New Dons Logo
So, I guess USF decided it was time to change the brand up a little bit... http://www.usfdons.com/

Re: New Dons Logo
Is it just me or does it look MORE like the other USF logo now....
I get that the old logo with the sword was horribly 90s, and I like that it looks a little more classic (I'm a sucker for retro designs.) But when you have a school with the SAME acronym with the SAME colors, you'd think a little more differentiation would be necessary.

Ah, but according to the USF website:
But apparently not located in Florida. The previous logo was created nearly two decades ago. The new design freshens the logo, and represents the University of San Francisco as it is today—dynamic, contemporary, and relevant.

Re: New Dons Logo
The SF stacked inside of the U is pretty goofy, in my opinion. It just doesn't look like an athletic logo. The word marks are better, especially the version with the Golden Gate Bridge images: http://www.usfdons.com/sports/2012/8/13/GEN_0813123234.aspx?id=132

Agree 100%... If they really wanted to distinguish from the Floridian counterpart, it seems incorporating the bridge design into the primary logo would make a little more sense, giving it a local flair rather than the vanilla corporate logo they are using makes WAY more sense.

Hmm...
A look in the mirror might be in order...

We have virtually the same concept as another team in the conference. And we went away from the "local flair" idea.
Now we have nothing to show that our mascot doesn't fly airplanes.

Re: New Dons Logo
I agree completely. The stylized 'P' is going to feel dated in a few short years. Logos for universities and athletic teams should not be re-done every decade to fit with the design fad du jour. The Pilots' classic logo with the script font in front of the ship's steering wheel was excellent.Geezaldinho wrote:A look in the mirror might be in order...

Of course, that wasn't copyright-able.
I understand the need for a trademark, but the wavy line through the P just isn't enough connection to Pilots or Portland.

Re: New Dons Logo
Oh I look in that mirror frequently and still loathe our precious corporate "P." It's boring, generic and really has nothing "portland" or "pilot" about it... Unless you believe that whole "river flowing through the text" hogwash the designer came up with.
I don't know, the boat wheel, an anchor, a tug... SOMETHING. Alas I think we are all singing in the same choir here. (I just have having to distinguish the fact that I didn't go to school in Maine every single day... Not that an anchor would really fix that problem.)

Re: New Dons Logo
Well that or just have a picture of Fred Armisen...
Can we just go back to being the Columbia Cliffdwellers already?

Re: New Dons Logo
I like the Cliffdwellers. But, if I had my way, I would just make our logo and old-school cursive P. There is no need to update that logo and most colleges logos don't have ANYTHING to do with locality. A majority of college logos are just simply block or cursive letters.
I would go with one of these P's:

Hahaha that P on the lower photo looks strikingly similar to this:
As much as Vitamin R reminds me of home, piggybacking a defunct seattle company hardly seems aspirational...

Re: New Dons Logo
With or without a new logo, USF has reloaded and will contend....according to CBSSports:

Unitus vs. USF
I saw a billboard for Unitus Credit Union here in the Portland the other day and realized why the new USF logo seems so bland and corporate:
Unitus:
USF:

Re: New Dons Logo
Over on the Don's board they have gone through all the stages of grief about the new logo and are now clamoring for where they can buy the full line of Nike stuff....
