Fill the gym for Santa Clara
I hope the administration is figuring out how to do this. Hell, go to Portland Public Schools and give them a couple thousand tickets. This team has looked a lot better when the gym is full and they're going to be 0-15 in WCC with one last shot. I think they'll win anyway, but would be nice to do it in front of a full house.

Re: Fill the gym for Santa Clara
Giving away free tickets to all games through partnerships with schools, churches, neighborhood associations, employers, etc. would be a great thing for UP to do. Some of those fans would buy popcorn and revenues would go up. But I don’t think the athletic department is dedicating much staff time to that kind of grassroots marketing.

How do they justify selling tickets and season tickets if they just end up giving them away for free later? I very much get your point, but they have to be careful....

Yeah, it's a tough call- I was thinking more in terms of just this game for starters. Hate to see these guys drop an 0-16 season.

Re: Fill the gym for Santa Clara
I have had multiple season tix for years. I would be totally supportive of anything to get more people in the seats for the last game. An empty Chiles Center really makes watching a game unenjoyable. However I am not in favor of 2500 kids running around unsupervised.

Re: Fill the gym for Santa Clara
A thinking-outside-the-box question. If you worked in the UP Athletic Department and Scott Leykam assigned you with the following project, what ideas would you consider?
UP wants to explore offering 100% free admission for all basketball games. The primary goal is to boost attendance in order to create a better home court advantage and establish an energetic atmosphere at Chiles that will make attending games more fun and help attract recruits. However, we will only do this if we believe we have a solid plan to also 1) Maintain overall revenue, and 2) Create an attractive product/experience/package of some kind that we can sell to replace the traditional season ticket.
What ideas would you suggest?

Charge for the booze in the Pilot Club?
Have the biology department develop a GMO popcorn that is addictive?
Coin operated bathrooms?

That's right, the only unsupervised kids that should be running around are my nieces and nephews when I take them to games. I probably let the little ones run a little too free, but I don't want Uncle Blacksheep to get a reputation of being a responsible babysitter.

One thing I think is a little rich is the cost of the concessions. $4 for a bottle of pop is tough for a parent or a black sheep uncle.
My concern about the unsupervised kids(or kids in general) are the ones running around and crashing into you as you try to walk around. Especially the west end upper bleachers.

Perhaps free admission, but make up for it by charging a fee for Pilot Nation members to sit in a special section where all kids are velcro-ed to their seats?JimmAlacki wrote:My concern about the unsupervised kids(or kids in general) are the ones running around and crashing into you as you try to walk around. The younger kids would benefit from that. The older kids who are high school age, I am sure the NCAA would frown on free admission as a recruiting violation

Re: Fill the gym for Santa Clara
There would by definition be no recruiting violation if it were offered to the general student population equally.
its only when it becomes a preferred benefit that a violation occurs.
if UP offered a free trip to Hawaii for every HS kid in the NW, no violation occurs if recruits are in that pool.

Sorry I don't trust NCAA especially if it was given to primarily BB players

Re: Fill the gym for Santa Clara
Saturday is Senior Night for both the women's and men's teams....and all tickets are discounted to 50% off the regular price.
All a person has to do is purchase a ticket for one of the games, and they gain access to both games.
In addition to the games, at halftime of the men's game there will be a paper airplane toss contest with the winner taking home a $500 travel voucher and 2 all-game passes to the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas, March 7-12.
And for just $7 more when ordering tickets, you can also get a hot dog, popcorn, and a soda....
Sounds almost FREE...and past experience has shown that if a person pays a discounted price for a product they are more likely to take advantage of the offer, and for those who are first-time buyers/fans of a Pilots game, they are likely to return next season if they like what they see on Saturday.

Your season tickets must be better than mine. Our row only gets shirts when the baseball team throws them.

Likewise usually the shirts are not thrown to the crowd but actually simply handed across the first 2-3 rows. They must fear for their safety as they don't dare walk into the crowd to throw a shirt more than a few rows.

If you want somebody to throw you a shirt, you have to act a little like an idiot to get attention.
Not much of an issue for me.
And my ploy is to point to a prominent UP personage who sits in back of me.
They always throw short.

They will DOMINATE Santa Clara. Dominate!
Saint Mary's going to be rough, they're on the NCAA bubble and something to prove.
