Re: March Madness Thread
Some well played league tournament basketball these last few days on the TV that resulted in some exciting finishes and even a few upsets. Great to see St. Bonaventure win the A-10! Loved the brown uniforms; it looked like five really athletic UPS guys on the court.
It's obvious to me (still) that the best basketball in the US is played somewhere else besides the west. I’ve seen no teams from the west that can compete with the Big East; Big Ten; ACC, etc. that were on the TV this weekend.
But, I do think the three WCC teams can win their first games. 1) We've already seen that SMC can win without the home crowd advantage that WVU will have. 2) GU has traveled enough to not be intimidated by a big arena or a big school like Purdue. 3) BYU will have plenty of fans wherever they go, and Iona isn't the stiffest test they could have faced.
I predict three wins, and some money coming to the collective WCC coffers! Does anyone know how that money is spent? Obviously it’s not on logo designs or center-court logo quality.

Re: March Madness Thread
Play-in games are in Dayton. The winners go to the first weekend sites.
I wouldn't sleep on Iona. They have a pretty good offense when it's on, but it's not always on.
I love the draw Portland got. Wichita State, VCU, Davidson, New Mexico State, Long Beach State, at least five games I can contribute to the Mid-Majority...and no Gonzaga or Washington. Oh yeah, I guess Louisville and Indiana are supposed to be good. I don't really know much about the big conferences (I'm only half kidding here).

Re: March Madness Thread
I agree with PPT; Portland got a great draw, the crowd support will be interesting to see since the teams are from Southern California, New Mexico(x2), North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia and Kansas. Could the Rose Garden be a welcome home for the underdogs or support the more well-known schools?
In other Postseason Tournament news, Washington, Oregon and Stanford make the NIT playing Texas-Arlington, LSU and Cleveland State, respectively; LMU hosts Cal State Fullerton in the CIT Wednesday.
San Francisco hosts Washington State in the CBI first round Wednesday, while Oregon State hosts first-time postseason team Western Illinois from the Summit League.
WCC gets 5 teams in the Postseason again; last year, the WCC had GU, SMC, USF, SCU and UP play after Vegas.
This season UP went 1-19 against 14 postseason qualifiers: Georgia St, UW, LMU, USF, GU, SMC, BYU, WSU, UCSB, UK, St. Louis, Ohio, Montana, Nevada; the lone win came against Georgia State in the second game of the season.

I'm guessing that stacks up pretty well against other schools, but as DJ is on spring break, I'll leave to him to check.

I almost shed a tear when I heard UW didn't make the dance. Stay strong guys, sometimes life just isn't fair.

Same here. Plus, I think there are Oregon and Oregon State fans who don't feel much better about UW than WSU fans.PilotNut wrote:NoPoNeighbor wrote:what does everyone have against UW?

I thought Iona had a good chance there; their points/possession is 5th in the nation. Now they're up 4 with 4:00 to go. Going to be a good finish there.PilotNut wrote:My goodness... Iona is crushing BYU, 49-24, 6 min to go in the first half...
The first game was exciting, too. Western Kentucky made up a 15-point deficit in the last 7 minutes to beat Mississippi Valley State 59-58.

I professed to being for the underdog at the start fo the BYU/Iona game, but all of a sudden BYU was the underdog, and they were battling for WCC pride.PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:Two big comeback wins tonight. Would've been fun to be there.
Good win Cougars, keep it up!
As far as being there; naw, my leather chair in front of the fire watching the plasma, was better than being in Dayton, although ...........

It has something to do with frames per second when taping, or something like that. Kind of like when you see tapes of TV screens, or as Geez will remember, the spokes in the wagon wheels going backwards when watching Hopalong Cassidy episodes.

Cool! A science lesson!!
I remember those stagecoach wheels going backwards, though I was a Cisco kid guy, myself. Bill Boyd didn't do it for me. ( trivia quizz-what what Cisco's horse's name? Bonus points for the name of his sidekick's horse.)
The light board probably flashes on and off at something like 60 times per second and the YouTube video is 24 FPS.
There is a nice YouTube video of two pinwheels spinning in the same direction. At the right speeds, the pinwheels appear to go in reverse or change color.

Re: March Madness Thread
Umm, I doubt there are really enough old people on PN to know that Cisco's horse was The Devil or as Cisco called him, Diablo. Now Pancho had the real horse, the Crazy One, or as he was known, Loco.PurpleGeezer wrote:Cool! A science lesson!!

Hopalong Cassidy, Howdy Doody, and Mr. Wizard? Clearly you two have had a little fun with the WABAC Machine!
Back to the postseason, already in progress, LMU knocks off Cal State Fullerton 88-79, the school's first post-season win since 1990, giving the WCC five teams with 20 wins this season for the first time.
Cal rallied with 41 2nd half points to make the final score closer than it looked as they lose 65-54 to South Florida.
Oregon State beat first-time post-season entrant Western Illinois, 80-59.
Idaho beat UCSB 86-83 and Utah State beat Cal St. Bakersfield 75-69
