Local Dining
Hello My Pilots Friends,
Yes, a Zag here, but I do cheer for the Pilots most of the time and in many sports.
Bringing a friend with me to the game Thursday and would like to eat and maybe drink a bit, before the game.
Any suggestions near campus?
Our wounded and sick Zags have actually played better since the injuries and illnesses. Should be fun Thursday night.

Re: Local Dining
We welcome your business at our local eating and drinking establishments.
My favorite options around campus (mostly on N Lombard): The T-Room (think Jack & Dan's), University Grill, Tom's Pizza & Pub, McMenamins St. Johns Pub and Breakside Brewery on NE Dekum (further away, but great food & beverage... allow plenty/extra time, you may have to wait for a table at this small-ish spot).
Has anyone tried the Seven Rivers BBQ on Lombard near Green Zebra grocery? Also, I have heard that The Fishwife is decent (surprisingly!)... anyone tried it?

Re: Local Dining
Thanks Pilotnut. A former Pilot soccer girl also suggested St. John Pub and I found Nicola's too.
Thanks for taking time to reply and suggestions.

You can also eat in the Chiles Center before the game if you want. They have a pasta dinner, and beer and wine are available.

Most sadly, Nicola's has been closed. Tom's Pizza is great. King Burrito is top notch Mexican food, though they do not have adult beverages that I can recall. It ain't a fancy restaurant. I have heard good things about Sundown Pub on Lombard.
Park off campus if you want to leave within an hour of the game ending.

Thanks for the replys. I do appreciate it.
Say it ain't so, Nicola's is gone. Ouch.
Chiles might be the call. Simple. One stop.
Good luck with the Mary's tonight. Your big can take Waldo and your guards match up pretty well. LeVeque is a load.

Re: Local Dining
The T-Room is the traditional pregame hangout bar (for young and old alike). The Zags always come strong to the game and sadly also come strong to the T-Room pre-game if your looking for comrades.

Other options very close to campus, both on Lombard:
Cha Cha Cha (sit-down Mexican place, plenty of margaritas and cervesas)
East Side Deli (good sandwiches, lots of beers available)

Re: Local Dining
Thanks again everyone for all your replies. I am impressed and pleased to see such gracious input for an old Zag.
This game really brings out some strange Zag fans, not all well behaved.
I promise to be on my best behavior at your place.
Sorry about last night. Sounded like you had a chance but just couldn't quite finish it. Opportunity missed.

Re: Local Dining
Hmm, yea we've certainly noticed an increase in poor GU fan behavior as the quality of the GU program has increased over the last 10 years, or so....an interesting correlation.HRZag wrote:This game really brings out some strange Zag fans, not all well behaved.
It's been a smart move to schedule the GU @ UP game mid-week instead of the traditional Saturday night we once saw, as it has sharply cut the number of inebriated GU student incidents....including some serious injuries.
Most GU fans who visit the Chiles Center are respectful and will engage in good humored banter....but it only takes a few BAD GU "fans" to sour one's outlook toward anyone in red and blue....this has really been apparent in Las Vegas the last couple of years where the police have been called on a number of occasions to quell bad behavior by red and blue glad fans.
Welcome to North Portland and the Chiles Center, HRZag, we look forward to a competitive game...on the basketball court.

Tom's is my bar of choice in North Portland. It sits between I-5 and campus, so it's on your way.
After having multiple friends work at Seven's BBQ, I have vowed never to give them my business. Staff was treated atrociously and it wasn't subtle. Perhaps that has changed but I won't be finding out any time soon.

Re: Local Dining
Gotta love Pilot Nation! The game is tomorrow and there is no thread about the actual game, but we do have a thread about where to eat and drink before the game. I will be eating my pregame pasta and enjoying a beer on the mezzanine.
For after the game, I'd suggest Plew's Brews in St. Johns. They have a great selection of beer. They don't really serve food, but if you hang around long enough, someone will offer you some of those special oregano brownies.

Priorities, I guess, but it could be those who have started the game threads in the past are looking for someone else to pick up the ball and have a turnaround effect on UP's recent losing ways.blacksheep wrote:Gotta love Pilot Nation! Ha-ha, yea you gotta love those oregano brownies....sometime starting this spring or early summer you'll be able to get all the brownies you want here in Washington....I'm told.

Yeah, I'm a disappointing 2-2 this year on the game threads. Might try one on the upcoming road trip to see if I can help recapture some of the magic from last season!

Re: Local Dining
Hey PilotNation, you guys are probably still giddy.
I endured a humbling thrashing at your Pilots hands. Great win for your program. Cherish the moment. Your kids played brilliantly and surely deserve the win.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. Ended up at the T-Room. Great food and service, met a couple of new Zags too.
Good luck on the road Pilots, it can be tough out there.

Thanks. We are acutely aware of the hazards on the road, as surely the Zags are now, too.
