I believe Legs has found a veteran assistant he has known since his college days to come in once the contractual stuff is worked out.

"Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the meal," is close to what Legs once said about having more than three assistants on his staff.

Also, with the budget constraints the university is facing, it makes more sense to pay three assistants a fair salary than splitting the budgeted allocation among more than three.

Ben Johnson was announced as an assistant at Northern Arizona yesterday.

The life of a basketball coach is not an easy one, but it has to be tougher on the family that must pull up stakes and move so often.

Certainly not as bad as it is for military families who are uprooted every couple of years and whose parent is often deployed and in harm's way...but still.

Coach Legans has a new assistant coach, and he is a man Legs played for at Fresno St.

Arturo Ormond comes to UP after two seasons as the associate head coach at EWU and has extensive coaching experience at all levels of basketball, including coaching stints at six D1 universities.

He was an assistant to Rodney Terry at UTEP for two seasons prior to joining the EWU staff and was instrumental in recruiting my guy Souley Boum away from USF. Ormond has served as an assistant coach at Fresno State (2002-2005), D3 Centenary College (1999-2002), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1997-1999), University of Texas-Pan American (1995-1997) and Tuskegee University (1994-1995).

Ormond began his coaching career as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Farragut High School (1993-1994) in Chicago, and served as varsity boys basketball head coach at Edison High School in Fresno, Calif., for five years (2006-2010).

Besides coaching at the collegiate and high school levels, Ormond has substantial experience in the Grassroots AAU Basketball world.

Ormond was a two-year letterwinner at Texas-Pan American (now UT Rio Grande Valley) during the 1989-90, 1991-91 seasons. He graduated from Texas-Pan American with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 1991 and a master’s degree in education in 1993.

Coach Legans told me, “you guys are going to love Arturo.”

Also, "We are very fortunate to have Arturo join our staff...he is great at developing players and is well-connected in the recruiting world. Arturo brings a different level of experience to our staff and will be a great asset for our program.”

Job Posting:

Graduate Assistant – University of Portland

I am told Coach Legans would also like to bring in a fourth assistant, preferably with Australian ties.

I noticed all the top teams in WCC have an army of assistants. Bennett had six guys in matching outfits sitting on the bench between him and the players tonight.

Former UP Assistant (1994-99) Jim Shaw is on the move again, this time landing the Associate Head Coach position at Stanford.

(Jim was interviewed for the UP Head Coach position prior to Shantay Legans being hired).

Interesting that his first endorsements are from my least favorite coach, Rex Walters and from the close runner-up, Wyoming head coach, Jeff Linder.

All the best to Wicks...his name alone ought to bring a smile and a few good recruits to Green Bay.
Now, with Coach Jeff Linder leaving Wyoming to assist at Texas Tech, Sundance Wicks is back in Laramie as the head coach after one year at Green Bay where he led the Phoenix to a winning season (18-14) after the team going 3-29 the previous year under the previous coach.

Just like players, the coaches are on a merry-go-round. With Linder going to Texas Tech, Sundance Wicks left Green Bay after one year to return to Wyoming as the head coach.

Green Bay has made a strange move, hiring sports talking guy Doug Gottlieb as their new coach. Gottlieb has almost zero coaching experience; he was an assistant coach for one year at Golden West College while he was sitting out his redshirt year before transferring to Oklahoma St. He has been a radio broadcaster since 2002 for ESP, CBS Sports and Fox Sports.

Even more strange, supposedly he will continue to host his daily radio show while he is coaching. I think he is underestimating the time required to be a college head coach.

Doug Gottlieb is an impressive person. He was almost hired by Green Bay last year; he was a finalist for another D1 job. His father was a coach, his brother is an assistant on the women's team ar GCU--who we may yet see at the Chile's center. Doug has some idea of what he is getting into. BTW, his radio program is thoughtful and mostly interesting. And he did play point guard for Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. Set records for assists in the lower level professional ball he played.

I applaud Green Bay for the courage of their choice. They may prove wrong, but itt is not as strange arguably as hiring  an NBA vet, at least if competence and work ethics are factors.

The DBO would be considered a "countable coach," if he or she were sent on the road to recruit.

At GU, for instance, there are four assistant coaches and one assistant coach - DBO

As an aside, to help schools maintain their roster sizes in the wake of NIL and free agency, schools and recruits are now allowed an unlimited number of recruiting visits.
