Don't Tread on Denver
The university of Denver doesn't want Metropolitan State College at Denver to change its name to Denver State University. They claim people would get confused. The cheerleaders might even sport the wrong color pompoms.
Wonder where they got that idea?

"We have provided Metro's trustees with detailed documentation of the confusion that exists in such cities as San Francisco, Portland, and San Diego," where two universities bear similar names, DU board chairman Trygve Myhren told me.
Yup.
Yup.

Re: Don't Tread on Denver
So that's why we have green pompoms, our chief marketing officer has an identity crisis. And the [chief marketing officer] at the University of Portland says it creates an 'identity crisis.' "
It's an even worse problem in San Diego because:
After reading this article, I had to check my calendar to make sure it's not April 1stNew students show up at the wrong campus

They should call it Rocky Mountain State or Mile High (club) University or Ball So Hard University or something like that.

Central Colorado University? Imagine if PSU was Northern Oregon University. I also heard rumor (or jokes, I couldn't tell), of a PSU-OIT merger. Just make the whole thing OIT or PIT.

Geez, you are either a great historian, very, very old, or conversant with the internet. The Vanport Extension Center is still "The College that Wouldn't Die" – I just hope our Men’s Basketball Team can go back to playing them annually -- and give them back their damn pompoms.PurpleGeezer wrote:I liked Vanport U.

Re: Don't Tread on Denver
I'll go with great historian.
But why else would they have a mascot named Victor E. Viking other than for the alliterative aspect?
The Vanport Vikings at one point had one guy who was the Basketball, Football, and Baseball coach. He was the AD, too.
Anybody know who that was?
We could have been the Rosebuds.....
Speaking of history, the HAL 9000 computer is 20 years old today.

I wouldn't have minded that nickname, actually. The city's first hockey team went by that name. That team also competed for the Stanley Cup.

First USA team ever in the finals. Players from a later edition became the Chicago Blackhawks.
There was a baseball rosebud team, too.

When I was a "student" at UP Joe Holland was the PSC AD and had been a coach in virtually all the sports going back to the Vanport Vikings days, but I really don’t know any connection he may have had to the Rosebuds name.
I know of the Rosebuds ice hockey team. My grandfather was the president of the Rosebuds Booster Club from 1915 to 1917. Apparently, according to my grandfather, the Rosebuds went to the Stanley Cup finals while he served in that capacity – or so he told me 50 years ago. (That always seemed an exaggeration, and I’ve never checked it, but if RCP and Geez also say it’s true, maybe it is).

Great story.
Doubt no more...

The rosebuds even got their name engraved on the cup.

Fun stuff! 18 regular season games to prepare for a 5 game final series? Looks like they didn't make too many line changes, either.

And this team still exists.

Wow, Gramps wasn't exaggerating! Who knew? Can you imagine the uproar today if all 5 games were played on Montreal's home ice!up7587 wrote:Fun stuff! 18 regular season games to prepare for a 5 game final series? Looks like they didn't make too many line changes, either.

Re: Don't Tread on Denver
Checked out the DVR on my return from SF and saw a very vulnerable Gonzaga team.
Saw some of the Pitt v. Marquette game; Larry made the right choice if you want a packed-house, and exciting, winning basketball; who amongst us doesn’t? :face:
Looked in at the LSU vs. Alabama basketball game from five days ago (two days after the BCS Championship) and saw a prominently displayed sign that read: “Will LSU cross the half-court line?”
Fast forwarded through the Pats/Broncos game; can we wait another 8 months before uttering the "T" word?
