Ha ha, good prediction there, Dean; CSUB did beat La Verne this evening about 6 hours after your post.
Their 4-6 record now includes two wins over non-D-1 opponents...just the same as the Pilots.

Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a geographically diverse a roster than that of CSUB. Ten states and thee countries are represented, and 14 of the players on the 18 man roster are transfer students from other universities or community colleges. With seven seniors and five juniors CSUB is an experienced group.
Just looking at the stats it would appear the Roadrunners are a guard oriented team, but with enough size to score inside too. The two top scorers on the team average 12 points per game and shoot the 3-ball with a greater than 40% success rate.
CSUB’s top scorer, #44, is a 6’3” guard averaging 14 points per game, but he's had games of 22, 20, and 20, and he gets by far the most free throw attempts on the team…I’m guessing he takes it to the rim…a lot!
Their roster shows a number of very large and tall inside players, but the only player to get any real playing time is #21 at 6’8”/235…he averages 6 rebounds and 8 point per game.
My guess is CSUB will be a pretty wild, street-ball kind of team with lots of physical play, and the Pilots will have to either go wild with them and test their own athleticism, or attempt to play a ball-control half court oriented offense. My guess is the Pilots will attempt the latter and end up being caught up in the former.
All the “expert” pundits rate this game a toss-up base upon the Pilots home court advantage….I hope they have one!
Regardless, it should be good.

Tried to sneak that past everyone...was wondering if I'd get away with it!
Decent outings for CSUB their last two times out, today's thumping over La Verne notwithstanding. Away win over Fullerton which required them to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and a six-point road loss to a good South Dakota State team.
DD mentioned that only four of their 18 players aren't transfers...one of those is a freshman walk-on right from Bakersfield and is seeing significant playing time already - http://www.bakersfieldcalifornian.com/sports/college/x1012271268/Roadrunner-walk-on-hits-ground-running

Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
Did anyone else happen to notice? Oskars has now filled in at point guard in the waning minutes vs. UK and PBC.
Still not a great ball handler during his adjustment to the speed and athleticism of D-1 ball, he may have the best overall court vision on the team. He’s been plagued a bit by turnovers off his passes, but I think it’s just a matter of time before he and his teammates arrive on the same page at the same time.
We’ll have to see how the wins and losses stack up as we progress into WCC play, but I’m pretty sure Derrick has peaked in his offensive performance, and the team slows way down when he’s at the one; so we may see more of Oskars while we await the arrival of Muggsy Bogues coached Alec next fall.
I don’t mean to diminish the job that David is doing at the PG position, but he still seems like a fill-in to me. At least he’s steady, but there’s not a lot of offensive threat to divert the defenders from KB and Rhino.

I think Carr can still grow into the PG position more. I've been impressed by his ability to run the fast break and get to the basket, but he's just missing too many easy shots.
Meanwhile, Rienfelds has made some GREAT assists in the last two games. Let's hope he continues to get more comfortable running the offense.

To expand on Rev's tweet, CSU Bakersfield averages the 12th most fouls per game in the NCAA (21.9).....But the Pilots aren't much better. 38th most at 20.7 per game.

So, what your saying is we should plan on getting home a little late from tonight's game....
Yea, as I said in a previous post, CSUB loves to play street-ball and streak** all over the court batting and swatting.
**Just so you know, it will be OK to bring women and children to the game. I did NOT mean streak as in the '60's & 70's fad of streaking naked sense (I beleive there was even a Streaker's Olympics at Notre Dame in the early '70's, but someone else on this board will have to comment on that sign of the times.)

Nothing to do with the next three games, but you'll note the Sunday game in Las Vegas, whether it be the 6 or 8:30 game, will be televised on CBS College Sports....my DVR is set to Comcast Ch. 725 in the Portland area.

This is what I get for poking fun of you over the Caldwell incident.
First ever REGULAR SEASON tournament for them...who'd have thought they would make a postseason tourney as an independent? Again, good for them (seriously this time).

Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
Well the pre-game predictions held up with the Pilots going to the line 37 times (I think?).
Some weird hijinks at the end with CSUB walking off the floor following the Nicholas FTs after he got tied up with the Roadrunner player. Anyone see what exactly went down there? My wireless was pooping out for the entirety of the second half.
Crawling back towards .500 mark. North Florida got hammered by Colorado State tonight.

