I knew Pepp was young... but check that out! They are having a great year in relation to expectations (inconsistent, but look at those wins), and they start 2 Freshmen, 1 Sophmore and 2 Juniors. Impressive... I would have gladly taken those results when we were such a young team!
This may be one of the best games of the year... lets hope we come out with energy and purpose!

I'd like to say that Marty Wilson will be a runaway choice for WCC Coach of the Year, but there appears to be an undefeated team out of Spokane this season.
You're right, this has the makings of a tremendous basketball game tomorrow night. Really could go either way and it should be a dandy.

Re: Pepperdine @ Pilots, 2/12 (7:00)
Marty Wilson has been my favorite coach (except Rev, of course) since he took over a few years ago.
I don't think the fact that Coach Wilson is a PU grad can be underestimated when it comes to the great commitment and school spirit he (and his wife) bring to the team. Coach Wilson played on some very good PU teams in the late '80's, and he's bringing that respectability and recognition back to Malibu.
It's not like he was a newcomer to coaching when he took over, I think he spent over 20 years as an assistant in California including stints at UCSB, USD, and PU before being named the head coach.

Re: Pepperdine @ Pilots, 2/12 (7:00)
I am looking forward to the game tomorrow night. We led for most of the game in Malibu. I am hoping the momentum from last week and having everyone playing healthy we can string together a few wins to end the year.
I expect this to be a lower scoring game. Pepperdine leads the league in defense. Will Bryce stay hot and hit his three's to open up the inside. Really need to the bigs to finish strong.
They also attempt and make a lot of free throws per game. They outscored us by 8 on the free throw line in Malibu. Can Voldy stay on the court and not get in foul trouble against Davis? Don't expect much offense from Voldy, but his defense and rebounding ability are huge.

It's nice to be excited about a WCC game in February! I've checked out around this time the last couple years (shame on me, I know), but I'm pretty excited for this one. It sure would be nice to get a W tonight!!

Attendance at Thursday night games is always problematic. I have spoken to a number of alums/season ticket holders who have said, "with kids, school, work, etc., Thursday game are just too difficult to get to."ShipstadPilot11 wrote:It's nice to be excited about a WCC game in February! I don't think it should be the coach's job to recruit students to attend the games, but I am glad that Rev is doing his part. I seriously hope that someone in the athletic department is doing something other than just posting Twitter and Instagram messages in order to get students to turn out tonight.DoubleDipper wrote:At least Coach Reveno is attempting to get some students to the game:http://instagram.com/p/y_DO4Loj7H/Coach Rev wrote:Hey students! Re: Pepperdine @ Pilots, 2/12 (7:00)
yes. YES!!!! This is the Pilot team I have been waiting for this year. In spite of being cold from the perimeter, we were able to feed the bigs and run, and play very solid defense that forced Pepp to chunk up a lot of late shot clock attempts.
Bailey looked good in the second half, Jason Todd had some GREAT passes, Alec played smart, and Bryce was all over the place (in a good way!).
The team is playing confidently, and did not let Pepp back in the game when they cut the lead to 6 or so points with about 7:30 to go.
Great job, Pilots! Lets pay back LMU with a thorough pasting on Saturday night!

Re: Pepperdine @ Pilots, 2/12 (7:00)
Loved the way the Pilots stuffed the Waves on defense and then got out and ran.....not just the guards, but the wings and the bigs too.
Spacing is not often mentioned, but after the embarrassment of the USF game, the Pilots are much improved at breaking presses and traps without a lot of difficulty because of excellent spacing and solid second and third passes.
Yes, there were more turnovers than usual, but PU is a very good defensive team and KB was really struggling in the first half...I think he had something like 5 of the 10 (or so) first half turnovers.
Excellent fan and student turn out tonight. Maybe winning does help bring out the fans.
Of note was the genuine fan reaction when PU's #0 went down in front of the Pilots bench...I think we all immediately thought of David or Riley when they went down with knees. When the PU and UP trainer and the UP orthopedic surgeon took him to the locker room I think we immediately thought the worst, but after the game I saw #0, Amadi Udenyi, was on crutches with ice on his foot or heel....not on his knee.

Portland Defense Stifles Pepperdine for Third Straight Win

PORTLAND¸Ore. – All five Portland starters reached double figures and the Pilots held Pepperdine to 24 second half points in a 69-52 West Coast Conference win Thursday night at the Chiles Center. It marked the third straight game that the Pilots held an opponent under 60 points, all Pilot victories.
Sophomore point guard Alec Wintering finished with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals to lead the Pilots (15-10, 6-7 WCC). Senior guard Kevin Bailey had 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots.
Senior center Thomas van der Mars had 12 points, while senior forward Volodymyr Gerun and junior guard Bryce Pressley added 10 each.
The Waves (15-10, 8-6) were led by junior forward Stacy Davis with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but he committed six turnovers. Sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi added 14 points, but had to be carried off the court with a lower leg injury in the closing minutes.
The teams traded leads four times in the opening minutes before Portland held the Waves scoreless for a 4-minute, 32-second stretch and took an 18-12 lead on a Pressley layup. The Pilots would lead by as much as seven in the first half, but a Davis layup with 29 seconds left made it 30-28 at the break.
Portland never relinquished the leader after halftime and used a 10-2 run capped by a Jason Todd three-pointer to gain a 52-40 advantage. Back-to-back threes from Udenyi cut the deficit to six, but the Pilots answered with a 7-0 run and would lead by as much as 19 points late in regulation.
The Pilots shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and held Pepperdine to 32 percent in the period. For the game, Portland shot 51 percent and the Waves finished at 36 percent.
Defense has been key to Portland’s three-game winning streak, which began with road wins at San Francisco (69-57) and Santa Clara (74-54) last week. All three opponents were held to 36 percent shooting from the field. Portland also outrebounded all three teams by double digits.
On Thursday, the Pilots controlled the glass with a 39-26 rebounding edge and 36-24 margin in points in the paint.
Portland will look to continue the win streak when the Loyola Marymount Lions (8-18, 4-10) visit the Chiles Center on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. LMU dropped an 80-51 decision at Gonzaga on Thursday night, but defeated the Pilots 80-68 in Los Angeles on Jan. 15.
The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports NW with Tom Glasgow and Jack Sikma calling the action. All Portland games are on the radio on Sports 910 (KMTT) with pregame coverage starting 30 minutes prior to tip-off. Tickets start at $10 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors.

Really short bench tonight, Jason Todd for 27 minutes and Bobby Sharp for 9 minutes. 35 minutes each for Bryce and Alec. Hope they have some legs left for LMU; sounds like the Lions took the night off in Spokane down 20-0 to start the game, no scoring first 8 minutes .

Great team win! When was the last time we had 5 players in double figures? Really nice to see us close out an opponent decisively. We made our lay-ups tonight! That sure goes a long way, and tonight it made up for poor 3-point shooting. Bryce, Kevin, Alec, VDM... everyone was making the inside shots that they should be expected to make. I've been duly impressed with the solid TEAM play and balanced offense over the last three games.
Points for improvement:
Too many ill-advised/poorly executed passes to the post (especially by Bailey), leading to many turnovers.
Despite the good student turnout, the student section was almost lifeless throughout the game. The one exception being when free t-shirts were tossed to the crowd. I don't get it. Seems like everyone would have so much more fun if they were cheering, chanting, standing and stomping. I propose a pre-season summit next year with Pilots fans, student leaders, and the athletic department to brainstorm strategies to make the game-day atmosphere better and help the team get more wins.

I'd like to think he won't need surgery because that introduces scar tissue which will always give him some problems in the future....but I'm sure he'll want to rehab and get back in the game as soon as possible.
