What game?
What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
So the Villa Drumsquad is thinking of making an appearance to one of the Men's BBall games. What game should the Drumsquad show up to? (minus the drums)

Why only one? I would love to see them bring some energy to the student section at all home basketball games.

True, but we don't want to step on "Pilot Riot's" toes all at once. If we hit up the San Fran game or BYU and the response is good, we will most likely show up to LMU and/or SMU

I agree that Pilot Riot and the Drum Squad should work together for all home games as a matter of school pride, and for the success of the basketball program! Work together!
A big, loud, raucous student section makes for a HUGE home court advantage... we need both groups unified!
A team effort needs to include all the various student groups, alumni, fans, as well as the coaches & players.

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
But to specifically answer your question, I would vote for the following:
1/19 vs. USD
and
1/21 vs. USF
and
1/26 vs. GU
and
2/4 vs. BYU
and
2/9 vs. LMU
and
2/23 vs. SMC
So yeah, it would be awesome to have you guys there for every game! I think you would be more than welcome...

Well stated, PilotNut. I think that all students and student groups should feel welcome to come and cheer no matter what sport it is.

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
Yeahhh I have to agree with my fellow Admin on this one... Suck it up, do all your reading and homework before and go to all the games to cheer your team on. Picking and choosing is stupid and, frankly, kind of insulting to the student athletes that are out there representing you and your school at every game.
Coordinating groups and people is NOT that hard, and it really shouldn't be a special event "making an appearance"... I mean politician makes an appearance, you are students and fans (allegedly), you should be there every game. Thinking like that is the reason why EACC sounds more like Wimbeldon than a basketball arena far too often...

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
Well said, DTR. The Cameron Crazies (Duke), the Kennel Club (Gonzaga) and the Izzone (Michigan St.) all put any issues & egos aside and show up as a unified front to defend their home court, show their school pride, be part of the team and defeat the opponent.
This is about the greater University of Portland Pilots, not Pilot Riot, not the Drum Squad and not Purple Pride. This is not about stepping on toes or gracing with an appearance... This is about pride, spirit, showing up, getting rowdy, and as a unified group (the student section along with the rest of the Chiles Center crowd), supporting our school!

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
I have started and stopped my reply to this many times (and taken a 90 minute walk to take away the emotionalism) as I attempt to even comprehend this statement. I, for one, cannot believe you are not at all games, all the time – like the majority of us.socman1026 wrote:So the Villa Drumsquad is thinking of making an appearance to one of the Men's (and Women's) BBall games.
Guess what; most of us actually have to drive a number of miles in crappy weather, including ice in the Columbia Gorge, and then it’s only after leaving work and family responsibilities to make the trek.
I’m assuming because you call yourself Villa Drumsquad, you live on campus and can easily walk to all athletic events on campus. Sorry, it is incomprehensible to me that you are not at all games supporting your fellow students. Maybe it’s my military background (UP AFROTC), but I consider it an obligation to support my student teammates on the athletic fields, just as I would consider it my duty and obligation to support my military teammates on the battlefield. I know, strong stuff, but that’s real life stuff!
I support your desire to make an “appearance,” but I could much more support you being there for your student-teammates 24/7. Just show up, for God's sake, and don't make a big deal out of it!
(I'm sure the "making an appearance" statement was an innocent way of saying we'd like to help support UP Athletics, and I'm also sure that upon reflection I will soften my tone, but that will have to come later).

OK, upon reflection, and based upon your showings at the soccer games, I love the Villa Drumsquad and would like to see you attend as many basketball games as possible to help the home team and be the “sixth man.”DoubleDipper wrote:(I'm sure the "making an appearance" statement was an innocent way of saying we'd like to help support UP Athletics, and I'm also sure that upon reflection I will soften my tone, but that will have to come later).
As it appears organized cheer is what you do best, your biggest test will be against BYU. BYU fans show up with signs and chants that remind some of a big-time football school rally. The Villa Drumsquad will be tested!
Looking forward to hearing the Villa Drumsquad loud and often; the Pilots men’s and women’s teams need you!

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
I would think that tonight would be an important game to have student support at including the Villa Drumsquad.
If the Pilots get this one tonight it adds a little cushion over the four teams below them in the standings. USF, Pepperdine, Santa Clara all have tough games tonight and this would be a good game to get the third win of the conference while those other teams will be handed yet another loss.
So I say bring it loud and bring it often starting with tonight!

Any presence in the student section would help.
I counted warm bodies during the anthem at the last game.
8
I understand school wasn't in session, but when is the last time you saw 8 students at a Duke game ( or even a USF GAME?)

Are you sure about that? Some football songs would song fantastic at a basketball game and would be far better than "DE-FENSE!" etc.

Re: What game would you like to see the Villa Drumsquad show up?
I agree with everyone else, all games!! I think I missed one game while a student (of course it was a Duck game that we won on a last second shot). I do not understand why students do not want to go to all the games. If I had anything less than a 26 hour drive I would be at all the games.
Also, I don't know about anyone else, but it seems a little cocky the way you asked the question, like it is such a great honor for the Villa Drum Squad to grace a basketball game with your attendance.
So yeah, just show up to the basketball games as basketball fans and make as much noise as you can.

You know what I find more insulting to the student athletes? Everyone leaving before the game's over. There were a lot of people leaving last night. I doubt it's most of the people posting here who are bailing early, but I don't know that we should be pointing fingers at students and telling them to "suck it up," either.
I don't think the question from Villa is "should we show up?" because I see them there at games. The question is "should we show up as the drum squad?" I think the answer to that questions is "absolutely."

I don't recall an actual last second shot against Oregon but Adam Quick hit a three that bounced in off the top of the backboard to tie it or take the lead late. Then, to seal it they got two free throws from none other than one J Rochin.
I came late to that one from a concert.
I feel like there's something wrong with me for knowing all that.

And I'm apparently mixing two different memories.... 3 pointer and free throws in that particular game.

If showing up to a game and doing what you do is considered stepping on the toes of a group of bros who show up two minutes before tipoff after drinking all night and can only come up with three chants, one of which is their name and another of which is obscene, then stomp away.

Agreed, not cool to leave your boys early, they are still putting all their effort into the game; we could at least pay them the courtesy of sticking around to cheer their performance; win or lose!PilotDrummer wrote:You know what I find more insulting to the student athletes? I don’t plan to wear my Pilot Riot shirt again this year after listening to the vulgarities from the student section during the USD game. I would expect a lot more from college men, especially at UP. Not cool guys!PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:If showing up to a game and doing what you do is considered stepping on the toes of a group of bros who show up two minutes before tipoff after drinking all night and can only come up with three chants, one of which is their name and another of which is obscene, then stomp away.
