Bad call on the corner kick leading to the Stanford goal. Frisbie booted it off the back of Stanford player, should have been goal kick..

Re: Stanford
This is going to be a really fun season. BTW, my live feed, which was about 30 minutes behind, ended abruptly when the game was actually over. I think Stanford didn't want to have us watch the carnage.
Congrats to Stanford on their live feed. I never saw anybody do so much with a 14.4K modem.

Re: Stanford
It sounded like a great game on Twitter which was my only option. I just checked the Pac12 website, they have the OSU vs Texas highlights so hopefully they will have the Pilots vs Stanford highlights eventually. If they do show them eventually I hope they are better than the OSU ones. The video is 1:39 long and the first 47 seconds are of the announcers talking to each other about the result and then actual highlights that are all OSU defense, no OSU shots, including the lone goal, were shown.

Re: Stanford
you didn't miss much on the Stanford feed. it was an embarrassment to the second richest school on the planet situated in the middle of Silicon Valley.
the funniest part was when it cut out altogether when the game ended, even though the feed was about 15 minutes behind.

Re: Stanford
What a great result for the Pilots! Let's be honest here: who really thought that this team, starting three freshmen and with a heavily reshaped defense, would go on the road to #2 team and end up even after 120 minutes. I'm very impressed. I'm going to be traveling for a week or so and will be looking for some detailed reports from next weekends games. Go Pilots!

Re: Stanford
If I'm reading the box score correctly, freshman had about 408 player-minutes (that's a bit above 33%), with 5 UP frosh on the field during both overtimes.

Re: Stanford
Being honest, I thought they had a good chance in this game. I've had this feeling for a while, along with the Geez's, that this is going to be a really fun season. The attitude and commitment and skills of the returning players, with the new frosh added in, looks like it's going to make a great recipe.Harry Redknapp wrote:What a great result for the Pilots! Re: Stanford
Well, the live stream was ... interesting. Many starts and stops ... it ended before the OT periods began, so I didn't see the end of the game. Oh well...
That said, what I saw of the Pilots impressed me. It seemed the game was 3 different games. The first 30, the Pilots dominated with a lot of ball and player movement. Stanford looked out of sorts for much of that first 30. The second 30 was pretty evenly matched with both teams moving the ball up the field and having opportunities. A couple of times Stanford was lucky to only be down 1-0. The third 30, Stanford dominated possession. I missed Stanford's goal, but thought the Pilots looked pretty good on defense for the most part. They had a couple of breaks, but overall they held their shape and covered well. Frisbee did a good job on some of Stanford's tougher players. And Dees made some nice saves.
The biggest positive I took away was the team is still getting use to each other, but look like they have a lot of upside. Now if they can find a couple of people to finish...

Got this quote from the Stanford Soccer site: " The shot came in the run of play, with Portland playing excelling in a Stanford-style possession game."
Just wondered when we started playing a "Stanford-style possession game"?

Re: Stanford
I saw that also. First of all the statement is very presumptuous and second of all it is poorly written. Between the online broadcast and the Gostanford write up their presentation has been very second class. UP has a first rate broadcast and a first rate website to report their results. I guess most at Stanford are big picture types that don't muddle in the details. Hah....

Re: Stanford
I wouldn't get too harsh with them. Just a couple of years ago they wouldn't show any broadcasts at all, for fear other teams would scout them. At least they are moving forward.pilotfan87 wrote:I saw that also. First of all the statement is very presumptuous and second of all it is poorly written. And even though we see the possession game as something we started and they copied, neither team can be seen as originators. Just for the record, we have done it a lot longer. They are comrades in style, which makes watching those games fun. Much better than a big12 team just trying to beat the crap out of us.
And the reference is actually about as big a compliment as they could have paid.

Re: Stanford
Well, I've been watching them at practice the last couple of weeks, and from what I saw, I thought we could compete. I even told that to a few of you.Harry Redknapp wrote:What a great result for the Pilots! Garrett was much more concerned about what we had to do than about how to defend against them. The last time, he harped on containing them keeping the ball in the back to keep some composure, and not necessarily getting into trouble by forcing the attacking third. I got the idea he didn't think we had the horses to match up with them.
This time his focus on getting our people in position to compete head to head ( Frisbie to counter their speedy forwards , for the most obvious example) and working the passing lanes.
They worked really hard on that, starting with three touches, then two touches, then really more like first touch passing. Each time got quicker, too.
Lots of talk about how to show for The ball, how to have an idea where the ball is going before you even get it, that sort of stuff. It was more how to cause them trouble than how to back each other when bad stuff happened.
The first couple weeks was all defence. Last week was possession passing. I expect soon we will actually work on the final third. When we do, watch out! This group has the makings of a great team.

Wait, that's a little unfair.....back in the '60s most of our classes were not in the classroom, but outdoors:up7587 wrote:Sounds like that's a pretty low bar!Geezaldinho wrote:Sure!
