Re: WCC Tourney: #8 Pilots vs. #9 Lions, Wednesday, 6pm
I have to say I am highly disappointed that we are playing in the Wednesday game again this year... but here we are, so lets make lemonade and win this sucker.
The Pilots have been playing better of late, but LMU has not folded up shop on the season. They will be hungry for some success, for sure.
As Anthony Ireland goes, so go the Lions. If we can keep him in check, I feel pretty good.... but if he gets hot, watch out. It looks like we will be without Oskars again.
Hey, at least I can GUARANTY that we will not be playing on Wednesday next year!!

Hmm, it would seem you're allowing your banking deals with Guaranty to creep into your guarantee....PilotNut wrote:Hey, at least I can GUARANTY that we will not be playing on Wednesday next year!!
But yes, no Wednesday game will be a huge positive change....regardless of which school is playing!

Wonder if Reveno will bring up the fact that the Pilots are slight underdogs for tonight's game according to, well, pretty much any predictor site/oddsmaker out there (including KenPom).
Not sure how they're underdogs given a 2-0 record against LMU, but whatever.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but are we watching the final game of the Reveno era here?

Re: WCC Tourney: #8 Pilots vs. #9 Lions, Wednesday, 6pm
I know this is just a reaction on an emotional level, that it is hard to beat a team three times in a season, and that UP has had numerous injuries this year, and maybe I'm just tired of the Gonzaga fans rubbing their No. 1 ranking in my face for the past week, but UP just looked fairly awful in giving LMU its first win in 15 games...Fire Everyone. Now.
Edit: 19 turnovers. Wow. I don't care if you have a seventh-grader playing point guard, that's just completely unacceptable.

Man, we looked absolutely awful and confused tonight. Against the 1-15 team, and had lost 14 in a row.
This is a horrible performance and loss tonight. Wow.
I know several were in garbage time, but 19 turnovers in a tourney game? So many were unforced, too... I am speechless that we would have this poor of a performance under Reveno in his 7th season. Where were the adjustments? We just seemed to be chunking up ugly 3's when not turning it over.
Very disappointing.

Re: WCC Tourney: #8 Pilots vs. #9 Lions, Wednesday, 6pm
The last 3 years results in post-season/tournament play:
2011: First round loss as #5 seed vs. #8 LMU. Lose on the road @ Hawaii in the CBI.
2012: As #8 seed, beat #9 & winless SCU by 4 points in the play-in game, and then lose by 21 points to #5 USF.
2013: As #8 seed, lose to #9 seed by 11.
Where is the progress? Is this success that we should be happy with? Honestly, I would like to hear Reveno defend this record for when the team should be playing their best...

Pilots Rally Late Before Falling to LMU at WCC Championships
LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- The University of Portland Pilots rallied to cut a late 11 point deficit to three points, but ran out of gas in the final minute as the Loyola Marymount University Lions prevailed 65-54 in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships at the Orleans Arena. The Pilots finish the season at 11-21, while LMU improves to 9-22 and advances to face San Francisco in the second round.
Sophomore guard Kevin Bailey led all scorers with 21 points and shot a blistering 8-of-11 from the field, while junior forward Ryan Nicholas nearly recorded a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. The loss marks the final career game for Pilots senior point guard Derrick Rodgers.
Portland shot 43 percent overall and outrebounded LMU 31-30, but turnovers proved the difference as the Pilots committed 19 turnovers to 11 for the Lions. LMU outscored Portland 22-6 in points off of turnovers.
LMU maintained a slim advantage throughout the first half until a jumper by Bailey put the Pilots ahead for the first time at 27-26 with 4:20 remaining in the half. The Lions came right back and took a 34-30 lead into the locker room despite Portland shooting a solid 53 percent for the half.
Clinging to a 41-39 lead with 14 minutes left in the second half, the Lions went on a 13-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a commanding 54-43 lead with less than seven minutes remaining. Portland stormed back and cut the lead to three with 1:58 remaining as Bailey and Nicholas combined for nine points, but clutch baskets by Ashley Hamilton and Godwin Okonji put the game out of reach.
Sophomore center Thomas van der Mars scored eight points, while freshman guard Bryce Pressley tallied five.
For the Lions, Hamilton had 21 point and eight boards, while Anthony Ireland was the only other player in double figures with 12.

Free throws...Make 70% and it would have been a 55-55 game instead of 55-52. Would that have changed the strategy/outcome....who knows.

Yup. Sitting close to the court, it was FTs and TOs that were the obvious failures. I did not see chunking up threes until it was desperation time; they continued to work their offense most of the game. But a couple LMU players were lights out on threes to begin the game, and they used quick hands to poke the ball away from Thomas and others several times. But the unforced turnovers, many from the primary ball handler, were the downfall.
