Already just 332nd out of 351 D1 teams in bench usage, the Gaels appear to have concerns about Naar's ankle for this one...he has been nursing a sprain for quite some time and may again get limited minutes (only 11 for him in the double OT win over USD last Saturday).

Re: Pilots @ St. Mary's, 2/19 (8:00)
As stated before, this SMC team is one of the toughest, most physical teams in the conference, so it's going to be up to the Pilots to do all the normal things really, really well to beat them. Turnovers, missed free-throws, and poor inside shooting can hurt, but I believe the biggest challenge will be to control the boards.
If the Pilots can get out and run against the Gaels short bench and senior laden lineup and pull down rebounds at both ends they have a good chance of an upset. St. Mary's will be looking for its 20th win of the season....I think it would be much better if they achieve that milestone against Gonzaga on Saturday.
I'm bringing two Pilots fans to the game....I hope there will be a few more alums and team family members behind the bench where the Pilots will hear us.

Big opportunity for the Pilots tonight to extend the win streak to 5 games. Starting to come together as a team. The Pilots need to take advantage of their bench tonight. I think will see some more minutes from Philipp in guarding Waldow. Hopefully this will be his breakout game!

Re: Pilots @ St. Mary's, 2/19 (8:00)
Pilots shooting poorly so far, and SMC hitting a high percentage of their 3's. Not a good recipe.
Update:
Well, the Pilot shooting picked up substantially to end the half at 48%, and SMC started missing 3s, finishing 3 of 10 for the half. They had been 3 of 6 and missed their last 4.
Cut down on the TOs (6 at half) and keep playing smart, and this will be a game.

Waldow has to sit with two fouls. St Mary's goes on an 18-7 run with him on the bench.

Re: Pilots @ St. Mary's, 2/19 (8:00)
~7 minute scoring drought. That is not going to cut it.
Interesting that Rev sat KB, Pressley and van der Mars for a chunk of the 2nd half when we were struggling to score? Granted, the starters weren't scoring, but sitting those guys removes a lot of scoring options.

17 point final, so that run was the game. Again.
During the run, Kevin missed 3 shots, a FT, and made a TO.
Jason T missed 2 shots.
Voldy missed 2 layups and fouled Kerry Carter.

First and only points from the bench came from D'Marques with 2 minutes to play. Have to have something from the subs.

Good coaches make adjustments. We went 9 consecutive plays trying to get the ball into our bigs, telegraphing the play before it happened, and then settling for contested jumpers with the clock winding down. We're predictable, stagnant, and soft. Our coaches don't have an answer for the elite coaches in our conference. We have guards in Pressley, Bailey, Wintering, Tyson and Todd that can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket, possibly draw fouls and change the pace of the game. Run a freaking play for the guards. Get our bigs out of the freaking lanes so that when one of the guards drive the other teams big isn't sitting in there waiting for them. Tonight's game was simple. Bennett made 2nd half adjustments. We continue to do the same thing. I feel bad for Van Der Mars and Bailey that this is how their senior year is going to end. 4 years of terrible coaching and very little success. More than any other players, those two had great options coming into college and chose UP. I wonder if they had it to do all over again would they. I hope their non-basketball experience at UP was worth it because what they got for coaching has been awful.

Gaels Erupt in Second Half to Snap Portland Win Streak
On the Web: http://portlandpilots.com/news/2015/2/20/MBB_0220152001.aspx
MORAGA, Calif. – Portland senior center Thomas van der Mars recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the Saint Mary’s Gaels used a big second half for a 68-51 West Coast Conference men’s basketball victory Thursday night at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels (20-6, 12-3 WCC) used an 18-0 run midway through the second period and outscored Portland 38-23 after the break to pull away. Saint Mary’s shot 64 percent in the second half and 54 percent overall for the game, snapping the Pilots streak of holding opponents under 40 percent at four games.
Senior guard Kerry Carter scored a game-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, while senior guard Aaron Bright scored all 14 of his points in the second half. Senior center Brad Waldow added 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Pilots (16-11, 7-8 ) had their four-game win streak snapped with the loss, but remain alone in fifth place in the WCC standings. Seniors Volodymyr Gerun and Kevin Bailey joined van der Mars in double figures with 10 points apiece.
After Portland cut the deficit to 42-41 with 14:53 remaining, the Carter hit back-to-back threes and Bright finished at the rim to cap the 18-0 run. Portland point guard Alec Wintering snapped a 6-minute, 57-second scoreless spell with a steal and layup, but the Pilots would get no closer than 15 points down the stretch.
The 51 points scored marked the second lowest of the season for the Pilots, who shot 40 percent from the field and 3-for-11 from three-point range. The Gaels drilled 8-of-21 from beyond the arch.
Portland trailed 27-15 early on, but closed the first half with a 13-3 run and trailed 30-28 at the break.
The Pilots will conclude their brief road trip at Pacific on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be streamed live on TheW.tv and radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on Sports 910 (KMTT).

That four-game win streak the Pilots were just on must have just killed you....nothing for you to come on here and complain about for darn near a month.

Cool story, bud. See you on here after the next loss.
PS Aren't you the same guy who bashed the recruitment of "another shoot first, undersized point guard" named Alec Wintering?
