Re: NoPo Bar Thread
The t room plan is not what it once was. The payoff is the same as ever, but I believe there penalties are higher and the technology for detecting fake IDs is better making the risk higher. Pick something with a better risk reward ratio. Posting political opinions on Facebook seems to be popular right now. .ughh. Or just keep hanging out here with the scary mean old folks. For students in town during the breaks are they giving away any tickets to the mods center games? They do back in my day, but these games are technically hosted by OSU so not sure how they're working that.

Re: NoPo Bar Thread
Our online newspaper, the Beacon, has a short list of places to imbibe in Portland during happy hour.....the T-Room is just one of them, but really the only one within walking distance..
The entire list of UP area happy hours can be found here: http://www.upbeacon.com/article/2016/11/portlands-best-happy-hoursThe Beacon wrote: Twilight Room:
Happy Hour: Tuesday/Thursday $2
The “T-Room” is the staple University of Portland bar. With $2 draft beers and drinks during their Tuesday/Thursday 10-11 p.m. happy hour, you can find a huge number of UP students hanging out at the bar or playing pool. Grimy tables and chipped stools fill the bar, which boasts a huge back patio. The T-Room is not known for it’s classy atmosphere. Just the opposite actually. The bar is made to feel like a tavern that hasn't been properly cleaned in a few months. But, that is all just part of the purple building’s charm. Make your way to the T-Room to catch up with UP friends and get a little tipsy off of a mediocre but strong gin and tonic

Lots of closer options. Some even walkable so you can spend the Uber money on another beer.: http://barflymag.com/portland/area/north.html Perch is on the list.

Seriously!! Embarrassing. I am no connoisseur of happy hours, but that just shouts hipster high class in that article, minus the t-room. Embrace some NoPo UP kids! The Portway (a location my 19 year old self holds dear...wink wink). Tavern on Denver (tight spot, great shuffleboard). The Nite Hawk (pool and strong cocktails). The Perch! Tom's Pizza. Yorgo's. The Alabi. There's a bunch more! I mean, get to know your local joints!

Re: NoPo Bar Thread
The icon inspires me to rant... Mack's Market has all the beer you will ever need and if you buy a few cases the guy behind the counter has your back. He'll throw in some free bags of chips or something if you don't have the money to buy any after loading up on booze. If he's already locked the door and on his way home when you walk up he may even open the door back up for you. Oh, right they tore this down and left the lot empty behind the row houses or Tyson hall or whatever its called for ages before taking his sign and sticking it in the Pilot house. I guess you'll have to walk down to the gas station where nobody cares, the chips will be overpriced and...well its a soulless gas station store.

Ha! Was going to mention Mack's, but figured what's gone is gone.....I did love the complimentary chips! There is a lot in NoPo that is not yet gone. It builds better character than martinis in the pearl

Macks would be gone now in any case because they're actually using the land now, but it always bothered me the U tore it down and let the lot sit empty, then appropriated the name of the place. Could have leased it to the guy on a year by year basis or something.

Re: NoPo Bar Thread
The Perch, then called the Owl's Perch, was our favorite place to hang out as 18 year-old UP students in the 60's. There and the T-Room would buy you a beer or two on your 21st birthday, so it was also where we went with our authentic IDs on our 21st birthday.
I'm not sure if the proprietors knew we were under age or not, but they did honor the free drink offer on our birthday.
Mack's was not around yet when I was a student, but it's my understanding that UP made a very generous offer to the owner and he was quite glad to get out from under the store because of the rising cost of doing business and the OLCC paying regular visits.

+1 for the Sundown, formerly known as Jack and Jerry's. Almost as close to campus as the T-Room, and - unless you are really wanting to go to the T-Room for Thirsty Thursday or nostalgia's sake - a nicer bar for sure.
And don't forget Leisure or The Fixin' To in St. Johns. Slim's in SJ is also an old divey fave too.

Re: NoPo Bar Thread
You should write a letter to the editor....we rarely hear anything from UP alums when it comes to the "real world."Rochin54 wrote:Seriously!! Embarrassing. The trouble with writing a letter to the editor of the Beacon is you have to also submit a picture of yourself (although you could easily submit one that is of a glamorous woman or man, I suppose). They say it's voluntary, but I've yet to see a letter without a picture.
I guess PilotNation could submit a letter as long as everyone included our PN names and avatar.....The Beacon wrote: Voice Your Opinion
Have an opinion about something UP students care about orshould care about? We want to hear from you!
Send your commentary (500 words maximum) or Letter to the Editor (fewer than 250 words) to beacon@up.edu.
Please put “Opinion” in the email’s subject line, and follow the submission policy below.
We like to include an author headshot with each commentary printed, so please attach a head-and-shoulders photo of yourself, if possible. We may also arrange for a Beacon staffer to take your picture.
BEACON SUBMISSION POLICY:
Letters to the Editor must not exceed 250 words. Those with longer opinions are encouraged to submit guest columns, which should not exceed 500 words. The Beacon reserves the right to edit any contributions for length or style, and/or reject them for any reason without notification. The Beacon’s receipt of a submission does not guarantee publication.
All contributions must include the writer’s address, email address and phone number for verification purposes. University students must include their major and year in school.
The Beacon does not accept submissions from a group unless the writer(s) are listed individually,
The Beacon reserves the right to reject submissions for any reason.
Bottom line: Keep it classy. No profanity, inflammatory name-calling or cheap shots.

I was only at UP while "of age" so I didn't have to resort to any shenanigans, but I'll always be partial to Yorgo's. Me and the boys on the UP roller hockey club team would hold court there after our games in Hillsboro. Think I may have ended up at the Perch a time or two, too...
Don't these places ever close down or change their names? Seems like every other place I've been, the bars/taverns come and go. But North Portland just never seems to change.

I agree, a letter to the editor would be appropriate. Maybe after a Pilot Nation pub crawl to make sure we've all been to each and every N. Portland bar!
Rochin, you can dust off that great picture that used to hang in the Chiles Center!

I went there a few months ago, and I think it was my first time ever.
Had a very similar feeling to George's on Interstate, if you've ever been there. Not hipster-Portland by any means, but also not a total dive. It's best quality is probably that it is directly on the way to UP if you're coming up Greeley... no need to go all the way down to Lombard.

Re: NoPo Bar Thread
Next time the recruiting thread turns into a thread on dive bars in NoPo I'd like a heads up...a text or DM or something. Sheesh.
Agree with Stoney. George's and Slim's are great. The Your Inn Tavern is also money. Looking to head over to Linnton, don't forget to hit up the Decoy.
For the record, I always thought that T-Room was pretty nice compared to some of the other places we went.

Sorry Wood, I guess you're just going to have to read PN more regualarly
Has anyone been to the Over Easy since it changed from the Six Point Inn? I only went to the Six Point once and it wasn't nearly as scary as it looked from the outside.
