Pacific Rejoining WCC
BREAKING NEWS:
All indications are that the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California will be returning to its WCC roots in all sports beginning with the 2013-14 season.
There’s a news conference scheduled for today at 1pm in Stockton to announce the move.
Apparently Pacific, with an enrollment of 5300 students on the Stockton campus, felt the WCC was a better fit academically, geographically, and financially than their current conference, the Big West.
Pacific was a member of the West Coast Athletic Conference, now WCC, from 1952-1971

The fit is pretty perfect and who doesn't want to make a little Stockton road trip at take in the sights of the local Applebees, In n Out and the rest of the vast cultural experiences that town provides....
No but seriously, Stockton makes Spokane look like Camelot... It is really THAT bad.

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
Agreed, I support this addition... and having a 10th team. Pacific should be a net gain for the conference in the medium to long term... they have been down the past couple seasons, but have shown that they can be a solid team.
My first thought is how this will effect the Basketball tourneys... I assume that it will mean 2 play in games the first day, 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9, to advance to play 5 & 6 on the 2nd day.
I really would love Seattle U to be in position to rejoin the conference some day (they are not right now). Maybe if/when BYU leaves, SU will be ready...
This is more than just a basketball decision. The having a 10th team for the non-men's basketball sports will be a good thing shceduling wise. As the BCS conferences make additional pacts to schedule with each other (like the Pac 12 & Big 10 agreement), it will be more difficult for the non-BCS conferences to schedule quality OOC opponents...

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
They are a good fit, as a small Methodist school. Much better with us than all the state schools in the Big West. Pair up well to give No. California four schools, too.
Note the BYU centric vibe in this report: Pacific on verge of joining BYU. What's the betting line that BYU will still be a member of the WCC in 2013-14?

Depends on if the Big East needs a 20th team to balance things out.up7587 wrote:Note the BYU centric vibe in this report: Pacific on verge of joining BYU. What's the betting line that BYU will still be a member of the WCC in 2013-14?

No, but they have Football, Women's Lacrosse, and Men's and Women's wrestling as varsity sports.

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
For Pacific, it is a "momentous" move.
Here's an exerpt of an article at:

By joining the WCC, Pacific will be aligned with like-sized, private universities that share similar academic standards, have religious-based origins and are grouped geographically. Best of all for area sports fans, the Tigers will welcome men's basketball stalwarts Gonzaga University and Brigham Young University each year to Stockton and rekindle rivalries with Santa Clara University, the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary's College. Even the other universities in the WCC - the University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and the University of Portland - are more attractive opponents than most in the Big West.
Stockton is an event-oriented city, and when Gonzaga and BYU come to town, it will be an event. When Big West teams such as California State University, Northridge, or University of California, Riverside, come to town, with all due respect, not many fans seem to care. Gonzaga and BYU have long been regular participants in the NCAA Tournament. WCC members Saint Mary's and San Diego have had tournament success, and the Bay Area universities will draw fans who remember the good ol' days and new fans will get caught up as those rivalries redevelop.
Pacific will receive more NCAA men's basketball tournament revenue as a member of the WCC, which regularly has multiple entrants, unlike the "one-bid" Big West. And the Tigers will receive more exposure as a member of the WCC, which has a television contract with ESPN and is working to secure deals with regional cable operators.
Joining the WCC is the shot in the arm Pacific athletics desperately needs, as the program has struggled across the board in recent years, with the exception of softball, which won its first Big West title last season, and fan interest has waned.

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
Not really news, but the WCC announced today that Pacific is adding three sports when it comes into the conference.
They announced the addition of Men's Soccer starting in 2014 and the addition of two women's sports, Sand Volleyball and women's outdoor track.

Just so I know... Do they wear bikinis in sand volleyball?

Um, not really. Sand Volleyball was just introduced to NCAA D-1 athletics last year. As you can see (or not) the uniforms are relatively conservative....but nice beachwear nonetheless.Geezaldinho wrote:Just so I know... Do they wear bikinis in sand volleyball?
I don't know about the men's uniforms, Geez.

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
From NBC New (edited):
Good graduation rate; it's my recollection that at least 12 members of the squad this year are JC transfers....and two more next year....an interestng way to sustain a program.
Verlin has served as recruiting coordinator and has apparently focused on academic efforts, helping the team to its 96 percent graduation rate during Thomason’s quarter-century tenure.Pacific named Ron Verlin, a 19-year assistant at the school, the program’s next head coach.
Verlin replaces Bob Thomason, who retired after 25 seasons as the head coach of the Tigers. He is a native of the area, graduating from Sacramento State in 1990 and spending time as an assistant coach at Nevada and at Columbia (Calif.) College in Sonora prior to moving on to Stockton.
The program will enter the West Coast Conference next season after spending the past 42 years in the Big West Conference.
(According to sources), Verlin was already handling a majority of the recruiting this season, getting commitments from four prospects, two out of high school and two from junior colleges.
At a program like Pacific, it’s best to have a person familiar with the program, and it’s tough to beat an assistant who has been there for almost two decades. Verlin has been a part of four of Pacific’s Big West tournament titles and six of their regular season championships.
The Tigers finished 22-13 overall and 13-5 in conference play, winning the Big West tournament and falling to Miami in the second (first?) round of the NCAA Tournament.

Finally, today is the day....Pacific rejoins the WCC after a 42 year absence. The video shows some very nice facilities and lots of banners and ORANGE!

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
Senior (he will graduate in August) guard Aaron Short is leaving the program and will probably be eligible immediately at another D1 school that doesn't care about student/athletes going to class......
According to NBC Sports, Coach Ron Verlin said he had no issues with Short's on-court performance, but he wanted a greater commitment from Short regarding being on time and not missing class as a senior and he didn’t get it.
“He’s a great kid and absolutely, he could have stayed here,” Verlin said. “But I can’t change my core values for one player and I’m going to hold you to a high standard because you’re supposed to be a leader as a senior. How can I count on you when the chips are down, when you can’t do the little things I ask of you?”
The earlier transfer of senior Spencer Llewellyn and now the transfer of senior Short after the graduation of 7 seven seniors at the end of this last season leaves UOP with only 4 players from last year's roster......3 sophomores and 1 senior JUCO transfer in his second year at UOP.
A great opportunity for incoming players.....

Re: Pacific Rejoining WCC
UOP really had only one need after the graduation of 6-10/250 Brazilian forward Gabriel Aquirre, and today they got him.....but he'll have to sit out an entire season.
Williams, 6-8/195, played in every game for Long Beach St. last season, and the coaches say he's now looking a bit bigger than his listed weight.Alex Kline
@TheRecruitScoop Long Beach State transfer Jack Williams has signed with Pacific, the school announces.
