Before the beginning of last season's play Coach Crouch brought in a transfer from Oregon State, Hannah Troutman, who made a world of difference in the performance of the team, and this year he's done it again....

The  team will be adding UNLV transfer, 6-1 Reghan Pukis to the roster.

The Pilots "only" lost one senior to graduation this year, OH Emily Liger, but I think most know Emily was the star of the team, and it will take a huge effort on the part of her teammates to make up for her loss.

Maybe the addition of Pukis, originally from Tacoma, will go a long way in filling that void.  She too is an OH and is apparently quite a weapon on offense in addition to being a "versatile pin attacker who hits with range and power on both the left and right, and is going to be a fantastic beach player for our new sand program," said Coach Crouch.

Reghan will be immediately eligible as a sophomore and have three years of eligibility at UP.

Welcome Reghan!

After a disappointing 1-3 season-opening loss to Seattle U in Corvallis, the Pilots came back (literally!) in a big way to beat Oregon State in Corvallis in 5 sets, after falling behind 0-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-Cool! Congrats to the Pilots! Next up is Utah State today at 4pm to close out the tournament.

It has been a very good 2 days for the WCC vs. Pac-12. SCU knocked off #7 USC (In the Galen Center!), USD beat Stanford at Jenny Craig and Gonzaga beat Utah in Utah! LMU faces UCLA tonight at Gersten, and then UCLA travels to Pacific on Thursday. Let's keep up the sweep!

The Pilots first home matches will be in the "Portland Tournament" on Friday 9/9 at 5:30pm vs Cal St Bakersfield and Saturday 9/10, 10am vs Texas State and later that evening vs. Utah at 6pm.

No one commented on this? Pilots Leave Starkville with Trophy

That puts the VB team at 7-5 heading into conference play.

The turnaround in the volleyball program is still amazing... while USF was very young, inexperienced and with a new coach, the Pilots absolutely dominated this match to improve to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in WCC play.

Per Adam Linnman on the broadcast and per the UP site: "The Pilots are currently ninth in the nation and first in the WCC in both in aces per set (1.91) and total aces (103)". This was before last nights match, and those numbers only improved.

Next up: SCU at Chiles, 1pm Saturday. Streaming provided via TheW.tv. Granted this is the lighter part of the WCC schedule, but have the Pilots ever been 3-1 in WCC play in anyone's memory?!! GO PILOTS!

The Pilots VB program continues its strong results this season with a sweep of SCU and USF in the Bay Area this weekend!  The sweep gives the Pilots their first ever 2-match WCC road sweep since joining the WCC for VB in 1989!

On Thursday, the Pilots beat SCU 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24) at The Leavey Center...  on Saturday the Pilots won a 5 set thriller at USF (28-30, 17-25, 25-23, 25-11, 15-12).  This is the 4th time the Pilots have come back from an 0-2 deficit to win a match so far this season.

With the 2 wins, the Pilots are 6-5 in WCC play, tied for 4th place!  This is truly an amazing turnaround by Coach Brent Crouch.  Next up: Pepperdine visits Chiles Center Thursday night, 7pm first serve. LMU visits on Saturday at 1pm.

7-5 and sole possession of 4th place! In Coach Crouch's 2nd year! This is incredible, when you consider the state of the program he inherited.

The Pilots face a tough & important match tomorrow when they host 5th place LMU (7-5) at Chiles at 1pm. In fact, with 6 matches to go in WCC play, all 6 are against the 3 teams above them and the 3 immediately below them in the current standings.

Pacific sits in 3rd place at 8-5, and they have to play USD tomorrow... so there is an opportunity here...!

Congrats to the Pilots... that is wins over #11 and #7 this season! UP is now in sole possession of 4th place, a half match behind LMU. Next up: at BYU on Saturday, noon.

The Pilots won again, beating St. Mary's 3-1 this evening. All four sets were hard-fought. Quite a few service errors by the Pilots, especially in the first set, but they battled to win. Cali Thompson (setter) and Brittney Markwith (middle blocker) were really in synch tonight. Markwith had a career night with 16 kills, mostly from quick sets in the middle.

Tonight's victory clinches a winning season for the second year in a row, and guarantees no worse than an even record in the WCC: they are 9-7 in the WCC with two matches to go. I don't know if they've ever done that well in the WCC--I suspect not.

Congrats to Coach Crouch and the entire team!

Hope I saw some of you at the VB match today, if not, you missed another good one!

Not only was it UP's first win ever over UOP,  the Pilots now have 17 wins on the season....the most in a season in 30 years, I'm told.

Yup, you saw me!

That was a very quick and decisive match today resulting in the Pilots 10th WCC win and a tie for 3rd place with LMU.

Not to take anything away from that 1986 team, but that was back when the Pilots played a NAIA schedule!

Last game of the season will be against Gonzaga @ 5 pm Monday at the Chiles Center. PilotNut will just have to leave work at little early for a change. Rolling Eyes

Wish I could, but have an evening class Monday.

It will be nice when Howard Hall comes down and the new classroom building goes up so there will be enough classroom space for all classes to be held during the day.....I'm sure the professors will be glad too!

Big night (or afternoon?!) in Chiles today.  Here is what is on the line:

Volleyball Closes Out Historic Season Monday at 5:00 PM Versus Gonzaga
After sweeping Saint Mary’s and Pacific last week, the Portland Pilot volleyball team will finish the regular season at home versus rival Gonzaga on Monday at 5 p.m. It will be senior day for five Pilot players that have been instrumental in one of the best turnarounds in college sports over the last three years and we want a big crowd out to support them. There is also a lot on the line in terms of WCC standings and postseason play. A win will most likely give Portland sole possession of third place in the WCC standings, behind nationally ranked San Diego and BYU.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office beginning one hour prior to the match.

Adult - $6.00
Junior (3-18) & Senior (62+) - $4.00

Here are a few notes about the remarkable program rise.
- Portland’s five seniors have been instrumental in the program resurgence as their freshman year the team was 0-27 overall.
- Portland is currently 17-12 overall and 10-7 in WCC play.
- The Pilots are tied for third in the WCC with LMU, trailing only national powers San Diego and BYU.
- A win Monday would likely give Portland sole possession of third place in the league standings.
- Portland has notable wins over No. 7 San Diego, No. 11 BYU, Oregon State, Mississippi State and Pepperdine (twice).
- This year the Pilots have guaranteed the best WCC finish in program history, the best win percentage since moving to Division I in 1986, two wins over ranked opponents for the first time ever, the first sweep of Pepperdine ever, the first win against Pacific in school history.

The team is currently tied for 3rd place with LMU at 10-7.  Portland plays at home vs. GU (9-Cool, while LMU hosts #10 BYU (15-2).  GU proved to be a very tough matchup in Spokane, so it will be difficult but the Pilots have the more advantageous matchup.

As DD and PilotNut stated, the Pilots are tied with LMU for 3rd, not with Gonzaga as the article states.

Also, the article reads "A win will secure the team third place in conference," but that is only true of LMU loses to BYU in LA.

Other than that....a good article on the change in the Pilots' attitude and winning ways:
