WCC Tourney 2018
In the other play-in game, #10 seed Pepperdine shot 71% for the game, while KJ Feagin was 4 of 22 for SCU, and PU rolled 85-69.
PU plays SMC Saturday evening, while LMU plays GU. In the afternoon games, USD is a 5 point underdog to BYU, while UOP is a 3 point underdog to USF.

BYU survives USD, 85-79. They had a 17 pt lead, and USD came back to tie it at 71 all, mostly by Carter. Nice effort by the Toreros and their coaches.

Hard fought battle between USF and Pacific, with Pacific tying it at the buzzer, but USF prevails in overtime 71-70.

Re: WCC Tourney 2018
LMU gave Gonzaga a scary frustrating first half with turnovers and low FG%, was only down 1 at half time, but ran out of steam and depth in the second and the Zags pulled away 83-69.

Re: WCC Tourney 2018
If you thought LMU/Gonzaga was crazy, Pepperdine/SMC was chaos. Waves came out blazing to a double digit run/lead, then trying to hold off the Gaels runs, then going back and forth between leads. Then Hermanson nailed 3 threes in a row and when the Waves tried to storm back they got screwed by the shot clock operator and couldn't hit the decisive 3s. 69-66 SMC.
Heartbreaking way to end the Marty Wilson era but what a hell of a game that was.

Here is the summary from the PU board:
When the ball was tied up with 26.5 seconds to play and 4 seconds on the shot clock, we had a good chance. We had momentum. We had swagger. We had the ball, down three points.
Then, it took them FOUR MINUTES AND 40 SECONDS to confirm that there were 26.5 seconds to play and 4 seconds on the shot clock and that it was our ball. Should the shot clock have reset? Probably not, but deciding that can't take four minutes. Whatever momentum and sense of continuity we had on our side was long gone.
It gets worse from there.
When we did finally inbound the ball, the shot clock didn't start.
That's right, folks. Marty Wilson spends ten years at Pepperdine, the players spend a full season preparing for this moment, hours upon hours of practice and film and dedication. Matthew Atewe and Amadi Udenyi have one chance after five years of injury and frustration to be part of something truly memorable.
And it happens. Colbey Ross, who has four seconds to get off a good shot despite starting 65 feet from the basket, plays it perfectly, gets himself a good look from the right wing, and swishes a tying three.
Meanwhile, some random dude at a press table has the monumental task of pushing a single button for two hours. And in the most "YOU HAD ONE JOB" moment of 2018 ... he forgets to. As ESPN announcer Caron Butler succinctly said, "wake up."
It gets worse from there.
The officials then spend two MORE minutes in front of a video screen and huddling, only to, in what I have to assume is the proper interpretation of a mind-numbingly awful rule, declare that the shot doesn't count, but the two seconds that happened before the officials realized it and stopped play DO count, which means the Waves now have only two seconds to get off yet another game-tying attempt.
Colbey Ross AGAIN manages to get a good look, but this one misses.

After watching SMC go 29/35 from the foul line against UP, I heard some say there was no way the WCC was going to allow SMC to lose three in a row and miss out on the revenue of the NCAA Tournament.
My initial thought was, "no way," but now, after watching the SMC/PU end-of-game debacle in Las Vegas, I'm a believer!

Hey, go easy, they need more money to mollify GU.

Zags clobber Dons.
BYU and SMC were neck and neck but BYU pulled away and faces the Zags tomorrow.

Childs was awesome for BYU, and they played very well. Great interior passing.

Re: WCC Tourney 2018
There were actually some pretty exciting games in this year's tournament, for both the men and women, but tonight's final was not one of those games!
The GU win in the women's final over USD earler today was actually exciting, competitive, and well played....and much more fun to watch.

Random things I saw in Vegas:
- Pilot Club staff did a nice job with their events. The pre-game function for the men had about 90 folks there. And the Saturday event at Top Golf looked like a fun new addition.
- No UP priests at the Sunday WCC Mass. I assume Fr. Dan went home Saturday with the team. But the USF men's team, coaches and spirit squad were all there. First time I've seen a team at the Mass. The Mass is always very well attended, considering it is in a casino.
- Best pep band was probably the GU band; they are large, energetic, do chants, and sing. One team, LMU, I think, didn't send a band.
- Worst traditional cheer squad was also GU. They don't lead any cheers. They simply do back flips, lifts, and wave at the crowd.
- UP is one of the best dance teams. The USF spirit squad is also a dance team, and they are coed, all with the sparkling outfits.
- I was surprised that the BYU fan attendance was not greater. They are about the same driving time to Las Vegas as the So. Cal. schools, but they were not there in force, especially compared to GU fans.
- BYU was the only school that had a student section present. In past years, GU had a full student section, but not this year. Something to do with spring break timing?

...gonna have to disagree with that. But then again, I'm very biased! I'll keep the Pilots band director's rankings to myself, however...
LMU did not send a band--they used UP's band on Thursday, but the students decided they did not want to play for LMU's men on Saturday. I think Pepperdine brought no band--at least, I never saw one.

As you should be. I was probably too focused on the game Friday to actually assess how the UP band performed. You may be correct about PU. I remember seeing the Wave mascot, but I didn't stay for much of their games. After the loss to LMU, I didn't feel like watching PU-SCU. And I figured they had no shot against SMC; my bad.
I'm sure the band director's ranking is much more valid than mine. I did think I should create an evaluation score sheet next year to make notes; but then that seems like work.
Thanks for being there.
