks in a row?
