UNLV @ Pilots Tuesday 12/4 @ 8PM on ESPNU
Apparently PN regulars are not the only ones who enjoy Las Vegas; UNLV’s game at Portland is the team’s FIRST road game of the season. The Runnin’ Rebels average over 15,000 fans per game, so it may seem a bit like a morgue for them in front of 1,200 fans in the Chiles Center.
UNLV is 5-1, including a very impressive victory over Iowa State, but a disappointing loss to Oregon.
KenPom ranks UNLV at #20 in the nation while Sagarin has them at #30. KenPom still has UP ranked #230 and Sagarin ranks UP #278….a fairly wide disparity, but I have to think Sagarin is closer based upon what we’ve seen of UP to this point.
We know that Anthony Bennett (19 ppg) and Portland native Mike Moser (12 ppg/9rpg) are the stars of the team and the players that get the most ink, but there are any number of UNLV players who could light-up the Pilots tomorrow night. It seems regardless of how much we might scout another team, the Pilots always seem to make some other opposing player an All-America for an evening.
UNLV by 24 would seem reasonable if Coach Rice plays his bench……but the Pilots are defending their home turf, so we can always hope the game is closer or even competitive.

Yeah, Sagarin's likely more accurate at this point. The only thing that saved the Pilots from a freefall in the Pomeroy rankings was the late 13-1 run by the Pilots with the Wazzu starters off that turned it from a 24-point deficit into a 12-point loss...thereby identifying quite the flaw in Pomeroy's rankings if final point spread is indeed a major factor in his computer rankings.
At least following tomorrow and Kentucky there's three winnable games coming up on the schedule.

Just spoke to someone who should know.....Bryce Pressley, who suffered a concussion at WSU, will not be available on Tuesday against UNLV.
He is "hoping" to make the trip to Rupp Arena....."a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Is UP promoting this game at all? I have not seen/heard any advertising/buzz/articles/mentions of this game anywhere. We are playing at top 25 team and home and the athletic department makes no effort to advertise?
So, is there any reason to expect more than 1,200 fans? Or any reason to expect more than the 30-40 students who have shown up for the last couple of home games?

I guess it's all a matter of where you look. I've seen very large multi-color advertisements on the front pages of the Oregonian and Columbian sports sections and I've seen a number of TV ads, all pointing to the UNLV game.NoPoNeighbor wrote:Is UP promoting this game at all? I commented to someone just yesterday how the marketing department seems to be going all out to advertise the UNLV game.....

Thought I'd share a website I look at from time-to-time (I'd look at it more often if I truly understood everything it has to offer ).
It really gives the full spectrum look at the strength and weaknesses of teams and individuals.
You'll note that regardless of the great disparity between UP and UNLV, the current odds are only 13 in UNLV's favor.

RealTimeRPI isn't so sanguine. They have UNLV by 21.

You don't want to see what they have for the one after.

Oh good! Thanks for setting me straight, DD. Hope the ads will translate into more fans tomorrow night (and preferably fans cheering for the Pilots!).DoubleDipper wrote:I guess it's all a matter of where you look. Dear god...well, if I was a betting man I'd throw my money on the Pilots to keep it to within 59!

Looks like Portland native Mike Moser might not be able to play for UNLV tonight due to injury, defeating the purpose of UNLV scheduleing this as a homecoming game for him:

Dang, that’s too bad. Moser’s numbers are so similar to Ryan’s, I was hoping to see a bit of a matchup knowing how neither will back down and Ryan won’t give up the home court edge.

Saw Wally on campus today carrying a sign that read, Game tonight 8 pm.....Free food for Students
The sign included a picture of a pizza......sounds enticing to me; I’m quite sure there is beer in the dorm rooms!

Found a sports bar here with DirecTV - which is nothing short of unreal considering it's illegal in this country!
Giving 'er a test run tonight.

Well, hard to be mad at THAT effort.

Agreed! I will be the first to admit that I have have been down on the program recently... but performances like tonight do give me hope! Who knows how this game would have gone had we not been in such foul trouble. (I won't comment on my thoughts on that topic, for fear of triggering the cuss sensor).
The team came out with great energy, played strong defense, and managed to control much of the game, even when shots werent falling.
Kudos, also to the students and crowd tonight! Well done!
Now, lets hope we can consistently bring this level of play at home and on the road!!

The Pilots gave a great effort, I only wish the three men in the stripped shirts also would have given the game their best. I am not one to gripe but that was the worst officiating job I think I have ever seen. I feel bad the boys had to go up against eight on the court tonight.

AHHHHHHHHHH You've got to make your layups, to paraphrase the Schonz. No really, great effort from everyone on the team tonight. Loved it except for the final score. It's good to watch a close game with a big, fired up crowd.