I know Ryan's shirt got pulled big time when he was going up (for a rebound, I believe) though I'm sure that isn't the full extent of what happened and it had likely been building up all game. It was very out of character for him which leads me to believe it was likely well deserved. He had another quietly brilliant night tonight. I love what he brings to this team.DeanMurdoch wrote:Some weird hijinks at the end with CSUB walking off the floor following the Nicholas FTs after he got tied up with the Roadrunner player. Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
The flagrant foul was appropriate. The CSUB player (#44?) didnt just lightly pull on Nicholas' jersey--he had a full on grip of the back of Ryan's jersey and was trying to pull him down (out of frustration for the board Nicholas just grabbed). It was not a light or accidental tug--it was intentional and appropriately called.
It got a little interesting when the Pilots surrounded Nicholas to make sure it didn't escalate, and for a second I think he thought it was the other team, but he quickly calmed down and was laughing with Rev by the time he walked to the other end of the floor.
I'm not sure what the CSUB coach was protesting--it all happened right in front of him.

I was sitting about four rows up from press row, and the conversation between the Bakersfield coach and the ref happened right in front of me:
Coach: "What's the call, ref? What's the call?"
Ref: "Flagrant 1."
Coach: "Come on, look at it. Just look at it for me."
Ref: (Looks at the replay) "Yep, it was a flagrant."
Coach: (Walks to midcourt)
Ref: "No coach, you can't look at it. You asked me to look at it."
Coach: "Just let me look at it."
Ref: "No." (Walks away)
Favorite moment of the night.

Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
What a defensive performance tonight--we dominated. Did we set a record for blocked shots tonight?!
Only 10 turnovers... a great improvement, especially when facing that much pressure.
If we hit a couple 3's, and make more free throws , this game would have been over much sooner.
I liked the energy on the floor all night, and hope we can bring it again on Wednesday. I feel better about this team and our prospects than I did a few weeks ago (but that's not saying much! ).

I forget the exact wording, but he used the word obvious in there somewhere.

Ryan got grabbed from behind by the jersey as CSUB was trying to foul. He was not very happy about that but the rest of the team surrounded him and got him away quickly. I didn't see him retaliate. He might have said something but who wouldn't have? Flagrant 1, two shots and the ball, easy and 100% correct call. Not sure what the Roadrunners didn't like about it since it seemed cut and dried to me.

I like that they finally got a decent screen for the refs to review plays from. That little 6" box they were using was ridiculous.

You're right - and it was.
I was really pleased with how Carr, Rodgers, Bailey & Co. were able to consistently break CSUB's press. That's something we could see a lot of against some of the more athletic teams in the WCC (e.g. LMU and Gonzaga), and tonight was a great demonstration of how to get it done.
I also really liked seeing Thomas be a little more assertive offensively. If we can't knock down any shots from the outside, we're really going to need the type of interior play that Thomas and Ryan provided tonight, along with Kevin Bailey's trademark slashes.

Yes, and it was a HD flat screen....I'm just guessing what they had before was an old oscilloscope left over when the engineering building was remodeled. I am glad the refs at least acted on the Coach Barnes request to look at the F-1….they are supposed to be kinder and friendly this year, but as to some of their calls……….
I’m going to give the Roadrunners coach a pass on his pulling his team from the court with 18 seconds to go….something I didn’t do at the time it happened as I rained boos on him and told him to catch a bus to Bakersfield.
In retrospect, I think it was just his way of acknowledging the game was out of reach and the team had to catch a flight to Ft. Collins…..well, maybe Denver. Regardless, it didn’t look good to anyone. I had a chance to speak with Bill Johnson after the game, and he too had never seen that done at a Pilots game

Re: Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield (Monday, Dec. 17 @ 7:00)
Difference makers tonight besides the obvious: Bryce Pressley, David Carr, and Riley Barker.
Bryce came into the game at a critical junction, just as CSUB was closing to within 6, and through his steady and athletic play righted the ship and the Pilots pulled away. (Man, he and KB together looked marvelous).
David worked so, so hard tonight and was so gassed at the end of the game he could hardly reach the rim with his free-throw attempts, AND he only turned to ball over once against a team the wins by forcing turnovers.
Riley was an absolute animal in the first half, and after his third block he was gasping so badly (he’s asthmatic) Rev told him to stay in the defensive end of the court during a breakaway.
BTW, as we hung around after the game, David and Thomas came out and practiced free-throws…good for them).
