Derek Mandell - Olympic Bound! (Again)

UPXC alum Derek Mandell (class of 2008), who represented Guam at the 2008 Olympics in the 800m, has been selected again in the same event and will compete in London! I heard it from the man himself. Just thought you guys would be interested.

Thats fantastic! A PR in Beijing and now the chance to do it again in London? (I really need to look at qualifying for the Irish National Ski Team....)

I have always thought about trying to qualify for the Irish Olympic Track Team... I mean, there certainly wouldnt be much competition...

I doubt you could beat John Treacy or Eamon Coghlan, and those guys are in their 60's.

If you're wondering, the first round of the 800 is Monday morning. I don't see the start lists posted but the first heat is at 2:50 am, right as some of you are getting home for the evening.

Heat 1, and there's an American in it with him so he's a near lock to get on TV.

UP grad Derek Mandell, running for Guam, was last in his preliminary heat and did not advance.

But, he did represent UP and Guam in the Olympic Games....how cool is that!!
