Barker eligible to get a year back?
With Barker still not suiting up if he sits the rest of the season is he eligible to get a year of eligibility back? I forget what the threshhold for # of games played and other rules surrounding applying for a medical hardship.

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
I believe the rule is participation in less than 30 percent of the team's calendar.
I will let you guys do the math
At least Barker can cheer on the Canucks and feel good versus the hopelessness of the Leafs

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
Less than 30% of the scheduled games, and they all have to be in the first half of the season.
So, yeah, if he doesn't step back on the court, he could redshirt.

Go Canucks!
And a Riley RS would be great! We'd have him, John, Thomas and Dorian as sophomore big men next year!

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
To my understanding Riley is eligible to request a medical redshirt if he doesnt play again this season. The way that works is the school files the paperwork with the NCAA and later if the student athlete decides on staying for his fifth year the commitee will rule on his eligibilty. I am pretty confident that is the way it works but as always could be mistaken.

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
So, question... say that he would be cleared to play this week; obviously it would take time to get back into game shape... so, assuming he would want to, should he?
He would probably be back in game shape for February games... is it worth it?!

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
I think this season is kind of shot... Not to be negative but I'd trade a year of 5-th year Riley for half of WCC play's worth of current, rehabbing Riley.

Guys, guys! Let's not get too excited and carried away based upon speculation -- oh, sorry, that's what we do here isn't it!
The real question should be, what does Riley think? And really, that's all it should be.

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
I completely agree. It's possible that Riley wouldn't want to stay for a 5th year even if he had eligibility. But, in lieu of such information, it's fun to speculate on the different situations and weigh the likelihood and benefits of each.DoubleDipper wrote:The real question should be, what does Riley think? OK, this is public knowledge now, so here’s the deal.PurpleGeezer wrote:It's starting to look more and more like they will redshirt Red.
Yes, Riley meets the lack of playing time criteria, BUT he’s only eligible to apply for a Medical Redshirt year IF the doctor says he is unable to play through the rest of the basketball season.
It’s a technical IF, but still a significant IF, because the doctor is currently saying Riley can return to play on February 25 at BYU. THIS COULD CHANGE, but that is the current word from the doctor.
IF the doctor eventually rules that Riley is unable to play due to injury through the end of the season, he can apply for a Medical Redshirt.
Because Riley’s knee keeps swelling too much after his workouts, he’s now shut it down for awhile. Yes, we all know he would not be in “game-shape” and wouldn’t play even if cleared to do so by the doc. BUT, remember, it’s not IF he plays, but IF HE’S CLEARED TO PLAY by the doctor before the end of the season that is the deciding criteria.
It sounds like a no-brainer, but this is the NCAA.

Yes, Eric Waterford had surgery today for a torn meniscus, and is expected to return in time for the tournament, but again, we know he won’t be in game-shape.PurpleGeezer wrote:And I heard Eric had surgery today .
I feel very badly for Eric; he’s a terrific kid with a big heart who just didn’t get the confidence he needed to compete at the highest level this year. If you get a chance to spend some time with him, you should. He’s a the kind of guy that will be a proud UP Alum.

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
Eris has been riddled with injuries over his career... too bad. While he had some difficult times on the court, he has also carried the team at times and has talent. I hope we get the chance to see him play again in Vegas... best wishes on a quick recovery!

That could change when he actually tries to scrimmage. It's a lot more stress than just trying to run, and from watching him walk, that isn't even going all that well.
Did the doctor see him today?

Oh, when you said BYU, I thought you were saying he was going to be cleared to play by 2/4.
Just watching him hobble around last night, no way that could happen.

Re: Barker eligible to get a year back?
I had a real nice heart-to-heart chat with Eric today; what a great young man! Eric fully expects to be ready for tournament play. We talked about being “game ready,” and he said, “What have I got to lose?” Great attitude, I just hope it turns into reality. Even if he can’t significantly contribute, I’d like to see him get one more chance to be out there with “his boys.”PilotNut wrote:Eric has been riddled with injuries over his career... too bad.
