I am glad that UP rules here. I am not glad all the numbers are so small. Still a niche sport, but at least we have found as great niche.

I noticed that BYU is averaging higher attendance than UP this year, though it is very close, 3351 to 3313. Since BYU has at least one more tournament game, it could still change.

The 4 #1 seeds are:
2
5
8
28
in attendance?!??!
If I got the math right.
If I was an elite soccer player I would want to go to school that had some fans.

I'm not sure where those numbers came from. I believe the correct numbers through the first round of the NCAA tournament are Portland 3312, BYU 3255. Tonight's attendance at BYU is reported as 2317, so our margin after today should be greater.
(I am familiar with these numbers because I track, and report on at BigSoccer, all Division I attendance as one of my projects.)
Re: Portland, BYU and Texas Tech lead at gate
Using the statistics on the two team's websites,
Looking at BYU's website, their attendance through the Auburn game is 41,374 for 13 home dates, or just under 3,183 per game to date.
we closed out our season at 43,064 for 13 dates , or 3312.61 per game.
For them to get above our 3,312.61 average attendance if their season ended with Marquette, they would need to surpass 5,002 for that game.
If they get past Marquette and host UNC (presumably) they would need to average above 4,158 for the next two games.
They got 4,922 for the Penn State game in September, so I guess it's possible, but it was sunny and warm then. I saw snow mounds around the field on TV today. And they had all summer to market the PSU game.
And for total attendance, of course, they need to get 1,690 more fans in the seats. I'm betting they do that.

Re: Portland, BYU and Texas Tech lead at gate
Penn State has good student support for sports but there are several good teams to chose to watch. Women's volleyball is very good and drwas big crowds. Luckily they play away this weekend so that will not be a competition for students. Mens and Womens Ice Hockey is a new D1 sport to draw the students. Then there is always (the other football) , which can help draw crowds with some fans coming the night before a game. PSU plays Indiana at home tomorrow and that might help for Friday and possibly Sunday.

The BYU number came from here - http://byucougars.com/stats/w-soccerUPSoccerFanatic wrote:gxm wrote:I noticed that BYU is averaging higher attendance than UP this year, though it is very close, 3351 to 3313. Since BYU has at least one more tournament game, it could still change.

However, it appears that the average attendance number wasn't updated after the Utah State game.

Have we definitely closed out the season? If, for example, Rutgers knocks off UVA and Duke, wouldn't that put us in a position to host a quarterfinal?Geezaldinho wrote:we closed out our season at 43,064 for 13 dates , or 3312.61 per game.

Re: Portland, BYU and Texas Tech lead at gate
The announcers for the BYU game announced attendance of 3,193.
So for them to surpass UP's average attendance, they need 5,123 for the UNC match.

The BYU ticket information indicates that a season reserved ticket can be had for $40. But at least they charge something.

Attendance for BYU's last home game is 4291.
They win attendance total with more games.
UP keeps the average attendance title for another year.

I came across this today in reference to the fact that the city of Portland has three of the top 40 best attended soccer teams in the country. Now that's for professional (or at least semi-professional) teams. If you look at the UP women's soccer team, they are more highly attended than all but 33 professional clubs. They also outdraw half of the top-tier WPSL. Only ten second- or third-division men's clubs outdraw us.
Proud to be a Pilot.

I noticed also that the Torns also outdrew Chivas and are within a few hundred in attendance of three other MLS clubs. They are only 172 per game less than the Earthquakes.
