Pilots @ Pepperdine Saturday @ 7pm (No TV)
Thursday Pepperdine suffered to similar fate to that of Portland’s; after posting their best record in non-conference play since the 2004-05 campaign, Pepperdine (8-6, 0-1) couldn't keep up with the 10th ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs down the stretch.......and eventually lost 78-62.
In a slow start to the scoring, Pepperdine grabbed a 14-6 edge almost eight minutes into the contest, and trailed by only four to start the second half. Then Pepperdine got quick scores from Jan Maehlen and Caleb Willis to draw even at 30-30. They then took a brief 36-35 edge following a Stacy Davis layup, but Gonzaga responded with eight straight points. Pepperdine put together several short rallies, but Gonzaga continued to counter, and the Bulldogs built a double-digit cushion the Waves could not overcome.
It’s obvious the Pilot are going to have to play smothering, ball-hawking defense against the turnover prone Waves, then attempt to convert the turnovers into points.
I’m not going to go into all the statistics, except to point out that PU has three players averaging in double-figures, but still only scores about 63 points per game, the same number they give up to their opponents.
I’m confident the Pilots can have fewer turnovers and get more rebounds than PU, but can they get more points off of the turnovers, and can they convert their free throws and can they score more points…..that’s the concern---scoring.
One statistic that jumps out that probably shouldn’t surprise me...even after their Gonzaga contest, the Waves are only averaging 996 fans per game….UP is averaging 1359!
Ken Pomeroy predicts #210 PU 62, #235 UP 57 with a 70% probability.
RealTimeRPI is even more in favor of PU, 73-61.
Game time is 7:00 pm, and it's advertised as being streamed live on WCC Digital at WCCSports.com. (I have no idea if that is a subscription or free feed through the WCC….maybe we can get a report on its quality and ease of use from someone who has used it before.)

The links to all WCC tv/video, Gametrackers, audio, etc. are conveniently located in the upper right hand column of every page on PN. On the upper right of each page, in the margin, there is the list of "WCC Links"... underneath that is "WCC Scoreboard". If you click on that, it will take you to constantly updated schedule of WCC action, with scores, links, etc. for ALL sports. You can even sort by date (current/futre/past) and specific sport.

Of course, I have to live with the comments about 'Riley Baker'.

Apparently the "Portland Waves" are playing tonight...
The video stream quality is quite good, with replays, multiple angles, etc... you may just want to keep a finger near the mute button.
Oskars having a great first half, and sparked our run to get the lead, after the team started 0-9 from the field. Oskars is 4-4 from the field, 2-2 from 3. Nicholas is cold from the field again (0-3), so we need to get him hitting again.
I will take a 28-21 lead, with as awful as we started; thankfully Pepp was almost as bad.
Defensive intensity looks good, and the offense is much more fluid tonight... looking good so far. But I am not seeing the Pepp team that has done well so far this season...?

Sorry, that's on me. I tuned in late, just in time to see the first basket after six minutes. Been OK ever since.

Crap. Dumb turnovers along the sideline, and the lead is down to 5. Now Carr is hurt.

12 point lead gone, tie game. Another bad turnover leads to a break and a 3pt.

Re: Pilots @ Pepperdine Saturday @ 7pm (No TV)
Oh man... lets hope Carr is okay...
It is amazing how we can just go from firing on all cylinders to awful, careless play instantly. Let's go Pilots!

Wow, what a lot of missed opportunities. I wonder who Coach wants to be taking the shots?

Re: Pilots @ Pepperdine Saturday @ 7pm (No TV)
Wow. Have the guy pinned on the end line, let him drive to the hoop and score. Then throw away a pass, and foul them. Missed free throw. Fumbled rebound.
Too bad. Haven't learn how to win when the other teams ups the pressure.

Our end of game execution is unbelievable. And not in a good way.
Why do we struggle with finishing shots so much?!

I feel like we consistently play 30 minutes of good basketball... However, the game is 40 minutes long.

Re: Pilots @ Pepperdine Saturday @ 7pm (No TV)
At the 13:16 mark, we had the lead at 39-27 with Tanner's dunk. From that point on, we were outscored 27-8... I don't even want to count how many turnovers we had in that stretch, and missed shots at the rim, and how bad we were out-rebounded to close out the game.
This was an awful collapse. Add Carr's injury, and this night was a total disaster.

During the last two games I've turned off the TV/video stream with 10 minutes go....I'm afraid it's really the best way to enjoy the Pilots games right now.An_Undergrad wrote:I feel like we consistently play 30 minutes of good basketball... However, the game is 40 minutes long.
I didn't see Carr's injury....what happened?

If only we'd played as well as we did against Montana State, we could have won these last two games.

David works so hard every day, it would be a shame if he were laid up for awhile. Yep, prayers!oldtimer wrote:Revision- I am saying prayers for David and his knee, that didn’t look good.
On a more positive note, I spent some time with KB today; he wanted to wait until the season was over to have surgery on his nose, but it was just too busted up to allow him to breathe properly….and on top of that, the mask he received just didn’t fit right. So between the busted nose and the mask, he just wasn’t able to get a comfortable amount of air to play.
I kidded him about the Pilots winning without him in Las Vegas…..but he still plans to be fit and ready to play against next Saturday against LMU.

Waves Complete Second Half Comeback to Knock off Pilots
Shorthanded Pilots suffer another injury as David Carr goes down in the second half
MALIBU, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots led by 12 points midway through the second half, but the host Pepperdine Waves used a 21-4 run to escape with a 54-47 West Coast Conference victory Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Pilots (7-10, 0-2 WCC) lost more than just the lead during the game-deciding run as sophomore guard David Carr went down with a right knee injury at the 9:54 mark of the second half with the Pilots leading 39-34. Carr had to be helped off the court and did not return to the game. Portland also missed second leading scorer Kevin Bailey for the second straight game with a broken nose.
A Ryan Nicholas jumper with 6:46 remaining that gave the Pilots a 43-41 lead, but that would be the last field goal Portland would make on the night.
Ahead 28-21 at the half, the Pilots came out of the locker room and pushed the margin to 35-23 following a Korey Thieleke fast break dunk and Carr three-pointer. Tanner Riley also got free for a breakaway dunk to make it 39-27 Portland, but the Waves (9-6, 1-1) then got a big spark from their bench in the form of walk-on freshman guard Austin Mills.
Mills, who did not appear in the first half and has played just 46 minutes this season, went on a personal 7-0 run that ignited the decisive Waves rally. Jordan Baker’s layup with 4:50 remaining gave Pepperdine just their second lead of the night at 45-43. A jumper by Stacy Davis pushed the margin to 48-43, but Pilot freshman Bryce Pressley had a tip-in to bring it back to a one possession game with 1:32 left.
Pepperdine freshman Jett Raines made a driving layup to make it 50-45 and the teams traded free throws in the final minute for the final margin.
Freshman guard Oskars Reinfelds scored a team-high 11 points for Portland, including 10 in the first half. Senior guard Derrick Rodgers added 10 points, while leading scorer Ryan Nicholas finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Pilots held Pepperdine to 36 percent shooting from the field for the game and outrebounding the Waves by a 43-38 margin. Portland shot just 33 percent from the field and committed 15 turnovers which led to a 17-8 deficit in points off of turnovers.
Davis paced the Waves with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Baker added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Portland will take a week break from action before returning to Southern California to face the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the new WCC Digital Package at WCCSports.com and on the radio with a 30-minute pregame show on True Talk 800 AM.
