Re: A Time of Firsts
Named after Francis Xavier, one of the founding Jesuits, not Francis of Asissi.
Us feeds are getting that wrong. I'm getting the scoop from the Argentina news.

Re: A Time of Firsts
Yeah, I just saw that on the news, too, with a picture of him holding up a jersey.
He's sticking with the Saint thing.
Also, he took the 56 colectivo ( bus) to work.

Re: A Time of Firsts
Another saint approves.
Maradona is proud for the country.
And La Presidenta Kristina de Kirchner will attend his first mass.
This could be a little touchy for the folks who have barricaded themselves into the National Cathedral because religious schools are getting federal aid.

Re: A Time of Firsts
For those in need of a translation... It says: "Who was the joker who put in this vote." At least, that is what my Spanish has taught me.

^ love it.
The last non-European pope was Gregory III of Syria (732-741)
He barred the eating of Horse meat.
Uh Oh. i wonder what Wendy's thinks...
He's also the guy who asked Charles (the Hammer) Martel to get the saracens out of France and Spain and save him from the Lombards.
Only took 700 years.

Re: A Time of Firsts
Just checking on which Francis... . From what I found, it's uncertain which saint name he is taking. A vatican spokesperson apparently said it's up to the new Pope to clarify. Do the Argentinians know something specific?

Argentina canal 5 interviewed his assistant, who has been with him 25 years.
Now I know stuff the Cardinals don't.
You won't find that on BS either.

That's why I asked here...if anyone would be on top of this, you would. NBC national and local news reporters need to talk to the Argentinians.

it'll be too late by the time he explains it.
He'll probably say Xavier, Asissi, Mule, and all the other Fransisco's who ever lived.

Re: A Time of Firsts
La Nación, the biggest paper in Argentina, had Cardinal Bergoglio as the front runner, contrary to the rest of the world, which had Cardinal Scola of Argentina as one of the favorites.
This was from the ealy edition, which came out way before the announcement.

Re: A Time of Firsts
Some tidbits.
In an interview with the rector of the Metropolitan cathedral of Buenos Aires, he said his holiness considered José I as his choice for his Papal name.
before he left, friends gave him new shoes because his old ones were ratty.
(the Pope gets nifty ruby slippers, just like Dorothy's).
He is the only Cardinal that arrived at the Vatican on foot.
He had a small carryon bag as his only suitcase.
He can throw that clothes out, too.

Re: A Time of Firsts
CA San Lorenzo is Playing up the link with Francisco. They sent him this shirt with his name in place of the sponsor,
And then they put his likeness on Their jerseys for a match against Colón.
It must have worked. They won 1-0 on an almost comical last minute Colón header own goal off a corner.
