Re: SMC under NCAA Investigation
Hmm, could it be the Australia "connection?" USA Today didn't have much more to say than ESPN, but St. Mary's did confirm to them there was an investigation underway.PilotNut wrote:Uh oh... I say wait and see what comes of this, but where there is smoke there is often fire...

If anything is to be found, I honestly hope it is not consequential. St. Mary's is a great school with a wonderful basketball program that somehow does very well with the crappiest facilities in West Coast D-1."Saint Mary's College and the NCAA have been working cooperatively on a matter related to the men's basketball program," Michael McAlpin, Saint Mary's director of media relations wrote in an email to USA TODAY Sports on Friday afternoon. "To respect the integrity of that process, the College will have no further comment at this time."

Re: SMC under NCAA Investigation
CBSSports has also picked up on the story alluding to ESPN's report and commenting on former assistant David Patrick.
This David Patrick connection the Australian players has been commented on and speculated about many times over the past four or five years.
I have all the respect in world for Randy Bennett. He had back surgery in June, but this is probably more painful.

From CBSSports:
Katz's report also makes note of a man named David Patrick, a former assistant at the school now at LSU. He left SMC in 2010, opting to take a job with the Houston Rockets, according to the report. He was eventually suspended for a year after breaking contact rules during last year's NBA lockout.
Saint Mary's has become a legitimate power in the West Coast Conference under Bennett, who has passed on other job opportunities to keep building the Gaels' program. The team has won 25 or more games the past five seasons and made four NCAA tournaments under Bennett. He has taken a liking to bringing in Australian players such as Olympian Matthew Dellavedova and current NBA player Patty Mills, who was recruited by Patrick.
