I got an email this morning saying I had a new private message. However when I go to my Private Messages, there is no new message.

Hmm, let me know if it continues. That happened to me a while back, and I never figured it out. Is it possible it is a delayed notification of a somewhat recently-received message? scratch

The most benign thing i can think of is someone sent you a message, then deleted it before you looked at it.

You would still get the notice.
